- Kelly LRepublic, Missouri1 contributionAmazing experience! Can't wait to go back! What beautiful birds! It was amazing being able to see them all up close. I took a ton of pictures. It was cold when we were there but would have otherwise walked the trail. We will definitely be back!!! I love the T-shirt I bought at the gift shop too.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 19, 2023
- Mary K1 contributionAn absolutely wonderful place to visit! Friendly staff too! This is a wonderful place, very comfortable and scenic with everything one needs for a visit. Clean and beautiful! On Oct 20, 2023 I took advantage of the "Hold an Exotic Raptor" event, and I had the best time! Hayley is a lovely person, very knowledgeable, friendly and kind, she taught me so much about the owl I was holding. I was the only person that day so I got to hold the Tawny Owl named Buzzy for the entire 30 minutes. What a blessed wonderful experience! I plan to visit often. It's peaceful there, and there are so many beautiful and interesting birds to see and listen to.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 23, 2023
- Andrea CChicago, Illinois1 contributionTop tier!An incredible time. The staff really went above and beyond to ensure my bestie had an incredible birthday. They were attentive and knowledgable. Jay and Jen were excellent at the owl prowl, and our encounter guide was so delightful and funny!! Sorry I'm forgetting her name at this point.Visited December 2023Traveled with friendsWritten December 12, 2023
- earthrevolvingChicago, Illinois7 contributionsWhat A Great Place! My visit to the World Bird Sanctuary was wonderfully educational and exciting. The birds are beautiful and there was information about where they were from and how they arrived there. The staff was incredibly caring and knowledgeable. I signed up for handling a raptor and it was well beyond what I could have expected, an adorable tawny owl named Buzz under the supervision of expert keepers. I also had the magic of watching Buzz and a Harris' Hawk fly right over me during exercise and feeding. Can't recommend this place and their programs enough, for a visit and/or support for our wildlife and birds of prey. They do great things.Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten December 30, 2023
- Gena N2 contributionsWe love the World Bird SanctuaryMy family did the “Hold a Raptor” experience. The five of us each got to hold a tawny owl. I am always so impressed with how well the birds are cared for at the World Bird Sanctuary. It is clear that the birds are their top priority.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 5, 2024
- jpete02Lansing, Michigan985 contributionsLow key rescue that is worth a stopGreat place to take kids or bird lovers. Only costs $12/vehicle and this place won’t leave you tired out like going to the zoo. You get to see about twenty raptors including owls, hawks, and falcons. Each bird on display has a story of how they ended up at the rescue. There are a few birds on display by the gift shop but most are on a paved path past the playground. We also did the raptor experience where for $50, one person gets to hold a raptor for about ten minutes and they talk for about thirty minutes about the animal. Ours was an Eurasian owl, which is the second biggest species. If you do the raptor experience, then the vehicle fee is waived. Located about thirty minutes from downtown St. Louis. If not doing a special experience, would only take about an hour to see everything.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 30, 2024
- Tara L1 contributionFantastic! We went on our 20th anniversary, which also happened to be eclipse day. It was a perfect day to enjoy the birds, bright and clear, and the walk along the "bird street" was so enjoyable! Everything was so clean and well-maintained! We also held an owl (great experience), and the educator/expert was knowledgeable and accommodating. Everyone we encountered was friendly and welcoming. Bonus: we got to watch them "fly" an American eagle! I recommend to everyone who enjoys the outdoors!Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 11, 2024
- AbbyLondon, United Kingdom3 contributionsThe Best Day OutThis place is amazing! We paid for the guided tour (a very reasonable $10 per person) and it was incredible. I cannot overstate how wonderful Sandra is - the perfect guide, so funny and so knowledgeable and you could tell how much she loves volunteering here. She answered every single question we had and was fascinating to listen to. The birds are absolutely fascinating, and we have left with a real love of vultures. As a Brit, getting to see a bald eagle was a huge deal and to see them in such a spacious enclosure was brilliant. Overall, this was one of the best day trips I've ever done, and I could not recommend it to everyone enough. If you're ever in the area, make sure you go!Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten April 18, 2024
- Mary Bliss P4 contributionsWe love World Bird SanctuaryWe love World Bird Sanctuary. They do such wonderful work. When visiting you get to see some amazing birds and learn their story and maybe a little of their personality…such fun. And, we got to see world famous Murphy, Bald Eagle Foster Dad! The highlight of our visit has been the raptor experience. The first time we met (and became a perch for) Quincy, a beautiful Augur Buzzard. On our second visit we were introduced to Forest, the cutest Tawny Owl ever. We also enjoyed the hikes around the property.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 20, 2024
- Lane H1 contributionAmazing trip for a bird enthusiastWent with my wife. It was raining so no one else was there. It made it THAT much more enjoyable! The birds were enjoying the rain and we were able to take our time. Would definitely recommend the trip if you are a bird lover. So many beautiful birds to visit!Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 10, 2024

