About
Hawn State Park is one of the loveliest parks in a system full of lovely parks. Clear, sand-bottomed streams, wild areas ripe with orchids and awe-inspiring views combine to make Hawn a place that Missourians treasure. Geology buffs love Pickle Creek for the number of exposed rock types. Hikers frequent the Whispering Pine Wild Area for its quiet trails with expansive views. Bird watchers flock to the park for its variety of birds. And there are plenty of quiet spaces for people to get away and enjoy the outdoors.

They need better maps. Everyone was asking for directions. The Pickle Creek trail was very rocky but scenic. It's had nice picnic spots with grills

Absolutely beautiful state park about an hour and a half south of St. Louis. Trails are not extremely difficult and mostly covered by trees so on an extremely hot day, did not feel overheated. Beautiful views of the area. Close to Ste. Genevieve, which is a great place to eat after a hike.

We spent an amazing weekend at Hawn State Park among the towering pines, falling leaves and challenging trails 11.6-11.8.2020! A quiet but bustling park for sure, especially with the exceptional fall weather! First time with only electric hook-up, but all went great — was still able to take a nightly shower! After 10/31, water spigot to fill tank is at host site #41. Also, after 10/31, dump station will not have water to flush. No cell service and only one radio station came through (93.1) and it was a great classic rock station. We were at site #43 which was the best spot on the campground with a view of the woods and huge yard space. We hiked the Whispering Pines North Loop and Pickle Creek Trails. I highly recommend this park to all — it was a real treat! Great job, Missouri State Parks!

Our family of 7 (mom, dad, and five kids ranging from 14 to 3 years of age) hiked the Pickle Creek Trail. We were dressed in street clothes, jackets, and hoodies, wore street shoes, and did not have any special hiking boots or equipment.

At the trail head there is a nice picnic area and a playground. There are grills at most of the tables. There is a water spigot at the base of the water fountain.

The trail begins with a deceptively flat and level entry at the end of the parking lot and picnic area. Within about 100 yards, though, the flat land turns into a rocky path that extends along the edge of the creek. There are a couple of stretches of flat trail, but much of the path is either rock-strewn or requires the hiker to climb over or around the boulders and rocks. It had rained in the last few days and there were a couple of water-soaked spots on the trail. The rocks themselves were not slippery. The creek was running briskly on the day we went.

This trail requires sure-footedness and a good eye on small kids take safely, as you will be walking on the rocks in many places. If you can do it, though, it is well worth it. It took us about 90 minutes to walk the trail in and back, as we took our time on the way out and hustled back toward the exit when we reached the intersection with the red trail.

It was exhilarating and a little bit fear-provoking at the same time. Even on an overcast and chilly day, the scenery in and around the riverbed was beautiful, even spectacular. There were a couple of spots where our younger children needed to be spotted over the rocks, or scooched down to get off the rocks, but with mom, dad, and two older kids, this was not a problem.

We used the bathroom at the picnic area at the end of the hike; it was reasonably clean, but bear in mind, it is a vault toilet and will smell bad at times. We found the port-a-potty at the park office to be much cleaner and much fresher-smelling.

I will probably wait until my youngest is 5 or 6 before I do this park again, just because I think we will all enjoy it that much more when everyone is a bit older.

We went to Hawn State Park to hike with 2 of our sons and their families, 10 of us in all. It was a nice ride to get there and we decided to hike the Pickle Creek trail. This was the Saturday of Labor Day weekend and the park was full. The hike trail was very nice as you basically hick along the creek. Lots of places to stop if you want to get wet. The picnic area at the parking area was nice with small playground for the smaller kids. Know for the negative part. The restrooms were the nastiest thing I’ve ever been in. The smell was so bad I gaged. Now this was a Saturday morning on the start of the 3 day weekend and the park staff hadn’t done anything to clean the restrooms out. It ruined the entire day for us shame on Missouri parks.

I have bought my travel trailer to Hawk State Park three times now. They have the electrical hook ups that I need. Even in the winter it is enjoyable walking along Pickle creek and talking in the area. During the winter the showers are closed but, for me, that is now a problem.

Nice park, not excellent ranking due to no water available at dump station because it was winter. They have 2 frost free pumps you can get water for your camper, but no water when you dump which is a huge drawback. Also there is not a bath room or bath house open since it is winter. Just pit toilets. The building for the pit toilet was nice and it was clean but it stunk to high heaven! So conserve your water in your camper. No park employees to be seen anywhere. Also the office was not open, bummer since we like to collect stickers or something from where we camp. Also no phone service or TV stations. (We like to watch TV before bed). Also no where in the park to get firewood, there is a great place to get firewood off of 32 close to where you turn into the road for the park.
The camp sites are beautiful and big, I would recommend this for warm weather. The park is small might want to make reservations far in advance for summer.
