You often never visit a place that you research on line that doesn't have some level of exaggeration or "not quite as advertised" regarding it's facilities or the experience it promises. That is not the case at Rouses 1+1. Having been raised by an Iowa Cattle Farmer - I knew a few things about cattle - but Cattle feeding in Iowa vs Wester Nebraska is night and day. My brief but incredible experience at Rouses will I hope continue to grow when I return which seems to be the norm at the 1+1. People that I rode with had been coming back year after year for almost 15-20 years. Tammy and Jerry Rouse and their right hand Horsewoman, T.O. (Tonya) are the real deal. You get the best of comfort and service excellence in the rustic but beautiful outfitted cabins, top notch award winning quarter horses that are impeccably cared for and extremely well mannered and some of the best food you will ever have prepared by an incredibly gracious and down to earth Ranch owner. Tammy and Jerry are experienced, authentic, and lovely people. They specialize in a no frills but extremely comfortable environment and entrusts the "guests" with real work and real riding. The two days that I spent on the ranch after just having recovered from double knee joint replacement was nothing short of perfection. This isn't a resort - this is a extremely well run cattle ranch. If you are looking to learn the ropes so to speak while also having respite in a beautifully appointed air conditioned custom built cabin Rouses won't disappoint. There are no gimmicks here - and if you aren't riding you are able to help in the barn or just rock on your porch - you aren't expected to do anything you aren't comfortable doing but you are encouraged to participate at whatever level you feel comfortable - or in some cases - where Jerry feels you would be most safe and the animals would be the most safe - which is exactly how my Grandfather treated me when I was growing up on the farm. While I was the "green horn" in the bunch - meaning all the other guests save for one were "Regulars" from Germany and Holland, as well as France - I was warmly greeted by authentically kind folks a-lot of whom had more practical horsemanship experience than I did. But I was well tended - was able to learn a-lot just by spending a little time with Jerry - but it was the other guests who were always willing to help - always striking up a conversation - and we looked out for each other while we were covering alot of ground. Just a great bunch of people from different parts of the world who for the time were all Ranch Hands at Rouses. The thing about the Rouse Ranch is that you aren't "fawned" over - no one is there to "fluff your pillow" and the personalities you meet of of real people, working a real ranch with a tremendous amount of work to be done. But the Rouses and The folks on the Ranch make you feel like you're part of anything you feel you can do and are willing to spend the time to make sure you learn the right way and the safe way. Nothing that wouldn't be taught or expected of a hired hand. I'd stress that anyone expecting to be pampered? You're appetite will definitely be but you will be expected to be on time - and you will be assigned tasks in terms of what the goals for the day are - be it welfare checks, herding, or sorting cattle, everyone is made to feel part of the daily schedule. And everyone works together - skill sets are matched up - greenhorns ride with seasoned, everyone stays in close communication and you are never unsupervised. But at the same time people give you the respect to assume you are following the basic rules of horsemanship and working together as a team. While you are taking in some of the most beautiful part of the Sandhills in the world. I can't say enough about the accommodations, clean - with great water pressure, super comfortable beds super comfortable bedding with the special touches of antique equipment and rustic wood through and through. I especially loved and well appointed handmade by Tammy headboards I'm sure I'll get to know Tammy and Jerry better as I go back - but whether you long to live like a cowboy, learn more about the animal husbandry that goes along with the job or just like to work up an appetite by working on horseback - Rouses 1+1 is exactly what I describes itself to be in a part of the country whose beauty is best experienced on the back of a well kept well tempered and award winning breed of horse. And man I can't say enough about the food! Every meal was hearty, fresh garden vegetables and some of the best Ribeye's I've ever had (and that's coming from Iowa first and 25 years living in Chicago. Tammy Rouse would put Mortons or Gibsons to shame with her Grilled Ribeye! I can't wait to "Ride the Brand" on my next visit! Thanks again Tammy, Jerry and T.O. for making my brief trip one I'll remember for a lifetime.

I had wanted to experience life as a cowgirl for many years and had spent sometime researching and planning this trip. I believe I chose well and Rowse's ranch provided me with my first adventure of this kind which was authentic, fun and informative. Tammy and Jerry are great hosts. The food was delicious, prepared superbly by Tammy and Jerry referring to me as 'Miss England' I found delightful and endearing. I was struck by how well the cows and horses are cared for. Yes, the cattle end up on the dinner table but their life on the pastures before then beats the horrendous alternative of the factory farming method which provides most of our meat. The other 5 guests during my week were a great bunch and I was fortunate to meet some really fine people - 3 from the USA and a couple from Germany. Jerry and Tammy, keep up the good work guys!

If you are looking for a place to experience a true working cattle ranch with all the fixins look no further than Rowse’s 1+1 Ranch. Even though I consider myself a “beginner” rider, I was given the help I needed to succeed but also the independence to try things on my own. I left feeling like a true cowboy. Jerry and Tammie are themselves a piece of history in Garfield county dating back 6 generations. This solid family history was evident with each interaction during my stay. Jerry was funny, informative, kind and generous with his time and answering my incessant questions. Tammie was so warm, genuine, kind and generously shared the bounty of her garden with us at every meal. T.O. was straightforward yet gentle when she helped me get my horse ready the first day and cheered me on when I did it myself (mostly) the second day. The trail rides each day were intentional and full of the purpose of a real working ranch. It was an honor to be included in the good work of ensuring the overall health and welfare of the cattle we checked up on. My horse was my guide and there was something about the rhythm of her gait and the squeak of the leather saddle that was good for the soul. I left feeling better than when I drove in. I highly recommend Rowse’s 1+1 to anyone who is looking for a true Nebraska ranch experience.
