if you have a car - take a side trip from the Strip
Ever since I first saw a photo of the Seven Magic Mts I’ve wanted to see them. We never have a rental car in Vegas but since we rented one to get out of town for the weekend this year I wanted this to happen! The display is sponsored now by the LV Museum of Art and it has an extension thru 2021….yay! Sunday morning we headed out of town - once again it would be nice to be there for the sunrise but I was not pushing my driver. 🙂. Thankfully we are both early risers. I got so excited seeing the 7 tiny statues pop into sight from a distance at 6:37am — we arrived in plenty of time to see the sun first peeping up over the ridge and shine of the HUGE 7 statues. The bright neon colors just popped in the sunrise — I got some beautiful photos and the good thing about being there early is we were just the 2nd vehicle there. A family was having their photos taken so I did not get in their way but they finished soon after we walked up. It was so fun to see these huge boulders. I had watched videos and read about the work before we went so I understood the magnitude of having them stacked by cranes and the effort it took the artist, Ugo Rondinone, to obtain permission to set these up in the desert. It is just such a stark difference between the modern neon boulders and the desert surroundings. My husband was not impressed and did not like to see nature messed with. So — different strokes for different folks. He humored me in making this happen and I am so appreciative! Look them up online - it’s so cool. 🙂

Definitely something you don’t see every day
Located in the desert off Interstate 15 about 10 miles south of Las Vegas near the community of Jean, Seven Magic Mountains is an eye-catching art installation featuring 7 painted boulder totems up to 35 ft./10.6 m. high by Ugo Rondinone. If you’re approaching from the south (i.e., California), take exit 12 for NV-161 toward Jean/Goodsprings and then follow Las Vegas Boulevard for a few miles (there will be signs directing you toward the installation); you’ll see the exhibit rising in the distance from a mile away. There is a large, free parking area right off the street (NOTE that there are no restrooms or any other services available here). Meant to be “a creative expression of human presence in the desert,” this exhibition opened in 2016 and is currently scheduled to run through 2021. It is a short walk from the parking lot to the installation, which is indeed impressive in its size, scope and use of color. Needless to say, you will find many photo opportunities as you walk through the exhibit. Visitors to Las Vegas are always looking for budget-friendly things to do, and this is certainly a worthwhile option.

A little piece of kitschy americana…
Just like the worlds biggest ball of twine the Seven Magic Mountains are a kitschy piece of americana. They stand roughly 15 to 20 minutes prior to entering the main part of the Las Vegas strip. In fact their address is on Las Vegas Boulevard but they are in a desolate part of town south of Las Vegas proper down the 15 freeway. Somebody spent a serious amount of time to get these in place and all painted. From what I understand they’ve already been touched up once since their inception in May of 2016. Pretty nondescript but there are two signs by the trail that takes you out to them that you can learn a little bit about them. They are just one of those cool, offbeat roadside attractions that pop up in different towns during the travels of your life. The best part about these they’re free to the public.

Fun in the middle of nowhere
Nice place to visit and have some fun and inspiration. Fun because walking around the art in the middle of the desert offers great views and is enjoyable. Inspiring in that what could have been a five year old's Play Doh creation is being visited by so many.

    Worth the drive
I have been wanting to do this for a while, but I never had transportation there. This time we rented a car so I wanted to make sure to take a trip there. It’s pretty cool and it’s free to do so if you have a car it’s worth the trip. The colors that are painted on the rocks are very vivid and the structures were stacked higher that I expected.

This was a quick and easy drive from airport and then back to The strip. We had rented a car for a day from the airport rental center to do this because I read it might be difficult to get Uber back to strip from this attraction. You can take an Uber to this attraction but you might have problems getting an Uber back to hotel. We went on Christmas Day thinking people would be at home spending time with their families. But no, everyone was out here taking pics like us! It was very crowded and hard to take pics without extra people in your photos. So we did spend maybe an hour trying to get the right photo and poses. Still a lot of fun if you’re into photos and selfies. I didn’t like how people were climbing the rock artwork to get their photos- very disrespectful. Anyways, we did manage to get some nice photos and my kids enjoyed it.

    All Hype With No Appeal
I am not sure what the hype is all about. They are bright colorful stacked rocks. It is something worth stopping for if you are on your way to Vegas, but not as cool as Hoover Dam or some of the other attractions along the way. Its trendy and therefore popular, however what you hear about is not what you get. Its overly hyped up and sadly this hype leaves you disappointed and wanting more. One thing to note is the unpaved parking lot entry, when entering veer to the left, there is a substantial dip which will tear up your vehicle if its anything less than an SUV. Whether the city or state should do something about this as I am sure I am not the only one who's vehicle has been damaged. Its a short walk from parking to the display but pavement is uneven so take appropriate footwear and sunscreen. The rocks themselves provide little shade and everyone is scrambling to get out of the heat to take photos so unless you're there super early trying to get a solo shot without someone else in it is a bit difficult. It is nice that this is a free public art piece, sadly Trip Advisor does not offer less than an hour for recommended length of visit, you can truly do this in less time it will take you to walk from your car in the parking area car and back, that is unless you absolutely LOVE rocks.

Time for a waste of time
Pretty stupid but worth the price of admission. It's free to see. The person who made this thing had a free afternoon and a bunch of paint left from a project and decided to go into the desert and paint a bunch of rocks, then stack them.

    Chiclets chewing gum
If you love oddball roadside art then you must take a few minutes of your time and take a look. Don't forget this is selfie heaven with lots of people here to take their photo op. I call this artwork Chiclets because it reminds me of the small chewing gum that came in small packets and looked just like this.

A kind of psychedelic Stonehenge in the Mojave Desert.
On the way from Las Vegas to Los Angeles a must do stop at this strikingly colorful artwork “Seven Magic Mountains” in the middle of the desert. The rocks, painted in fluorescent colors, resemble a kind of psychedelic Stonehenge in the Mojave Desert. A nice short photo stop and definitely worth a visit at approximately 11 miles from Las Vegas.

My husband and I visited the Seven Magic Mountains installation en route to Jean Roach Dry Lake Bed for a festival. This colorful installation is pretty and striking to see against the mountains of the desert behind it. When we went, it was filled with people taking photos. There was parking right on site. It was cool to see but probably not worth going out of your way for.

5 words - do it for the gram! This FREE outdoor art installation in Vegas is a must-visit for locals or travelers who need some fresh content for their insta, pinterest, YouTube or blog. You can easily practice social distancing too and yes, it is still open even during the pandemic. This family of four loved the concept but not so much the execution. The idea is neat: take some colorful modern art and juxtapose it against the starkness of the Nevada desert. But in actual practice, it was swarmed by a hoard of sight-seers and strewn with the trash and refuse you get with such large crowds. Parking was abundant but chaotic and the only bathroom was guarded greedily by the hot dog vendor by the gate. Definitely a skip unless you happen to be driving by.
