I've worked at NAS Fallon since 2007. If you love the sound of freedom then this is a great place to be. Just make sure you know some one and they know you so you can come on and get some cool pictures. If not make sure you contact the Public Affairs Officer for a tour.

You cannot see the static displays of aircraft and there is no museum here. You have to have military base access. I’ll save you the trip unless you want to see some military police up close have them take your license and call your vehicle in and let your turn around. LOL

Although when the movie, "Topgun", was filmed the squadrons were based at NAS Miramar, in California, many of the scenes were actually filmed here at NAS Fallon, including the infamous low-level control tower fly-by. Life imitating art, eventually Topgun was moved to Fallon. If you can access the base, be sure to do so; there is a great, open-air collection of Korean War to Desert Storm aircraft near the Topgun hangars. Civic and other groups can arrange tours of NAS Fallon by contacting the Public Information Officer at the phone # listed. I hosted a college alumni group there recently, and they were all fascinated.

Earlier reviews mentioned how interesting the fighter plane collection was. We drove to the entrance where they took my driver's license and were told there is no museum. After being sure we weren't a threat, we were told to turn around and leave.

If you have base access and extra time make a stop out here. Have always been curious about this base and finally made an effort to visit. Takes a little more than 1 hour to get here from Reno. Lots of decommissioned planes on display on the base down the road from the exchange and commissary. Walk around the planes like a self guided tour and learn some history of each aircraft out there. If you plan on going out there and want to go to the commissary, remember it’s closed on Sunday and Monday so you don’t waste a trip out there. Exchange is decent sized just like the commissary, smaller than most but has the basics you need.

... as we could not see any public entrance. I was happy with this as it looks as though the base has controlled or liimited access? We could see the outdoor display of fighter jets and get a sense of how large this base is. There is even an RV park, no doubt for family visitors. The setting is quite magnificent. YMMV

The museum of fighter planes is second to none, explanations and descriptions and stats on plaques for you to read. Old ones, new ones, even some of the enemy ones, a very very worthwhile experience for all the family.

We took a tour here from Reno with the Vietnam Helicopter Pilot's Association (VHPA) reunion. We were taken up into the tower just below the controllers where our host explained the in and outs of the Top Gun school, the airplanes used and we got to see several of the planes takeoff on their way out to the training areas. Also toured the outdoor museum with many of the different eras fighter planes. Ate lunch in the base dining facility and then visited the officer's club where there are many mementos from previous Top Gun classes and other memorabilia including an ejection seat. Had a great time.

This desert training base became the home to the Navy's Top Gun school after NAS Mirimar became a Marine Corps facility. The terrain and remoteness are similar to Las Vegas' Nellis Air Force Base and their Red Flag flight training program. Even if you can't access the base, you can find a spot to have a picnic and enjoy the precision flying of the best pilots in the U.S. Navy. We didn't have the time for a tour and not sure if they have them, but it would certainly be worth checking out. NAS Fallon was also the location of Nevada Boy's State, an experience I enjoyed as a high school senior-to-be summer of 1976.

Wife and I use the base all the time for medical and commissary and the Nex store. Also for filling up with gas when needed. All places are very well maintained and operated at a excellent standard. Would recommend!!
