Do not take this after August. We were bused there leaving Las Vegas at 4:00. When we got to the dock we had an hour of light but they did not start the cruise until after 7:00, so we saw nothing. Really, the object of...More
I saw this en route tot the grand canyon , it just takes your breath away that someone thought this amazing feat of engineering could be done . If anything it's probably more beautiful at night when it's all lit up
This bypass takes you, pretty much wind free, over the new bridge and really you don't see a thing. Take any of the exits before and you can drive down below and see everything including crossing the dam, coming back up and rejoining the main...More
I travelled on a Grayline coach on an excursion to the Grand Canyon. Our driver allowed 30 minutes, a little longer than other coaches it seemed. It was the right amount of time to walk up to the viewpoint and take photos, and a good...More

It is well marked, and you can't miss it - parking lot, stairs/ramp up to the O'Callaghan/Tillman bridge crossing. You can walk all the way across the bridge - 1 mile downstream and 1000 feet above the river - spectacular.

Cross the O'Callaghan/Tillman bridge (I-11) into AZ. Drive South 14 miles on Highway 93. Turn right onto Willow Beach Road. Follow the signs and drive 4 miles down to the marina. Black Canyon is below Hoover Dam. Spectacular canyon; river runs high. Great boating and fishing. Boat rentals available.
I have just watched a Discovery program about the preparation for building this bridge. It never gave a dateline on the show (it's on Africa TV), so has this bridge been completed and is it in use? I tried to google it but I couldn't find pictures. Cheers

Hoover Dam Bypass from Grand Canyon (3 Replies)
When coming from Grand Canyon into Vegas, is there a parking lot on the Hoover Dam bypass bridge? I'd love to stop and take a few pics of the Hoover dam, but not sure where to park to take photos?

From AZ , cross the new bridge and exit at NV State Hwy 172.Its well marked. Head down toward the dam. Just past the security ckeckpoint on your right,is the free parking for the new walkway over the bypass bridge. You can't see anything driving over the bridge. They intentionally built the walls high. If you follow the road down to the dam, parking in the structure is $7.If you cross the dam into AZ its free. You need to retrace your steps to get back to the highway. On the drive back up,...More
Vegas to the South Rim, one-day trip (3 Replies)
I went the south rim last spring and the traffic was terrible around hoover dam. I hear that the Hoover Dam bypass is now open! Has the traffic improved significantly around that area? Also, we plan on leaving Vegas early this Saturday morning and coming back the same night. Which sites along the South Rim are a must-see? Any recommendations of rafting/horseback riding that we can do during the day? How bad is the crowd/traffic at the South Rim around this time of the year?

The traffic was relieved by the 4-lane new bridge above the Colorado River which bypasses Hoover Dam. This Saturday will be one of the busiest days of the year at GCNP South Rim, so expect it to be crowded. It will be a safer area to be returning to Las Vegas and possibly partly after dark than from the North Rim as the route is all interstate and major highways. There is not horseback riding or rafting at GCNP South Rim. The river is one steep mile below the canyon rim in altitude, and the...More
