I went by pontoon to Wildhorse Island last year and LOVED the people and the value. For this summer I have reserved a spot on the pontoons again, and when I had to make changes to my reservation, Matt was VERY helpful.

I highly recommend Boat Rentals and Rids on Flathead Lake from both of these experiences.

I've read some of the negative reviews as well, and while I'm sorry that others had difficulties, but when I read what they tried to do it made me say "duh" in my head. The complaints I've read are due to trying things that common sense would suggest we shouldn't, or having unrealistic expectations.

We had a great experience with these guys in July 2021. We rented one of the ski boats for our family of five. The staff was really helpful in explaining everything to this novice boater. They also helped us change out some of the equipment (wakeboard) that didn't fit one of the kids. Great, beautiful location near Wildhorse Island, although sadly we didn't see much wildlife on our visit there. Even though there are some places to eat lunch on the lake, they're pretty far away so I'd recommend bringing your own if you do an all-day rental.

Thank you for your kind review, and great insights/suggestions. Our lake is huge (195 miles of shoreline) and there’s lots to see and do! We hope to see your happy family again.

We rented a Jet Ski for our daughter and her boyfriend . for two hours. We didn't know what to expect so was a little apprehensive. The prices were the best all around the entire lake so I was a little worried about the condition of the Jet Ski. All my fears were put to rest! This place was such a Gem! Family owned and totally organized. The owner (I forgot his name) was nice and friendly and explained all the rules and regulations clearly. It just took a few minutes and they were off! They loved it so much! I forgot to check the time we left so when they came in to the dock pay for gas, I told them to go back out for another 20 minutes or so. Turns out I got the time wrong and they went over by about 15 minutes. The owner was so kind and didn't charge us for that! I can't say enough about how wonderful this place is! I can't wait to go back there! it was the highlight of our trip! Thanks so much for the incredible day!

We were 3 kayakers (2 with some experience and 1 expert). Matt gave us a speech that since the average person walks 3.3 miles per hour (I have no idea where he came up with that) and that is about the distance to the landing spot on Wild Horse Island, it should take us about an hour or an hour and a quarter each way. For the 5 hour rental, that would give us about 2.5 hours on the island. We were prepared to go with that option, but then he told us for another $20 per person, we could double the time to 10 hours and recommended that, so we did.
After 90 minutes, we were less than one third of the way. It was a windy day, but not incredibly windy. We decided at that point that we would never make it to the island, but we had a problem. In his introductory speech, he told us that if we got stranded he could pick us up but “you really don’t want that because I am very expensive” (his words). With that in mind, we went to the town dock and one of us got a ride back to his place to get our car. This is where it got bad. We asked for straps to bring the kayaks back. They had some straps, but we were unfamiliar with the type of strap. The woman there would not take a minute to show us how to use them. We asked a boater at the dock if he was familiar with them and he wasn’t either, but he was nice enough to put the kayaks on his trailer and follow us back to drop them off.
When we returned the kayaks, a young woman asked me how the day went. I told her that we never would have made it to the island and that 2 kayakers we spoke to (one with a dock on the lake and the other at the town dock) said they never could make it that quickly either. She said nothing, but must have gone over to tell Matt. The next thing I knew he came over to me in order to repeat his “3.3 miles per hour” speech and told me he had 27 kayakers the day before and all made it in that time. I told him “whatever” just so I didn’t have to deal with him. He then went over to my daughter on the dock to give her the same speech.
To sum up, his reaction to customers who had a bad experience and never got to the island was to lecture us. He does boat trips to the island, but he didn’t offer that. He didn’t even offer to charge us the 5 hour rate rather than the 10 hour rate he upsold us to, even though we returned the boats in under 5 hours. It was clear that to him, every customer is a one shot deal and won’t be returning, so there is no reason to try to make the experience a pleasant one.

