Desert View Trail is a 0.5 mile (0.8k) round-trip, accessible trail located on Hwy-158, Deer Creek Road, in the Mount Charleston area, a bit more than an hour north of The Strip. The trail leads to two different overlooks with views of the desert to the north and east and a number of interpretive signs. In the early days of the Cold War, people came to these overlooks to witness atmospheric atomic bomb tests at the Nevada Test Site. Today, one can sometimes witness US Air Force training over the Nellis Bombing Range and, looking north, just beyond the mountains in the distance is the not so secret Area 51.

25 miles past the South Rims Visitor Center. Decent drive if you dont get stuck behind slow moving vehicles! Plenty of side of the road stops for additional viewing! Nice views and people!

try to do this late afternoon if you can. We turned into the Desert View Trail on the eastern side after seeing Route 66. There are so many places to see outside of the Grand canyon itself. The first stop is Desert View where the Watch Tower is. An impressive structure. next is Navajo point and Lipan point, both with similar views about 5km apart, each with their unique view. We were lucky enough to see an Elk at Lipan point
