I can't speak highly enough about the Tawaki penguin photography workshop that I have just done with NZPW. The location on the west coast of the South island was at the wilderness Lodge at Lake Moeraki and is a beautiful setting. The hosts, Anne and Gerry, are a wonderful couple who really know how to make the stay at their lodge a very memorable experience. Our photography guide, Richard, is an incredible professional photographer in his own right, but much more than that, he is a very patient and focussed instructor. The beauty of this type of workshop was the small size of the group and Richard was able to provide significant one on one discussion and advice, which was invaluable to me. On top of that, he is a very engaging and warm person. I will definitely be looking at doing further workshops with NZPW next year.

Can't say enough about Ken's (and Matthias') patience throughout the tour. He managed to keep everything positive and found us other opportunities to photograph when the weather didn't always cooperate. I was also 2 weeks into a 3 week trip that included Australia when I started on the NZ Photography Workshops tour. That meant I was getting a little worn out with traveling. Ken did a great job of checking on me and making sure I was getting what I needed out of the workshop. I know my way around a camera and know how to shoot most styles of photography, but this workshop introduced me to a filter kit and a few filters I had never used before. I also learned a lot more about capturing water motion from someone who has studied and perfected this over many years. The other nice thing was the amount of locations I was able to see on the South Island in a short amount of time. I'll probably look at booking another workshop that takes me to other places in New Zealand, but the Beaches and Bays tour offered quite a bit and on a very personalized level.

I was lucky enough to be one of the participants on the first New Zealand Photography Workshop’s Deer Retreat Workshop in February 2021. This was a great opportunity to refresh and increase my wildlife photography skills during these COVID times. The workshop included a combination of photographing deer from hides and from the roads on the farm as well as a little landscape photography. The hospitality and accommodation on site was also great. Even before I left I knew I wanted to repeat the workshop - I have now booked to return on the second workshop in late May 2021!

I arranged for a 3 day private tour with New Zealand Photography Workshops several months before my recent trip. Two hours before I was scheduled to meet my guide, Ken, and after traveling 1.5 days from Denver, Colorado, USA to Dunedin, I received a note at the hotel that my guide was cancelled due to the guide being unable to make it. I would have been stranded in Dunedin without a car for 3 days had my family not still been nearby after dropping me off for my tour. Although unfortunate circumstances can happen, this was negligence on the part of New Zealand Workshops in a number of ways. First, if you have a client flying from so far away for the tour, a backup plan is a must if the guide cannot make it. Second, the guide should have been on location in advance to avoid any unforeseen errors. When I contacted the rep, Steph, her customer service was horrific. She obviously could have cared less that I was in the predicament they caused. When I asked if I would be compensated for my travel expenses for a tour that would not be happening, she made it clear they felt no responsibility. She stated I could take over the expense of the hotel on my own but they were cancelling my rooms. I was quite literally being left stranded at the last minute. I am out thousands of dollars in my other travel expenses for an experience that never happened with a tour company who made it clear they had no concern for the predicament they caused.

Phenomenal experience with this company. The structure and layout of the tour was excellent and our guide, Ken, went above and beyond at every possible opportunity to ensure that everyone on the tour had the best possible experience and all needs were met. We got to see some amazing locations and we were very lucky with the weather overall.

Recently completed the Milford Sound and Catlins photo tour. Location, guides, and accommodation all first class. Fantastic experience and learned a lot. The amount you cover and the variety of locations made this a great trip, and I'm planning the next one. The helicopter trip was a highlight, but all the locations had their own special character, making it a fantastic 5 days.

Highly recommended workshop for anyone wanting to improve landscape photography skills. Best suited for those with some good existing skills. Excellent facilitation and engagement from the workshop leaders, and a great way to learn and be challenged.

Travelling from India to New Zealand solely with the objective of photographing its landscape and wildlife usually calls for lengthy planning and research. I must admit we were short on both; what we found instead was Richard Young of New Zealand Photography Workshops. The initial pre-tour correspondences were quite encouraging and most of our concerns were promptly addressed to. This was to be a 15 day South Island Photography Workshop exclusively for the three of us, 11 of which were to be conducted by Richard and rest by Rob Brown.
We liked Richard from the very moment we met each other at Christchurch, the day before we were to embark on the 15 day adventure. He promptly led all our apprehensions to rest with his infectious enthusiasm and eye for detail. Over the next couple of days as we drove around some of the most scenic places in South Island we were not only blessed with an abundance of good weather but also the constant guidance of Richard. I must admit that although we consider ourselves seasoned travel photographers, landscape and wildlife has never been our forte and we were making mistakes by the dozens and Richard was kind enough to nudge us in the right directions without ever being pushy or the ‘know it all’ type.
Richard was always willing to go the extra mile for that perfect shot, and our usual routine would consist of getting up early and venturing out in the dark and Richard would have some cute little place with a great view already tagged on his google map. The same routine would follow in the evening for the sunset and lots thrown in-between. Lunch was never a priority for us as long as our appetite for photographs were met and we would survive on coffees and bits through the day. We would get down to have dinner to discuss the day and the plans for the next at some of the nicest local eateries that Richard seemed to know like the back of his hand. We also got a taste of how well Richard knew the wildlife by anticipating a meeting of the Sea Lions well in advance and guiding us to take the right position. We also got to stay at a great variety of places, each carefully selected.
By the end of the 11 days when he handed us over to another legend in his own right, Rob Brown, we felt like we were bidding adieu not to our photographer guide but someone who became a close friend over this short period. Rob is older and is quite a contrast to Richard but is a gentleman to the core. I loved chatting with Rob over some bumpy rides into the highlands and he knows some truly great places. Time is never a constraint for him and one evening he drove us further and further on the West Coast Road, with an eye on the setting sun to the Blue Pools Walk. Richard and Rob, with their knowledge and expertise make an awesome team taking us around one of the most beautiful countries we have visited. We would love to travel with them some more whenever we are in that part of the world.

Just returned from 4 fabulous days in Golden Bay with Richard and Dave. These guys are very talented photographers and happily tailor the program to suit your skill level, they have complimentary styles and share their time between individuals in the group so everyone benefits from their significant knowledge. Both Richard and Dave are easy to get on with and very attentive making sure all their clients enjoy a great experience. This is the third workshop I have attended with Richard and they have all been exceptional (even when the weather was difficult), great value and I go away with improved skills, highly recommended.

I attended the long exposure master class with Richard and Ken in November. The accomodation (Russell) in the Bay of Islands was outstanding and the program included visiting some fabulous locations on both east and west coasts of the North Island. We received plenty of one on one coaching and I really enjoyed being guided through the practical application of the techniques on the job so to speak. The workshop included the capture, processing and then printing of the image which really enhanced our experience. I think this is as good as it gets, fabulous experience
