My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our ride and the cookout. We were in the West Glacier area. Check-in was a breeze, a very nice young lady took care of us and led us to where we needed to be. Sarah, the guide, took our part of the riding group and gave us safety instructions, and demonstrated, while Kyler took the other ones. I thought her guidance and directions of how to handle the horse was extremely thorough and helpful. She answered conversational questions during the ride, about plants, trees, the horses, etc. She was so knowledgeable and friendly. She gave guiding instructions that were needed along the way. The cook did an amazing job and cooked the steaks perfectly to everyone's liking. He was a super nice and friendly guy, and the food was absolutely delicious, was presented very well, the choice of drinks was awesome, the fire pit and the smores were absolutely a fantastic touch. The conversation around the campfire was enjoyable and we belly-laughed more than once. Kyler was really funny and enjoyable to be around. The rapport among the 3 workers really made the conversation so easy and fun. The whole experience was one of the best things we did during our 10-day visit around the Glacier Park.

My daughter and I had a wonderful experience on our 2 day trail ride. Our guide, Chad, was so knowledgeable and gave us lots of tips on the outdoors. The horses were very calm and the could not have asked for a better ride. I would recommend this trip to anyone that has a love for horses and the outdoors...

We would have given 5 stars except Jess, who checked us in, was very rude. After the company rescheduled our ride for the next day due to flooding, we were not expecting her to treat us as if we had inconvenienced them. She made rude comments, rolled her eyes at us and made our initial impression a very bad one. Once we were past her, everyone else was amazing. They were so friendly and funny. Our horses were beautiful and so calm but still had personalities and made the ride interesting. The trail was very muddy but they just trudged right though. Our guide, Kyler, was very nice. Lots of jokes and photo ops too.

I scheduled two rides for my vacation which is happening next week. I received a call 1 week before my first ride that my rides were being cancelled because the horses that I need to ride won't be available. I am a heavier rider (still under their stated 250lb weight limit) and because of that apparently they have specific horses I would need to ride and those horses will be unavailable as of the 11th. Unfortunately, I don't even arrive into town until the 11th so reschedule was off the table. I am receiving a full refund for both rides since they cancelled. However, I consider it very poor customer service to cancel so close to my scheduled ride. I've been planning my vacation for several months and had paid for these particular rides a month ago (at which time my weight was disclosed). Now I am last minute looking for someplace that might be able to fit me for riding.

I wish I could leave a good review. I know that times are tough, but I still believe simple, kind etiquette is needed. We were in Whitefish for a week on a family vacation. On our day of arrival, we called to make a reservation for a horse trail ride during the week. When we called, the message said the best way to get through is to go to the website and follow the directions. I did this, asking for a specific date, time and number of riders. No one called Saturday or Sunday. I called again on Monday, this time leaving a message. I also sent another request through their website. I had no response on Monday or Tuesday. On Wednesday at 12:05 p.m. I received a voicemail saying if I called back immediately I could have a trail ride on Thursday at 3:00 p.m., but at a different location. I called back at 12:09 pm. and had to leave a message that said, yes we wanted the 3 p.m. and to let us know where this new location would be. I cancelled our other reservation I had made with another company. I did not receive a call back on Wednesday. I finally called on Thursday morning and left another message. I received an e-mail on Thursday mid morning that said they were sorry, but we couldn't have that time and next time we should call them back immediately. This was very rude as I had left messages and used their website daily with no response. The other ride we had cancelled also couldn't accommodate us at the late date. We did not get the trail ride we had wanted on our vacation. If I could have talked to someone, this would not have been a problem.

Hi dcsmeyer, we are so sorry to hear that you did not get the trail ride you wanted on your summer vacation. We understand that it can be very frustrating to not receive immediate response or accommodations, especially considering that our modern times usually provides at the drop-of-a-hat!
This summer season has been particularly challenging in filling all requests from potential guests. Half of our Glacier National Park trail rides remained closed for the season due to our current public health climate, thus both our operations and reservations office have experienced an overwhelming volume of activity that we were not prepared for. We do not typically allow our guests requests to slip through the cracks, and we are so sorry that you feel this happened to you. We ask our future guest reading this review, to have patience with our booking system and to expect delays. Many of our neighboring outdoor recreation businesses are experiencing similar issues, please be aware that booking trips with any company in or around GNP should be done at least two weeks out at this time. We are all looking forward to next season in hopes to offer our full trip line-up, and the excellent service that we are known for. Again, please accept our understanding and apologies for any disappointment in your experience.
Kindest Regards, Swan Mountain Outfitters

