We are not experts in the field of art, but we certainly enjoyed our short stop at he Sheldon Museum while on our cross-country trip to Yellowstone. Parking was a bit of a challenge with the one way streets and street-parking, but we managed to find our way. The museum was much larger than we could manage to see in the short time we had, and we especially enjoyed the large, unusual pieces in the garden outside the museum. If you do nothing else, at least walk around outside and see the sculptures.

The Sheldon Museum of Art is a Philip Johnson masterpiece opened in 1963. Before even entering the building take a close look at the beautiful marble used for the building. It continues inside, even on the ceiling, where the marble surrounds gold medallions. While some have commented the museum is small, I feel it is just the right size so you can take time to study the art without being rushed or overwhelmed. If you want a large art museum, go to Chicago! Outdoors is a rambling sculpture garden, unfortunately, they were re-arranging the art in the garden when I was there, so they didn’t have any accurate maps. Photography is allowed and the museum is free. Parking at the museum is limited and difficult to find, you can park at the garage between Q, P, 11th and 12th with an entrance on 11th. I believe the first hour is free and it is only a two block walk. Definitely worth a stop for art and architecture lovers. Also good for kids with short attention spans

Image a museum that has a superb Hopper and decides NOT to show it! They had not one single famous artist on show when we were there, except for one Warhol. Very small by the way

Typical of many modern designed buildings, it is more about the building than the actual art exhibition space. There was a small gallery with highlights from the collection. The leader of this small but excellent pack was a wonderful Hopper! The moderate sized main gallery had an interesting show on the political and social unrest of 1968. The Sheldon is worth a visit though parking was Pretty difficult!

I love the Sheldon! They are works of art by super famous artist as well as student work, local work and historical pieces!
The JEWEL of this is the Sculpture Garden, which is always free. The garden tours through the University of Nebraska at Lincoln's main student campus (so my favorite times to visit is when classes are out for breaks). THERE are SO MANY pieces by famous artists nestled in amongst the arboretum and gardens on campus.
A MUST SEE!

My wife and I had some time to kill on a Saturday morning. It is true that there's not any "famous" artists like I read in other reviews. Regardless, there was some nice art to view, the building is beautiful, the travertine interior is beautiful. We were only there an hour, but it was a nice stop.

A surprisingly good collection, including several A-list artists from the 20th century. Don't miss the outdoor sculpture collection, spread around the campus in a short radius around the museum.

Clean, interesting, friendly (but maybe not completely family friendly. Several nude photos.) I love that they offer folding chairs to take along to contemplate art as you go.

I have to review Sheldon again (I had a glowing review March 2018). The current exhibit on Portraits and Portraiture is not to be missed. Showing u til July 2020 For a FREE entrance, you will see gems showcased in the National Gallery of Art. Diane Arbus, Kehinde Wiley (who did President Obama’s portrait), Cindy Sherman, the list goes on and on.
Plus, ask for a map of the out door sculptures and take your own tour of the 30+ sculptures.

What kind of parking is available for this museum?
Written March 23, 2021
How big is it? How long should I plan to be there?
Written April 3, 2017
It isn't a huge place but because the exhibits change, the time can vary depending on how interested you are in the specific exhibits. I'd say generally 1-2 hours. The campus (where it's located) is beautiful to stroll if you are a walker.
