This is a great place to see some of Nebraska's nature. There's a nice gravel path for walking on the east side of US-83. On the west side, there's a driving tour of the refuge. If you want to see animals, take your time on...More

Stop at the Marsh Lake Overlook and Nature Trail to pick-up a guide to the Little Hay Road Wildlife Drive and other helpful info first! We took the Little Hay Road Wildlife Drive (25mi/hr and less at times) gravel road in our minivan without difficulty....More

Our trip through the refuge merely consisted of what we saw driving through it on US Hwy 83 and utilizing the parking area by North Marsh Lake. At this location is a kiosk describing the flora and fauna that one could spot in the refuge....More

The Refuge was incredibly desolate. We saw some cool bird and a deer and lots of sandhills. The box lakes were beautiful and picturesque.

Took a ride down 83 out of Valentine to the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge after dinner. Was impressed by size of lakes but the roads are all sandy gravel. We were hoping to see some wildlife but only spotted a wind turkey.

We picked up a self-guided tour at the overlook area. Don't be confused at the gate. While the gates are chain-locked, there is a drive through area next to the gate with a cattle gate in the ground so the animals don't leave the refuge....More

We visited the refuge twice this year and there were different animals to view both times. The refuge boasts elk and bison herds as well as frolicking prairie dogs and numerous species of birds. It's an oasis in the sand hills!