This is a great place that cares for birds of all sorts - often large ones. We saw owls, eagles, vultures, emus, hawks, cranes. It is about 18 miles west of St. Louis off Hwy 44. They have an asphalt trail that is an out and back - probably 1/2 mile long or so - lots of cages were Eagle Scout projects. They have a small area up front with cages for smaller birds, a playground for kids, and a building (down the hill) with some exhibits. It took us about an hour and a half to see everything. Very well cared for; there are shows if you plan it right. There's a picnic area and a few hiking trails (with hills). Can make it as short or as long as you like.

The location was easy to get to and a lovely place just to walk around. The birds were beautiful and we liked that the signage discussed their individual personalities, not just the traditional information. We paid extra for the Emu Encounter which was really interesting.

The best part was the tour with Thomas. His knowledge and passion for the birds was very inspiring. We went as part of 2 couples. They made sure we were comfortable being together due to Covid-19 and arranged for us to be together during the evening. After that tour, the presentation was well done; so much so that we would all love to experience another “Date Night”. Afterwards, on the way home, we all discussed how amazing the evening was. We only wish it had started a little earlier due to how dark it got toward the end of the tour, making it hard to see the last of the wonderful birds.

We did the bird show and raptor experience this Saturday. Such a fun time! I would recommend arriving a little early and heading into the gift shop to grab a drink and ask for directions. All of the staff were wonderful, especially CJ who did the raptor experience with us. We will definitely be back to continue to support the world bird sanctuary. Booking the 10 AM experience was a great idea to beat the heat as well.

My boyfriend held Diego the owl. It was wonderful for the most part. The guide was super pleasant and knowledgeable. I do wish they had taken the group after us somewhere else until we were done, because it was quite hard to hear our presenter while another guide was getting the next group settled and explaining the process to them. I also think for the cost it could be a little longer. Overall though, a great xperience.

We got to hold Buzz the Tawny owl. She was great! We very much enjoyed the fun facts her handler shared with us, including how successful WBS has been in breeding owls. After we held Buzz we were treated to an outdoor flight demonstration with two other owls.

The animals here are amazing and seem to be well taken care of. My wife did the handle a raptor experience and the staff were amazing. I highly recommend going here and being a picnic to enjoy on the grounds while watching local birds flying around.

If you love birds, this is a nice experience. We saw the WoW show and did the Handle a Raptor experience. The show could have included a few more birds, but as with any show with animals, you work with what you've got. The Handle a Raptor was great. We got up close and personal with an owl. Make sure you do the long walk with the larger birds.

Fantastic visit. Lots of bird species to see. Plus it's entirely outside so a great way to learn about birds, go hiking, and pay a little extra for the Handle a Raptor event. I got to hold a Tawny Owl and talk to the expert about her for half an hour.

I would like to bring a 95 year old who is on a walker to your open house tomorrow. Is your Sanctuary accessible?
