An old ghost town, but with a fascinating history - go to the Philipsburg Museum for the story! There are pieces of the town that remain, but not much.....still a interesting drive up the mountain.

So, mostly my rating is because I didn't get a lot of time to explore. Most of the "buildings" are more of seeing where the building foundation was built. But there are some nice little signs giving you some information. Also, we were a little confused about where we sould park, and after discovering that we could have used a map...well, what can I say? It's a ghost town. The suggested time to complete the Granite Ghost Walk is about 2 hours. Plan for that, and wear hiking type gear - bring water!! Knowing there is a map, we are wanting to return (better prepared) and take the walk.

Google took us an odd route up the worst roads I've ever driven up. There was a more sensible route down - so do be careful. The whole place is abandoned and left to gracefully retreat back into the hillside - collapsed buildings, little fallen down shacks and equipment left dormant. Interesting for a little wander - just take care which road (the one down was still a dirt track).

Was just at Garnet Ghost town none of these photos look familiar? Are there 2 different ghost towns? The one we went to was outside of Missoula off highway 200.

First, don't try to follow Google maps, you'll be taken to a private drive or worse try to drive the terrible roads. If you follow Google, take it until you get to a white street sign that says Granite and turn right.

Beyond that the road was fairly well maintained, but it was narrow so take your time. At the top you can park in a few spots. Look online and search for a map by "cascade bill mt05-001" and you can plan your hike.

The bank, union hall, superintendent house, and mills a and b are in the best shape of all buildings. Most others are just a stone foundation. The historical markers are mostly intact, but a few are well worn and hard to read. The granite ghost walk trail is not well maintained and is not marked well. The grass is high in spots and many other places you have to walk around to find what most resembles a trail. Wear long pants or spray yourself with Deet. I ended up finding a few ticks.

If you visit Philipsburg it's not a far trip. If you're going just for the ghost town, its not worth it.

Neat place. Most everything is gone. Directions on Google are very wrong!!! Do not attempt to follow them or you will encounter signs saying “you consent to rape if you go any further” and then might be met by a scary guy in an ATV not happy you are on his mountain!! Road is very bad. Need clearance vehicle to get up there. No real maps for the self guided tour. Road is very long.

While you have some spare time in Phillipsburg. Road is not too bad a drive, a few ruts here and there. I never engaged my 4wd.
As you get closer you'll start seeing a few things on roadside evidencing the old Miner Town. There are signs in place explaining the old derelict structures. Some good walking trails once you are up to the old town. I didn't see any Ghosts.

This was a neat old ghost town to explore, especially going up to the stamp and being able to wonder around. However, it can be a bit confusing if you're following google maps. If you do not have a 4WD, then make sure you take a right on Granite Rd. You'll see the Granite Ghost Town in very small letters underneath the road sign name.
Many of the signs in the town were worn down and hard to read. I wish they all could be re-done.
