A very special walk in the woods, 30m underground.
Oct 2019
Initially we wanted to go for a walk in the forrest near this bunker, not knowing the museum was so interesting. We arrived short before last admittance (16h), a friendly lady pointed out that we still had two hours for the visit and boy did we need them. This is one big construction with over 3Km of walkways all 30m below the surface. Remind to dress up warm, even in the Summer! It's only 11 degrees down there.
Impressive to see and unimaginable that over 600 people lived, worked and slept there up to 10 months at the time without daylight. After the visit you can do almost the same distance above ground through forrest and fields. A nice combination to see inside and the surroundings with some good views.

Great Visit - Real living history
Aug 2019
Learn how the fort was developed, built and used. Fantastic for kids with Kilometres of tunnels packed with military items, guns and history. You need 2 hours for this - well worth it!

History brought to life
Aug 2019 • Family
This place is stunning. I’ve not been anywhere that takes you so convincingly back in time. It takes no imagination to appreciate the endeavour of its creation and how horrific it must have been to have been stationed there.

A must see.

Must-see
Aug 2019 • Family
This is definitely one of the must-see places in the area. Be sure to wear good shoes because there’s a lot of walking involved. Incredibly interesting to discover all the different areas (kitchens, living quarters, Command post, ammunition block, power plant etc) in this humungous bunker complex and to learn more about the Maginot Line.

History in working order
Aug 2019 • Couples
Great work by volunteers to bring the 1930s fort back to life. Upto 50 m deep and it streches over 1 km underground, was largely selfcontained. Good personal explanations of the times, the technology and the underground gun-turrets. Very impressive!!

Last here 25 years ago.Always wanted to come again.Had to hire a driver to get me here. They now have a lift.I spent 90 minutes in a 1940 time warp at 12 c and enjoyed every minute.A fascinating place.

Like going back in time
May 2019 • Family
This is an absolute must for anyone interested in History and in WWII!!
The fortress is almost in perfect shape and one can think it all just happened a couple of years ago!
This is a self-guided tour, but there’s a lot of information in all interesting places... in French, German and English. At the power plant and at the gun tower there are also guided to give detailed explanations and share details of history.
But your questions is probably... should I come here or go to Four à Chaux? Depends...
Positive here: Self-guided, huge fortress, no need to be there on an exact time for a tour.
Negative: the lack of a guide.

unbelievable place. when you go down inside you realize a pretentious it was' how every detail was thought of and probably how safe the people inside felt
Today nature is so beautiful around it that its hard to imagine the horrors it represents

Exploring Alsace bunkers: glimpse into the past
Oct 2018 • Couples
Wonderful experience of exploring the bunkers and underground tunnels of one of the most controversial regions during WW1/2, Alsace. We got a short lecture from a young fluent-English speaking French guide about the air pressure of the bunker and how the air was filtered. She also shared further history about how Alsace region was transferred forward and back between Germany and France over the time and between wars and how mixed that region is.

There’s a quite of a walking distance to be made, approx 5-8KM so you wanna wear comfortable shoes.
It’s also quite colder than the ground temperature so dress accordingly.

Highly recommended and worth a visit! 2.5-3 hours would do.

Maginot Line...
Sep 2018 • Couples
The Fort of Schoenenbourg was the most heavily bombarded fort on the Maginot line. Germans dropped 160 tons of bombs on the fort, but despite the bombardment, the fort maintained it's defence capability. An interesting place to visit but wear the warm jacket.
