The trail system at Blue Mountain Recreation Area is awesome. You can take a short 30 minute loop or extend your hike to hours. Open meadows at the base and timbered landscapes the higher you go in elevation. Pet friendly and dogs do not need to be on a leash.

Enjoyed getting out to stretch the legs and get some fresh air. There were miles of possible trails to take that ranged from easing walks to more strenuous hiking. Saw some amazing overviews of the city and surrounding areas.

Lengthy hike early on a Sunday morning on the Blue Mountain trails. Outstanding views of the Bitterroot and Clark Fork rivers, and panoramic view of Missoula. Very good opportunity for bird watching and only a few joggers, hikers, and dog walkers on the well maintained trails. Numerous parking areas and pretty good signage on the forest roads. Will make a... More

Only 5-10 minutes by car from the city, this vast open area provides great views of the city, the river and the mountains. My dog absolutely loved hiking here. It is peaceful and usually, no matter how many cars are in the parking lot, you almost feel like you have the place to yourself. With the many trails, you can... More

Miles of trails, open meadows and wooded areas. Lots of friendly dogs/owners. We go all the time as it's so close. Wish everyone would clean up their own poops.

Access to trails and river close to town. Easy for children and families to spend time in the outdoors without having to travel very far.

Blue Mountain area is a true gem in Missoula County. Situated at the tail end of the Bitterroot Mountains, the trails criss-cross amid the rolling foothills below Lolo Peak. Ponderosa pines dot the sides of the hills covered in knee-high native grass. Every turn has a fantastic view of the Missoula Valley, Bitterroot River, Squaw Peak and Maclay Bluffs.

We drove along Blue Mountain Rd, a little icy conditions. There is some outstanding spots views, no services along the road, not recommended at night in Winter (low mobile signal).

We took a walk along the river. It would have been better if it had followed closer to the river. But the walk was not crowded and the other walkers were friendly and courteous.
