To properly enjoy this castle you would need to go to an event there (such as a wedding) or one of the occasional touts. Otherwise, you have to look at the ruins from the public footpaths that skirt its perimeter. The corners are intact but there are no remaining walls but you do get to see 'inside' because of that.

I had no idea Sheriff Hutton had a castle, never mind such a huge one.

The internal area of the castle is on private land, and it is closed to the public. Though you can arrange a tour through the owners. There is a clearly signed footpath labelled 'castle circuit path' that does a complete lap of the castle with great views. Some of the towers are amazingly precarious.

The village is nice too, maybe a good pub nearby.

I used to come to Sheriff Hutton's Camping and Caravaning Club site for years but I never realised there was a castle. Set in a lovely idyllic village atop what I suspect is an artificial mount. Lovely little walk around though the castle itself is only accessible by appointment with the land owners.

It's a real shame that the grounds are not kept all that well. We were a little confused as we were driving down a small road nearby and we all of a sudden saw what looked like massive castle ruins.

Its not sign posted very well which made us think that maybe it wasn't open to the public but after closer investigation there was a small walk around that you could do.

This had not been maintained at all, we pushed through nettles, brambles and bushes to get around the first part.

Pretty sure there is a slaughter house behind the ruins due to the fact that it sounded like Daenerys Targaryen had birthed her dragons in there which all sounded a bit spooky.

Worth the visit

This castle that was so significant in the history of the north is in private hands and so can only be viewed from the footpath surrounding it.

Although we have visited Sheriff Hutton many times, this was the first time that we had taken the walk around the castle. We didn't find the best way of starting the walk - if we do it again, we will begin in the churchyard. The gate to the path is behind the church and you need to follow the trach to the right to reach the castle; the castle cannot be seen at that point. It is worth being aware that some parts of the path can be muddy even on a nice day but it is a very easy walk.

Even though the castle is very much a ruin, it is still impressive and we enjoyed the natural surroundings as well.

Lovely monument with an interesting connection to Richard III and Henry VIII's mother, Elizabeth of York. Pity you cannot go into the ruin, but there is a circular walk around the castle which isn't too arduous. After visiting the castle take a detour to the lovely church of St Helen & Holy Cross to see the tomb dedicated to Richard III's son, Edward.

Very well looked after walk around the ruins and moats. Access to the ruins is by appointment only. However, the walk around the perimeter is nice enough on its own and you will not have to be a veteran walker to get round the circuit. Good solid footware with a tread would be sufficient on a dry day. Some undulations but again suitable for a casual walker.

Stumbled upon this when we were attempting to find the pub, children enjoyed exploring, and also their first experience of “kissing gates”.

Possible to walk around the perimeter but unfortunately there are no orientation boards to tell you what you are looking at or the history of the Castle.