Hello Rhinestone Cowboy 2, we do our best to take care of each of our many guests with professionalism and as much grace as possible. We do have a very large percentage of returning guests every year. Your experience was unusual. Kayaking is enjoyable for just about anyone. It is exercise-at times arduous. You kayaked at a rate of approximately one-half of one mile an hour, which is inexplicably slow. As explained most guests kayak about the same rate of speed as they walk. (My pacer.com, Wikipedia.org, thehealthy.com and more all list the average walking speed at just over 3mph). July (when you visited) is always our busiest month. We instruct kayaking guests not to go beyond their capabilities. The logical decision for guests not making adequate progress is to turn around and kayak back negating the need for rescue services. However, we are first responders and perform a few rescues on the water each season, for all people (not just guests) who need that service. We have our island shuttle services advertised and many guests prefer that service. We operate by reservation only and are sold out most every day in July. Conversely many people prefer the reward of spending time on the water paddling.

My wife & I rented a small ski boat today and spent the day out on Flathead Lake. The rental process was quick & easy, and the review of safe boating practices and orientation to the boat was adequate without being overbearing. I would highly recommend a day on the lake to anyone needing a day to relax and unwind.

We had a reservation on July 18 but they had to cancel due to high winds. They texted us the night before which we appreciated so we could make other plans for the day. We then decided to rebook for the following Friday unfortunately we could not get a pontoon as we had originally booked but they did give us a speed boat. When we got there we asked again if they had a pontoon as it was looking like rain and he said they could let us use the one they use so we accepted. This was not as nice as the other pontoons but we made it work and we appreciated his willingness to accommodate us (no one can control the weather). Sure enough it started raining and we were cold so appreciated being under the canopy! We then rented a jet ski which was a lot of fun. The 4 hours rental time went so fast! Admittingly we chose this company because of price but we are so glad we did the staff was very helpful and friendly. Thanks for a great time on Flathead Lake!! There is no place to change your cloths so come dressed for the activity. However there is a porta potty.

If I have my direction right, Boat Rentals and Rides is located 40 minutes SW of Kalispell, Montana. You can rent a boat for a day @ $240. Or a group of people can take a boat $40 pp from Big Arm, MT to Wild Horse Island. Which is what we did. Those trips leave the docks @ 9AM & 12PM respectively. Plan for an outing of 4 hours. Flathead Lake is beautiful. Ask for Matt.

Honestly, we chose Big Arm Boat Rentals based on price alone. But we were so pleased with our rental. We did a speedboat, it was just the two of us, and it was perfect! The owner explained everything and the staff was helpful. And, the lake! It was so beautiful! You enter a calmer bay area with an easy drive to Wild Horse Island. You are asked to not drive the boat onto the shore, as not to damage the boat, but we had so much fun driving around that we ultimately didn't want to. You could have easily driven close to shore and anchored if you wanted to disembark. My only grievance was that you have to fill the tank yourself at the end of the rental time, but the fill up station is pretty much right beside the rental spot and it's an easy in and out. Would recommend for a day of beautiful sight-seeing and leisure.

Thank you for your kind review. We strive to ensure each guest has the best experience possible and we are happy you had a memorable visit to the lake and around the island. While our open bow ski boats are made of fiberglass (and not able to be ‘beached’), our pontoon boats, with aluminum pontoons, are routinely beached at Wild Horse Island’s main trailhead, Skeeko Bay. The pontoons aren’t as fast as the ski boats and everyone has a unique preference. We hope to see you again:)

We rented a couple of kayaks to take out to Wild Horse Island. The owner, Matt, snuck us in without a reservation, and it was an incredible experience. Definitely recommend Big Arm rentals to anyone looking for a memorable experience and excellent service.

We had a bad experience due to mechanical issues with the boat. It was not safe to take this particular boat on the water. We were treated like stupid tourists, even though we own a boat. Tried to explain that boat was not running correctly and over loaded. It was a 8 person or 750 lbs boat, we had 5 adults and one toddler. That was not the best judgement. Some people have had better experiences here. Recommend getting a boat from Lakeside or Polson, you have more options.
