This Observatory is in Holmes Park across from the lake and is free & open to the public on Saturday nights.

We were disappointed that they had not updated the hours on their website. Their website said 7pm until 11pm. When we got there, the building was closed with a sign saying it would open at sunset. That didn't happen until 8:30pm so to use up time we walked along the lake - that was beautiful and even though the grasses were high, there were no bugs.

The observatory opened at 8:30pm and it took them about 15 min to open the roof and set up the telescopes but it wasn't dark enough to see anything through the telescope except Venus which looked like a white dot, just like you can see with the naked eye.

So they decided to put on a film about the sun for 30 min to watch. The room the movie in was musty as it was closed all week causing several people sneezing fits. The movie about the sun was amazing! It had excellent footage of the sun taken from the Soho satelite! But after 30 min they shut it off even though it wasn't done yet - saying "Oops, sorry I thought it was only 30 min but I guess it's longer. You can go back to the telescopes now and loot at Saturn."

So we saw Saturn next - that was amazing! It was bright white (not red) and you could see the rings!! He said the next thing to look at would be a galaxy but we would have to wait another 30 min so it could get darker (we had already been waiting 2 hrs and 15 min!). So they decided to put on a film about a comets even though we wanted to see the rest of the sun movie.

It was really, really neat to see Saturn through a telescope and the film about the sun was amazing! But do plan to spend all evening there!

This is a nice park on the east side of Lincoln. I often run the 2.25 mile trail around the lake. You never know what kind of wildlife you will see. It is very peaceful running on this trail. If you have a fishing license you can also fish here. And of course there are playgrounds for the kiddos. It is not a big lake, but it serves its purpose.

Holmes Lake in East Lincoln is the perfect get-a-way within the city limits. It has something for everyone. My only complaint is the limestone walking trail that goes all the way around the lake is poorly maintained. One would think the city would take better care of it, with all the use it gets daily. One other problem with the park is the bathrooms are rarely open, and dark, dingy, and dirty when they are.

I love this park for its lakes, trails, picnic areas, baseball park and all that it offers for anyone and everyone. Whether walking, running, biking or driving through, it is a great place.

Nice park, large grassy areas and paved, shady walkway around lake. Lots of people fishing. Dogs on leash welcome. Free parking and entry.

Holmes Park has been one of Lincolns best parks for over 50 years! They have ball diamonds, picnic shelters, stocked trout fishing, crappie, bass and blue gill. They have a golf course, Hyde Astronomy Observatory and walking trails. In the Winter they have sledding from the dike onto the frozen lake and ice-skating. It is beautifully landscaped and well-maintained.

It’s a happening kind of park and there are usually lots of people there. They have several parking lots and there is usually plenty of parking. Local radio stations occasionally host events there as well.

There is room to fly kites by the dike and there are no tennis courts or pickle courts at this time.

No motor boats allowed, but you can use canoes sail boats and windsurfers. One of Lincoln’s many bike trails trails also connects with the park. This park attracts families, teens, singles, couples, middle-aged and older people.

Holmes Lake is encircled by a trail that is a very pleasant walk of about 2 miles. Often too busy for bikes but is a nice ride. Often birds on the lake.

My wife and I visit Holmes Lake all the time when the weather is nice. There is a route that makes a nice circle around most of the lake that is perfect for a walk or jog. There are always ducks and geese around and sometimes you can even see a muskrat. You can also go fishing (for smaller fish).

This really is a pretty area with bridges, trees, and the trail.