The horses looked healthy and were well behaved trail horses for beginners with no horse experience.
CONs
As someone who has ridden horses my entire life, this was a typical tourist horseback ride with horses signal file and very close together. Based on the website description of the 2 hour ride that we signed up for, I was under the impression that we would be able to see the beautiful scenery of Glacier during most of the ride. We rode in the woods for all but 5 minutes of the 2 hour ride and when you could see through the trees it was of the road. The best part of the ride was going over on a bridge over a creek. I was supposed to go on this trail ride with my mom, when booking this excursion online we read the warning that riders must not be over 250 lbs. My mom and I signed the paper work when we arrived disclosing our weights myself 140lbs, my mom 220lbs based off of our home scale. One of the workers then called my mom over, weighed her on a scale and said since she was under 6ft tall (5’8) and their scale said she was 227 they would not allow her to ride. While there were 3 men on the ride who did not get their weight questioned and we were able to see that one of them was 230lbs. Keep in mind this outfitter had horses of many statures, multiple of which were draft crosses. It was extremely humiliating for my mom to be told she weighs too much to ride in front of everyone else riding. If this outfitter is going to be this strict on weights they need to be measuring height and taking weights on EVERYONE that they suspect may be over their weight limit. I am extremely disgusted with how this was handled especially since a man weighing more than my mom was still allowed to ride. We did not receive a refund for this.

The staff was very helpful. No problem there. The actual ride , the scenery was all woods, which made it kind of boring on a trail ride. Because of the mud squishing , most of us could not hear our wrangler explain features we were riding. It would have been nice to get a better explanation of what the trail is like, and what the options are. Was somewhat disapointed

Hi patriciasH3845NV,
Thanks for your feedback, it's always great to hear that our staff was helpful! Sorry to hear that you were not thrilled with the scenery during your trail ride. You did not list which ride you took, but it sounds like you booked one of our known wooded trail rides, perhaps from our West Glacier location? If so, this two hour ride is clearly listed as a mostly wooded trail ride through stands of lodgepole pines. Though we are sorry it was not what you were expecting. In West Glacier, we are surrounded by large beautiful tracts of land, and our trail rides take place within the Flathead National Forest. To reach views, it takes more than a two hour round-trip ride, at this particular location. If our guests would like more views, we highly encourage riders to book a half-day, or a full day ride. Thanks for riding with us.
Kind Regards,
Swan Mountain Outfitters

The ride I booked was going to be for ppl who had a horse or toke lessons and was suppose to go into Glacier to lookout mountain that ride was canceled due to weather issues I was rebooked on another ride I specifically ask if this ride was also for ppl with horses and I was told yes. When I arrived I was riding with a group of beginners which is what I was trying to avoid. Wranglers nice and helpful

I am a life long horse back rider and when I heard about this Chalet ride it spoke to me and I knew I had to come back to Glacier to experience it. This was AMAZING so magical to ride to the beautiful chalet and watch it appear in the mountains as we came out of the forest. I do recommend this ride for experienced horse riders since there are some areas that can be intimidating and Swan was very upfront this was for experienced riders. Bella was a great guide and the horses were beautiful and well cared for. This was a very long and challenging ride but the pay off of being at the Chalet and having a lovely mountain lunch was worth it!

My husband and I came here the morning of our wedding! It was opening day for them and we were the first ride of the season. Danielle was a fantastic guide. She was very friendly and had some great dad jokes to tell along the way. She was very knowledgeable of the land, history and horses. You could tell she is really passionate about what she does!

Hi- We are staying in Apgar Village in mid-August. My 8 y/0 son wants to go for a ride. He has done a 1 and 2 hour ride in Great Smokey Mountain NP and a half day ride in Costa Rica. He has enjoyed all of them although the half day ride was a stretch for him last year. I suspect some of it may have been that the horse my husband rode kept trying to bite his horse (The trail ride was just the 3 of us with the guide and we were riding freely, not on trails). I am wondering what trails you would recommend at either Apgar or Lake McDonald. I would like to get some views of some scenery.

We think the rides just outside of the park, at the West Glacier corral, are really fun, too! Just throwing that out there. Have fun!

Hi, from your Many Glacier Trail Rides, which would you say is the most scenic? Thank you.

Hi! Most people say that the Cracker Lake all day ride is most scenic. But it depends what your looking for, as they are all shockingly beautiful rides, and the all day ride is not for everyone. Our half day and two hour rides are very scenic, try the two hour Cracker Flats or the half day Sherburne. Thanks! Katie

Debating between 2 different rides out of Many Glacier. The 1/2 day Piegan Valley (8am) or the Sherburne Overlook (12pm). Anyone has preferences between the two? Which one is more scenic?

