Enjoyed our tour by a very knowledgeable person and the carriage house was full of very interesting local artifacts, worth the price of admission.

This was an unexpected museum located in a small town in Montana. We found it while searching myscenicdrives.com. This is not a European castle, but instead a large stone house built in the 1800's. It is full of antiques and clothing from the era, that for the most part, are not in glass cases. You get to really see the items, and again, there are lots to view. The tour by a local guide was very informative and the cost very reasonable. Well worth the stop if in the area.

Worth going to. This is a nice surprise in this once popular spa town. It is nicely preserved and There are not many places left in this area that are open to the public. Great for those who like history

If you walk around White Sulphur Springs, almost every establishment recommends the castle as a "must-see". So, before we left town, we made a point to check it out.
The mansion itself is beautiful. They did a good job restoring the home and there is a lot of history to be seen. The carriage house is included in your admission and is worth checking out too (I personally recommend checking this out first, then the castle).
Make sure to have cash on you because they don't take cards.
What ruined the experience for us was the tour guide, I think her name was Rhonda. First off, we're in our late twenties and my father in law, in his mid 70's. There was one other couple with us, who were probably in their mid 50's.
Prior to the actual tour, I casually asked if it was guided. Rhonda responds, "YES. It is GUIDED. Like it says on the SIGN ON THE DOOR". Geesh. Not everyone reads the sign.
Several other points worth mentioning were that she treated us two like we were kids. Fair enough, we look like kids compared to the rest of the party. However, this was not done in a friendly joking manner, but rather in a condescending tone. She explained what a radiator was, like we were stupid, even though we didn't even ASK her about it.
When we were in the basement, there were two rooms across from each other. She was talking about one of them, when I poked my head into the other one. She said, "NO! It's THIS WAY". When it was time to check out the other room, my father in law stood at the doorway when she screams, "GO GO GO!!!!" It was embarassing and she could've just said "there's more to see, go inside".
There were other bad parts about her tour, but the last and final one was when we were upstairs and my husband asked, "was there a bathroom here?". She snapped and said, "YES! I SAID EARLIER, THERE WAS A BATHROOM THERE AND NOW IT'S A NURSERY!!!!". I kid you not. She screamed. A couple of seconds later she apologized and said she was tired from giving tours for two days in a row. My husband accepted the apology, but later asked for our money back.
She also seemed very sick, coughing loudly, running out of breath, and rushing us through the tour. She later blamed the other couple, saying they wanted it quickly. Whether it's true or not, we didn't want to be hurried and didn't appreciate being rushed. It was also like, 11am when we went through so it was definitely not because they were closing.
Maybe she was just having a bad day, but if you work in the service industry, you need to have basic manners which she did not have. I would seriously urge whoever is responsible for hiring tour guides to reconsider or train their employees/volunteers.

We stopped here today (monday, July 10)
some cool items in the Carriage House.
misunderstood the receptionist as this was a self guided tour. It's NOT.
went into the Castle and started looking around - like one would in most museums - big mistake. The "tour guide" was giving another couple a tour - we were accosted by the "tour guide" - very crabby lady with extremely poor customer service skills that we could not look around the Castle without a guided tour.. She Forgot we PAID to see this museum. we waiting around until she had completed her current "tour" and heard another round of "do you want to see the items or know about the family who lived here?" very offensive.
maybe it was a long day for her....but no one should be treated this way.
it's a cool mansion with great woodwork and stone work and items donated from locals.
I've never had such a poor customer service experience at a museum, I hope you have a better experience.
oh, no photos allowed. not sure why - very strange.

This is a must see when driving thru White Sulphur Springs. It's not only an interestingly built house, but is filled with local history and the docent was a local woman with a vast knowledge of the local history…it was very interesting and my whole family was inthralled!

We love to soak in the hot springs in town and when wandering around the streets of this small town decided to tour the house. Evidence of some real money in this town, built before electricity other that which was made at home.
The Castles and the Belts are interesting local mountains. Lots of history about the area in this museum. Worthwhile.

Stopped by the Castle in White Sulphur Springs on our way south from Great Falls to Yellowstone. We had only intended on making a brief stop but after seeing the outside of the house and a bit of the carriage shed asked for the tour - and glad we did.
Nice to see that the historical society has kept up with the maintenance of the house and provided items from the period to outfit the rooms.
Tours are guided only. The guide was very informative and we learned so much more than if we had just had the ability to look on our own.

For the small community of White Sulphur Springs this castle home is so full of history and beauty. The county historical society do a tremendous job bring this home back to life.

The phone number is 406-547-2324, time zone is Mountain. Oct 26th today, they are closed for the season. BUT the phone message offers to **arrange a private tour** and gives contact names and numbers. (An online search for "castle museum white sulphur springs" will find photos on Montana tourism sites.)
