The ruins are not at the spot where the tripadvisor app says it is. On that spot is a new church. Our Spanish isn't good enough to find out where the ruins actually are.

Not just the church (which is in much better condition than we expected). It sits in a large enclosed area with manicured gardens, spaces for a picnic and clean washrooms. Parking is guarded.

This is one of the only Spanish colonial sites in Costa Rica. Lovely church surrounded by birds and beautiful plants.

Entrance is free! Garden is manicured and flowers are beautiful! Ambience is very inviting and romantic. I was actually thinking about making it a great wedding venue :)
Visit if you have time and want great scenery for photos

Nice if you want to learn and see about their history, this is not really something I am interested in so I did more just to cite see.

It’s a nice tropical garden with beautiful flowers and trees and then we come to the ruins of that church. It is not huge, but it looks very nice between the plants – by the way here we also saw some young still red banana fruit and flowers. And we heard there a lot of birds – it took us awhile to discover the green parrots sitting on the ruins.

I went there with my boyfriend in January 2019. We had a wonderful time, very nice and clean area. Many families there picnicking having a great ole time. The structure is very beautiful. I have the impression that we didn’t walk far enough and there was more to see after the small bridge so maybe explore further. There were littles stands outside the park selling corn on the cob and other goodies that were not expensive at all. Bathroom were not clean, no toilet paper and no toilet seat so make sure to stop somewhere before hand. On the way there from downtown Cartago we stumble upon this wonderful park with a breathtaking view ‘’Mirador de Ujarras’’ they have bbq’s, tables, beautiful area to picnic and games for the kids to climbs on.

This is a little park where families gather and kids can run around and play. We also got to see a bit of history as well. It’s wonderful to see how this ruin has become repurposed into a lovely family-friendly spot in the valley - and the views don’t hurt either!

It’s free to enter and there are restrooms.

The Orosi Valley was the first place where Spaniards settled in a real city. In this extremely beautiful valley you may visit these ruins as well as the very well preserved first church in Costa Rica. It is a day trip that if you do it all together is very much worth it. I am not sure if just going to visit Ujarrás by itself is worth a trip. Plan to visit a few of the local attractions to make your day great.

Costa Rica doesn’t have a rich architectural history. We saw some in San Jose but in the area of Cartago, there’s not much except for the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, Cartago.
So this ruin is a nice change of scenery and the garden is beautifully kept.
