This is a beautiful and scenic area. It has a nice campground, but not very large. It has a hiking trail that is nice, but there is not much else to do in the park. It is about half way between Farmington and Ste. Genevieve...More

Very well maintained, clean, and attractive park. Friendly hosts and the park manager was helpful on hiking trail questions. Ranger and Hosts maintained periodic drive by presence. Sites had good space between and mostly near full day shade. Sites were paved, had good drainage and...More

Hawn State Park trails provide lots of elevation changes or fairly flat along Pickle Creek. Lots of choices. Not a large campground, and no water attraction other than creek wading. Hidden gem if you enjoy quiet camping

We selected this park after reading reviews on the hiking trails at the park. We hiked the Whispering Pine Trail (red trail) to total 6.57 miles. The temp was 72. The trail is rated as rugged and that is correct in my opinion. We encountered:...More

Yes, there are restrooms near the trail heads as well as picnic tables. There are also restrooms in the campground. The creek is not big enough for swimming. You can get in it, and you need to cross it on some of the... More

Exploring MO State Parks thinking Hawn and Elephant Rock (12 Replies)
We've lived in St. Louis for quite a long time, but have never explored nearby state parks. I'm thinking on doing a mini visit on a September or October weekend to Hawn and Elephant Rock. See planned itinary below. Let me know if this sounds like it would make sense or if you'd have other suggetions. Would Famington be the place that makes the most sense to stay? I welcome other state park suggestions / intinaries too. Note: We're looking for just a mini one night stay somewhere in September...More

We did this very same trip on Memorial Day weekend, then again in July when my teen sons were in town from CA. If you can, make this trip when the leaves are turning - it will be twice as good. In Farmington, we stayed at the Crowne Point Resort and really enjoyed it. I'm sure the Holiday Inn Express will be fine, also. Our favorite place to eat in Farmington is Spokes in the Tradition Inn. The catfish and fried pickles are great (actually everything we've had there in two visits...More
