Interesting history of the chinese in Butte

A very insightful tour was given by the guide on the day. He brought to life what Butte's Chinatown was like.

Went to this museum because of Trip Advisor comments, but it was way cooler than even described. Heather, the woman running the museum the day we went 8/25/16, explained to us that the buildings were preserved by some thoughtful townspeople, but even more awe-inspiring was that someone had bought the belongings of the inside of the two Chinese businesses about... I have visited the Mai Wah on several occasions, but this last visit was to see the wonderful new collection of dresses brought from China. It was enjoyable and interesting.

Interesting site for a peek into Chinese History in Butte. Small but has many items from its past. The signage could be better to help identify items on display.

I thought the packages, fans, shoes, large fans, baskets, pretty boxes, store cases, dresses and family photos were very interesting. I appreciated stools to sit and rest while studying exhibits. My husband went upstairs but with my disabled legs there was no way I could climb 15 let alone 26 stairs. But my husband went up there. He told me about the stove... More

We had a nice tour of this small museum with a group of 35 teachers. Our guide was very informative and the displays were interesting of the history of Chinatown here in Butte. I like seeing the old store as well as what a Chinese kitchen looked like. I think it was worth the stop for us to explore here... More

This was a surprisingly interesting and informative attraction in Butte Montana that does a wonderful job of presenting the history of the large Chinese population that lived in Butte during the peak of the precious metal mining era. The tour guide was extremely friendly, knowledgable, and communicative. Highly recommended!

The Mai Wah foundation is trying valiantly and with a tiny budget to preserve this piece of Butte's once-vibrant Chinese immigrant community. They have an excellent collection of artefacts and are working through it to restore a "mercantile" back to its original condition. The small museum is an accurate and clear-eyed story of the Chinese in Montana, including the effects... More

We were here at 2:00 p.m. on a Thursday afternoon. The lights were out and the door was locked. Hours of operation are incorrect.

Who knew there was a sizable Chinese population in Butte, Montana! What a great slice of history. Butte was once the largest city West of the Mississippi, and it had a big Chinatown among its many immigrant communities. This is a great attraction for visitors (if you can get in without becoming a member). Check it out.
