Big Fork Anglers is a great outfit. Its a good store with lots of selection. It has a warm, friendly, easy going and sincere atmosphere. The owner, Jason, was my guide for a 1/2 day fly fishing excursion from a drift boat on the Swan River. I had a blast, unplugged and caught rainbows despite the fast running river. I found Jason to be very experienced, a good teacher and patient. He's also very knowledgeable about some of the history of the region and the river and shares that with you as you drift downstream. Jason worked hard to get me to those holes where the trout were hanging out even if he had to row upstream. I heartily recommend Big Fork Anglers and give them 5 stars without any reservation.

My wife and I fished with Jason today on a float trip. We are barely above beginner level fly fishers. The booking experience was easy and pre-trip communication was very helpful. Jason called a few days in advance to discuss our abilities and the current state of local fishing options. Due to the runoff the rivers are running fast (and thus more difficult to catch fish), so he offered a lake fishing experience that would likely result in more fish. We really preferred a more scenic river float and recognized we might not catch anything (especially given our relatively novice experience). On the day of the trip we met Jason and made the short trip to the launch point on the Swan River). From the moment we met Jason and saw the river - we knew we made the right choice. Jason is just an awesome person and the river was beautiful. Jason was so patient and obviously very knowledgeable about the river, the fish, and where the fish would likely be located. We spent the next several hours (it went by so fast) enjoying the conversation, the amazing scenery, AND catching some nice rainbow trout. Yes, we caught fish. BIG fish. We highly recommend fishing with Jason and Bigfork Anglers. It was a special day.

I was not familiar with fishing the area and have always found a guided trip makes for a more pleasurable trip in those circumstances. I narrowed my Google search to two fly shops in the area and, after initial calls, elected Big Fork Anglers as Sean was more personal, engaged, and helpful in that initial call. Ultimately, I felt he was more interested in my business than the other shop I called in Whitefish. A summary of my experience follows: TL;DNR Summary: Could not be happier with my choice to use Bigfork Anglers Fly Shop for my guided fly fishing experience in MT. It’s still a family business and you feel that in how friendly, engaged and knowledgeable they are, and ultimately the quality of experience they deliver. Best money I ever spent and ended up with a “bucket list” experience day consisting of everything for which I had hoped. For more details read on… Booking the Trip: Not being familiar with the different river options, I found Big Fork Anglers website and my initial call with Sean very helpful. I felt Sean struck the right balance between hearing what was important to me and also sharing with me what river options were producing action at the time and the relative availability of guides. Ultimately, I chose the Blackfoot for the scenery and the raft boat experience; even though that had more challenges for Big Fork in finding me a guide for the days I was available. Because the guides are on the river all day, it took longer than what I was expecting to get things sorted and confirmed; eventually, not getting finalized until just the day before the trip. As a traveler coming in from out of town and excited about fishing this left me a bit anxious and made planning other things around the trip a bit challenging; however, I learned, while on the river, from their prospective they had my reservation committed on their end the whole time and that I really had nothing about which to be concerned. Pro tip: Watch for their e-mail, which I had missed, which confirms the reservation and has a ton of useful pre-trip planning tips around key things like licenses, what to bring and wear, etc. Day of the Trip: Jason was really good about last minute fishing reports updates and reconfirming I still wanted to fish the Blackfoot even though fishing had been better at that time on the Cloud Fork. Like Sean and Russell, he struck the right balance on making sure I was getting the choice best for me. He was also good about setting the right expectations with me on the day around fishing, river traffic, etc. I think he played me a little bit, in the end, because he picked a perfect stretch of water to fish which was gorgeous, not at all crowded by my standards, and way more productive than he had set me up to believe! 😉 Jason was also on top of making sure I had clear instructions on where and when to meet and he arrived on time and was prepared with modern and appropriate gear and tackle. Since I was traveling, I didn’t bring any of my own and was pleased with the quality of what he provided. Jason was incredibly knowledgeable of the river, where the hazards were, where the fish were and what they were hitting. This is exactly what you pay for when you get a guide and Jason delivered on all my expectations. He ultimately put me into a large number of highly productive opportunities and pretty much served the fish up to me on a silver platter. In other words, mine to land or lose! We hit rainbows, cutthroats, cutbows and even a Bull trout. But, for the Brown, I was set up for almost completing the Western Grand-slam! I was given the opportunity to work both nymphs and dry flies and Jason knew exactly when to switch back and forth. Jason was also incredibly patient with me as he coached me through all aspects of the experience including casting, mending, setting the hooks on the strike and landing the fish. Even with moderate fly fishing experience there is still a lot to keep in mind, and I appreciated his patience even when I repeated the same mistakes with the adrenaline running and so many things to manage. I also left the day incredibly appreciative of the professionals these guides are with all they have to manage at one time between navigating the boat, reading the river, spotting where the fish are feeding, knowing what to offer in each circumstance, and managing the angler. All that pressure comes of me with a guide so I can just enjoy the scenery and catching fish and these guys truly earn their money and their tip; Jason was nothing but excellent in every sense. Even down to being so humble I was not even aware he was the Bigfork Anglers Fly Shop owner until we had already been on the river an hour or two and I connected a few dots.

We went on the Flathead River with Avery and Brad as our guides. They were so patient with us as fly fishing rookies. It was a wonderful trip and the two of them could not have been better teachers. We saw three Eagles and caught 10 fish between the four of us. So much fun, well with the price.
