We had a fantastic experience on this tour. Our guide, Maple, taught us so much about lava tubes and lave fields and pointed out so many interesting geological facts and discoveries in the cave. He was also a great story teller and has an incredible, dry sense of humor. I am still remembering some of the funny things he said! If you want to visit one lava tube in Iceland, I would go to this one...with Maple!

We visited Cave couple of weeks ago. I should say, that experience exceeded our expectations! Very well organized tour inside of this unique nature place. Cave is equipped with all needed infrastructure, including lights, stairs etc. Easy to reach a destination from Reykjavik. Worth of a half of the day experience. Interesting stories about history of this place etc. I myself was not sure what to expect first, but was pleasantly surprised how trip under the ground be so interesting. Thank you for the staff and management of the Cave for bringing joy and knowledge!

Based on a guide book suggestion, we ventured out for this lava tube experience at Viogelmir and were not disappointed in any way. It's important to note that this tubing experience is recently under new and superb management. Guide books might direct you to an adjacent family farm who owned and ran the tours in the past. You can now go directly to the Viogelmir signs and their brand new "office building". Very new, clean and great bathrooms before you get started. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. They equip you with hard hat helmets and helmet lamps. A short walk takes you the lava tube entrance. They are in the midst of installing some very sturdy and durable ramps throughout the tube. I honestly don't know how the family-run operation in the past did this without the new ramp equipment. It just makes it so much easier and safer. I've done some lava tubing in the past, but this is the largest one I've seen. They have lighting throughout and on our trip we were fortunate to see ice stalagtites and stalagmites. One of the tour guides (Mio) shared some great Icelandic folkloric tales which added richness to the entire experience. We did a 90 minute tour. If you visit their site you'll see a variety of tours and times. One cautionary note...to get down to the tube entrance you have to descend on a sturdy metal ladder securely installed to the rock face. Great experience. Highly recommend it!

Thank you so much for your words here on trip advisor. We have now removed the metal ladder and built a brand new ladder in the stile of our walking ramps. Thanks again. Cheers. H.Míó

The cave was very cool, but the 'guided tour' was obviously designed to stretch out the time to justify the 6500ISK price. The walkways and lighting made it to Disneylandish, felt like the experience was designed for small children and my granny. If you want a more rough and real experience go somewhere else like Leidarendi (Google it)

A nice drive to the cave, Not really a lot off signs for the cave only one sign on the last road to the cave. Facillitis at the cave are okay. There is tea and coffee also very expensive. For the price they ask for a tour, you expected coffee or tea included the tour. I nice in the cave, walking is slowly so everyone can do it! the guide telling about the cave whit a dry sense of humour. Nice to experience total darkness. But for the price it's not worth it!

Hi Haratim. Im sorry to hear that you where disappointed with your visit to the cave. All though from your review it seems that you enjoyed the caving it self, apart from the guides sense of humor. Price seems to be the point that concerns you and contributes to your low rating of the cave. Our price is infect very competitive when it comes to caving activities in Iceland, be it Ice-caves or other lava caves. A short internet search will proof that. I hope your visit to Iceland was an over all success and you enjoyed your visit despite the going rate of coffee being 250-350ISK. Cheers. H.Míó

Traveling through Iceland we came upon The Cave. The sites driving to the cave are spectacular, Seeing the lava fields and surrounding mountains and volcanoes with snow on them are breathtaking..

Not being prepared as we usually are, and reading the previous reviews beforehand, we arrived, paid and jumped in line for the next tour. The steps entering the cave were icy, (and as others have noted), it is Iceland, so you must deal with it, but it is rather dangerous for being stairs. It was cold down there, so people need to come prepared. Children- it is good for the children to see and hear this education, however, the parents need to realize what they are getting into with the distance in the cave, the time spent down there and steps to climb, The guide did speak on geology and other topics to be rounded to a group with different likes and interests.

I do not think I would have went to the cave in the first place if I had done my homework and realized how expensive it was. But once we got that far out, we thought we would see what was down there. It was nice to be able to walk into the cave, but not for the price you pay. By marketing and the other tourists "not knowing", they will do well with tours that bringing in massive groups.

I would not recommend only based on the price.

This is the 3rd of the 3 lava caves we visited in Iceland (also visited Raufarholshellir and Vatnshellir). I would say this is the best of the 3 we visited. This cave is the longest, and is the most walkable (they have built a wooden walk-way that extends the entire length of the cave). The base camp/area has nice bathroom facilities, and a decent-sized waiting area. The guide we had was fantastic - super friendly, super funny, and made the walk thoroughly enjoyable. He shared a lot of interesting information about the cave, and was very patient with our picture-taking. The tour lasted ~1.5 hours, and was well worth it. I would definitely do this tour again.

I drove to Viðgelmir and was there about half an hour before my tour started and I had already booked online. This was my first time to Hallmundarhraun and the area is very beautiful. About 20 people were in my group and we were set up with helmets with lights on. The guide led us to the cave and then started to share some interesting information about the history of the cave and the lava. I really enjoyed the cave and it was easy to walk trough and the lighting they have added gives dramatic effects and comes out great. I am from Iceland and I am glad I have seen this peace of it.

My wife and I visited the cave a few weeks ago during a 10 day trip to Iceland. Overall, it was a fairly average experience.

First, it is not particularly well signposted. When "The Cave" sign appears on the road, you are under the illusion that you have arrived, but actually it is a few km on a poor road to reach the building where the tour departs from. Why not write on the sign "5 km" with an arrow or something to make it more clear? Then when you reach the building, it still isn't completely clear you have arrived for the cave tours. Again, there should be something on the building to clearly mark this.

The building has facilities for tea and coffee and has two toilets, so is quite well geared up for visitors. The tour itself was supposed to be 1.5-2 hours, but actually lasted 1 hour 15 minutes. Our guide went by the name "Brian" and made a good effort to include humour in the tour. My wife and I did not particularly enjoy his sarcastic style of humour, but I'm sure many people did. His explanation of features and processes in and around the cave was rather limited and the ghost story part at the end just seemed a bit pointless and a bit of a time-killer to be honest. I would have preferred more time devoted to the geology of the caves.

It was really interesting to see a lava cave and there were many things to appreciate in the tour, but the guide was a bit disappointing and the price of 6500 ISK per person (that's about €53, £48 or $58) is ridiculously expensive. In Ireland we have the Marble Arch Caves (albeit limestone caves) and the price of a tour is £9.50 per person for a more enjoyable tour in my opinion.

I don't wish to sound negative with parts of this review, but I am only trying to be honest. There are definitely parts of the tour that are really interesting and worthwhile, but also parts that could be greatly improved.

We visited the cave this August, two adults and a child, and we want to say that it is a great experience, suitable for all ages and very interesting for children. The cave is beautiful, the guide's explanations were very interesting, and the experience of standing in a cold cave with no light at all was one of the coolest memories we'll take with us from Iceland. Also, I want to say that the staff of The cave is extremely kind and helpful: I left my coat there, and I've just received it in Spain, they sent it to me with no charge. So it's an experience that we would definitely recommed!
