About
History Museum on the Square is located right on historic Route 66 in Springfield, MO. Our six permanent galleries tell the stories of significant events in Springfield and create distinct and intentional dialogues about objects, individuals, and history– dialogues that foster examinations of unique aspects of Springfield, Greene County and its people. A rich and vast collection of artifacts, photographs, and stories of the crossroads are combined using innovative technologies. Take a ride in our Trolley Time Machine, see if you are as good a shot as Wild Bill Hickok in a recreation of the first Wild West Shootout, explore what Springfield was like during the Civil War, and travel down the Mother Road to the place where Route 66 got its name. Walking tours of Springfield, special programs and events are offered throughout the year and can be found on our website. Voted #1 Best New Attraction by the readers of USA TODAY.

We spent over 2 hours in this place. Really well done interactive displays of the area history. A fun pretend shootout where you shoot a play gun. A great Route 66 display. You can tell it was well planned and thought out. Recommend for all ages.

What a wonderful surprise this was! Beautiful, informative displays that took me back to my childhood and teen years! The Route 66 exhibition is fun and so nostalgic! I was simply thrilled with the whole museum. I had been wanting to visit for a long time, but then the pandemic kept everyone in. A beautiful, warm breezy day to explore downtown. Having lived in Springfield since 1949 I spent many hours downtown. Home base was Sothern Studio at 327 E Walnut, my daddy’s place. The museum is a great asset to downtown!

For the size of the space and the overall size of Springfield itself, this is a very nice and well-laid out museum. It has a brief but thorough history of the city’s origins and some of its colorful past.
It’s design is clean, bright, & professional.

I took my kids (3 & 8) and my parents who were visiting to the History Museum on the Square. They all loved it! My 8 year old said, “I love it here!” And when we were leaving he kept saying, “I want to come back again! He loved the trolley and my 8 year old loved the train. My parents read just about everything. It’s really well done and will probably exceed your expectations.

My husband and I just left and are at St Michael’s for lunch. Couldn’t wait to write a review! What a magnificent museum. The attention to detail, the subjects were wide ranging and cleanliness is obviously key. Each exhibit was thoughtfully assembled and the visual media was perfect. If you’ve got youngins, they’ll stay engaged as the length is ideal...short-ish to hold one’s interest yet long enough to give you lots of information.
Lots of time, effort, money and love obviously helped to make this a first class attraction.
As Missourians for the last 25 years, we moved to Springfield just 2 years ago. We knew it pretty well before with trips from our old home in Branson to here but learning all the HISTORY is amazing! I want to learn MORE!! We’ll become sustaining members for sure and will recommend to everyone.

We booked a guided tour and trivia experience for an office team building trip and were blown away by the Museum staff and facilities.

They have done a fantastic job at creating an educational and interactive space that is both visually stunning and easy to navigate. Our favorite floor being the top floor Route 66 portion!

After the guided tour we made our way over to the Fox Theatre and got to experience the amazing Trivia Experience. Though we ended up being a smaller group than expected they did an amazing job keeping it fun and informative!!!

We visited the museum after lunch with our kids (ages 6 and 9). We could have spent hours here if we really took our time and read everything. We moved a little more quickly with the kids. They had neat interactive options throughout the museum, including a video game set up in a train that allows you different ways to survive a trip out west (any other Oregon trail kids like myself will want to play, too!), a time machine trolley, and a Wild West shoot-out target practice! The museum covers Native American history, western American history, and the history of the famous Route 66. Very interesting and fun family activity!
