We were looking for a stop along the way home on our trip. This park made Columbus, NE the perfect place! We love history and close relatives actually rode in this craft! The idea of the park by students and the remarkable way the points in history are depicted is amazing. The Higgins boat, historical figures, history on plaques, the 9/11 sculpture. All of it in a peaceful, clean and well-kept park! And the sand, you can walk on all the sands that was donated from each beach the Higgins watercraft landed on! A moving experience! Free and uncrowded in a Nebraska small town!

Wow- here is one of those surprises in small town America that hit a homer .
This memorial celebrates the man who built the boat that Eisenhower said won WW 2.
A plaque explains the whole story.
Obviously this small town is proud of its native son.

While traveling cross country and looking for a nice park to eat our lunch and stretch our legs we happened upon this memorial with many thanks to a AAA guidebook. What a NICE job has done with this!! It was very moving to see the various sculptures and tributes. Foe me though, I would have to say the Freedom Eagle (world trade center steel) probably moved me the most. Don't get me wrong all were great! It was also great to learn a little history here.

Great History lesson and accessible for all. Proud piece of History for Columbus, Nebraska. Children can play on it,but be respectful. Wall of honor of names of family members and veterans. My father's name is on the wall.

This is hands down about the best spot in Columbus to get your Pokemon refill balls, I mean the area looks like they have a lot of history planted down there, but if you want to find a location with a ton of of Poke stops this is the place to be.
Well shaded so need need to stand out in the sun when your collecting. Most Friday and Saturday nights Module Leurre's are going.

I absolutely love anything to do with history and WW2. My wife and I took an hour to walk around read all of the signs and see all of the sights. Our pictures could never do this justice. You have to walk the grounds your self. If you have any interest in the D-Day landings and are in the area it is worth the stop.

General Eisenhower said Andrew Jackson Higgins won the war (WWII) with his Higgins Landing Craft Boat. That's quite.a statement. This memorial to Columbus' native son shows one of the Higgins Boats--full-size waterline replica of the Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel. Three bronze statues coming off the boat represent soldiers from WWII, Vietnam, and Korean Wars. Don't neglect noticing the 7-ft wingspan eagle atop steel from the World Trade Center though it has nothing to do with Higgins or his boat.
Flags from 50 states fly around the Higgins Boat. They are pretty worn and should be replaced.
Information about the Higgins Boat, building them, transportating them to Europe should be provided.
Free.
Located in wonderful Pawnee Park that has lots of playgrounds, picnic benches, and a waterpark.

A local resident came up with a plan that changed the history of world war 2. On display is the Higgins boat used to land thousands of troops on European beaches. If you are a history buff this makes a pleasant stop to learn about the contribution of Andrew Jackson Higgins to the history of warfare.

Beautiful, sleek, and educational. Truly something worth checking out for any American loving patriot or interested individual. Access and location is questionable, especially if you are not familiar with the town. If so, you might 1) miss seeing it because it is down in a valley by the river or 2) find it difficult to access via winding roads and unmarked areas.