Hi! You cant go wrong with views from Many Glacier trail rides. Both that you mentioned are beautiful, you will see far less people on Sherburne Overlook, that's the ride I'd choose next time. Thanks! Katie Miller

Which is the most scenic ride in west glacier or from apgar corall? Would love to do a trail with our 11 yr old son who has done horse/mule riding on trails before. Might combine it with a white water raft in the afternoon.

Hi! For the most scenic ride in West Glacier, I would recommend the full day ride, if you have both ridden before and can physically handle that kind of time in a saddle. After that, I recommend the half day, Glacier Gateway ride, which is the most popular. You get some limited views into GNP after riding through stands of forest. You will also get views of Strawberry Mountain, and into the wilderness. From Apgar corral, I recommend the half day trail ride to Apgar Lookout, this ride offers great views into the valley, towards, the Swan Mountains, and great views of Glacier National Park. If you can handle the half day ride, do Apgar Lookout! Katie SMO

I can ride, but can't mount on my own. How much help do you provide in mounting?
SwanMtnCompanies
Coram, Montana, United States2 contributions
Hi Faith,
We typically require guests to mount on their own from the ground at the corral to ensure that they can remount a horse out on the trail if they have to get off for any reason. The preferred method is to mount from the ground, with a wrangler assisting you with a "leg up". That said, we do have mounting blocks if absolutely necessary. Hope that helps!

Hi 1raven1,
Arrangements can be made for a drop-off and pick up at Sperry Chalet; as long as our trail rides are operating during the time of your lodging reservations and we have availability for the time frame you are requesting, which they typically are. We recommend that you call reservations to check those dates against your reservation dates and make a plan from there. Call 406-387-4405, thanks! Swan Mountain Outfitters

hi, we are three adults with really no horseback experience but do want a 2 hour ride with much scenery and into the interior as we can in that little time. what would you suggest for a trail ride? thanks, mary
SMRswanlake
Columbia Falls, MT7 contributions
Hi Mary,
Thanks for the question, it is a good one. Since we operate trail rides from several locations I have favorites from each. The best way to really get out there is with a full-day or multi-day ride, but since you are beginner riders, that may be too much time in the saddle. My recommendation for the biggest bang for your buck views-wise, is any of our two hour rides from Many Glacier, on the East Side of Glacier National Park. Seeing Many Glacier from between the ears of a horse is a true Montana experience. Any of the two hour rides from Many Glacier is laden with big mountain views. You will likely be riding with other people who book trail rides, but you can call reservations to see which times are less traveled. If you have a half-day to ride in our Swan Lake area location, I would recommend that ride. You will be on the trail with little to no other people with grand views of the lion creek drainage and views of the Mission Mountains from your lunch spot. This location is about a 1 hour and 20 minute drive from the West entrance of Glacier National Park. So if your visiting the park you may want to plan accordingly for a Swan Valley ride. Additionally, you may be interested in a llama trek, this is hiking in the Swan mountains region, in beautiful Montana country...with a llama. The bonus is they carry your gear and a guide takes care of all the details. I recommend the half-day, full day or overnight trips. You can reach reservations at 406-387-4405 Happy Trails! Swan Mountain Outfitters
Hi Everyone
We are thinking of taking the overnight riding fishing trip. Sounds like about 6 to 7 hours on horseback. Arriving at base camp then trout fishing. Going to bed early and riding back to the ranch. We are staying in Whitefish. Large outdoor nature loving family with experienced riders.
Any feedback?
Thanks

Hi Mary D, Thanks for the inquiry. The overnight ride and fishing trip is a great trip, it allows you to get out there for a taste of the real Montana near the Swan Mountains. This trip gives you time to see Montana from horseback, experience Montana fishing, and camp overnight under the stars while our guides take care of all the details including meals, fishing and riding gear and specifics. Our guests love this excursion, often recommending the overnight trip if time doesn't allow for the full 3-7 day pack trip into the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Depending on the time-frame for your trip request and our availability with possible trip customization, we are happy to set you up with a reservation. Please call reservations at 406-387-4405, or send a trip inquiry online through our website at Swan Mountain Outfitters.
We look forward to seeing you!

Hi there,
The Grinnell Lake half day is the one that best fits what you are describing. However, it is not usually offered before mid July because the trails are too wet. A good back up option is the Swiftcurrent Ridge ride. The water views are of lakes from a distance and up high. Both of these are offered out of the Many Glacier Corral.
Thanks!
