Lots of food tastes and a great guide of the downtown restaurants and buildings . This guide new the buildings and their history back to the beginning of St Louis proper. We enjoyed the tour , the guide and the food. Come hungry for sure and wear good walking shoes and plan for the weather. Parking was easy in the pay lots. It is not an arduous walk, you could push a wheelchair but I think a person using a walker would be challenged.

What a fun experience! Great guide, good information about the area, the food was tasty. We especially enjoyed an unexpected stop at Fitz's, a cold bottle of root beer, and a look at the bottling machinery. We also had ribs, St. Louis pizza, swarma, and a crispy cannoli at the end. Loved the stop at the Moonrise Hotel, view from the rooftop was gorgeous!

We met with Shawna at Salt & Smoke on the Delmar Loop at a few minutes after 11 (I had a little difficulty with my GPS). Our group was fairly small, 2 couples, plus me and my two teens. Right away, Shawna was friendly and easy going, explaining how the tour works, and introducing us to the local food scene. We had five stops, that I will detail below, along with the menu item we sampled. All along the way, she pointed out other eateries of note, gave a lot of historical detail about the Loop, and answered questions. She is very knowledgeable, and you could tell she really enjoys her job. My teens (my daughter and her best friend are both 14) had a great time, and said, "Shawna and the food was amazing, the Loop is a definite must-see, and the history was interesting."

Stops:
1. Salt & Smoke -smoked rib, with housemade pickles. This place does it right. The dry rubbed meat was tender and flavorful, but did not mask the flavor of the beef. They have some great sauces (try the mustard sauce, it's divine!) offered on the side.
2. Seoul Taco -bulgogi taco, with kimchi fried rice. The taco was a hit (there is even a pic of my teens stuffing their faces with it on the Savor Saint Louis Food Tour Facebook page). The beef was seasoned and cooked well, and the veggies were crisp. The kimchi fried rice was delicious, but packed some serious heat. I was only able to tolerate a few bites.
3. Shawarma King -chicken and beef shawarma, with hummus. The flavors of the shawarma were good, but I thought it was dry and could've used some more of the dressing. The hummus was fantastic, though, and probably one of the best I've had.
4. Pi -smashed scallion white thin crust pizza, and eggplant parmesan deep dish pizza. I never wouldn't thought scallions alone, rather than as an accent, would make for a tasty pizza, but everyone at the table agreed it was the favorite! The eggplant pizza was also good, but the crust stole the show on that item.
5. Piccione -lemon cannoli. The cannoli shells were fresh, crispy and filled with the smoothest ricotta filling I've ever had. The tangy lemon drizzle was perfect. Lots of great Italian baked treats and gelato.

I am going to try the Soulard tour next time!

I honestly would give this only one star if it weren't for the enthusiasm of the guide. I read the other reviews and I really can't believe I was even on the same tour. I absolutely wouldn't recommend this tour to anyone! (We did the Loop tour.)

If you've seen my other reviews, I tend to stay very positive, but sometimes you just can't.

One positive:
-The guide was very nice, engaging and enthusiastic. She did the best she could under the circumstances.

Negatives:
-The first place we stopped, Salt and Smoke, was a nice place, but I just have to assume they have several good food and drink options. We started with a small (emphasis on small) smoked rib that was tasty and then the owner (nice guy) discussed at length the quality of the brisket they use...USDA prime...better than almost any other bbq place in the US...smoked for 16 hours...award winning...and then we didn't get to try it. Seriously, not a bite. Then we heard about the selection of 200+ whiskeys...one of the best collections anywhere...and we didn't get even a tiny sample of any of them.
-We next went to a Seoul Taco. They specialize in Korean themed small street tacos. We had to wait in line for the person at the register. She had no idea why we were there. After the guide explained it to her, we each got one small street taco. They had several to choose from, but we got to sample one. Now keep in mind, we’ve been at this for nearly an hour, and we’ve had the equivalent of not even an appetizer...and this is a FOOD tour. (Also, unlike Salt and Smoke, no one was there to discuss anything about the food.)
-We then visited a Syrian restaurant. Again, they had no idea who we were or why we were there. They seated us with menus and then came and asked if we were ready to order. We of course were not ordering. The guide had to awkwardly pull the server aside and explain why we were there. We then got half of a falafel ball with some lettuce in a wrap (equivalent to about two bites). On a food tour, you actually selected falafel at a Middle Eastern restaurant…? That’s somewhat akin to getting a Caesar salad sample at a steak place. Why not a dish specific to Syria, or an interesting dish in which the restaurant specializes? (Again, there was no one there to explain to us anything about the food or its history.)
-Next, we visited a place where our sample consisted of one disposable cup of root beer.
-This was followed by a slice of pizza. Not inspired, avant-garde or novel pizza…just decent pizza. Toppings were picked for us. In a city known for its Italian food, the choice of a pizza place seems far from thoughtful or creative.
-We ended the tour at a pastry shop where we did not get to pick our pastry (while standing in front of a huge display case of pastries). We were each given the same cannoli. But wait, before you think…”Hey, a cannoli is a pretty good desert.”…you need to realize this was cannoli shorter than your thumb with a burnt marshmallow on top and an unidentifiable (supposedly sweet potato) filling.

-Finally, although the guide was very nice and tried very hard, she simply could not talk to us informatively about the food because she had not actually eaten any of it. She was a vegan, which I totally support, but it left her ill equipped to discuss the FOOD on a FOOD tour (that wasn't focused on vegan items). Moreover, you can imagine there is a certain degree of discomfort eating meat, cheese and cream in front of a person who’s made the choice to avoid those items in their life.

Bottom line: I would have felt somewhat okay with spending maybe $15/person for this tour, and even that would be on the high end. At essentially $50/person, this was a total disappointment. This felt like someone gave it about 20 minutes of thought and said let’s make this into a business. Biggest suggestion for the owners…go back and remind yourself that this is advertised as a food tour. Food should be the focus, there should be enough food and I should know more about food when I’m done with the tour.

Dear Dave: Thank you for your response. As a small, growing business, we rely heavily on our online reviews to help us grow. I am sure you can imagine that, when we read your review, we were absolutely devastated. I am a co-owner of Savor Saint Louis Food Tours and my mother is my partner. We pride ourselves in our love for family, food and St. Louis and make it our goal to deliver the best of St. Louis that our family can offer through the food tours. Apparently, we have fallen short, and for that, we are saddened. We have had the privilege of growing our business in the past few years which has required us to guide less of our tours personally. Sadly, this has resulted in a sub-par tour for you. My partner and I want to make this good, for you and your guest. We promise, our food tour is a five star experience and I want you to have that. Others definitely think so and I am confident that we can deliver a five star level of satisfaction and we want to make it up to you. Please allow us to do so. We have another tour of the Central West End that we can offer to you and your guest and I will serve as your guide. I can ensure the tour is delivered in the manner we intended it to when we started our tours in 2014. We want to change your mind about your rating and ask that you allow us the opportunity. Please respond to let us know what we can do. We are good-hearted, family-oriented people who take our guest feedback to heart. We want to make this right for you – please allow us to do so. Sincerely, Jennifer & Susie Jennifer & Susie Chief Tasting Officers Savor Saint Louis Food Tours 314-374-5673

Three of us went on a Food Tour of THE DELMAR LOOP in University City, Missouri last Friday, October 13, 2017..It was a history lesson and 5 food experiences. Our tour guide, Shawna, was SO informative and did a GREAT job of telling us the History of the area and taking VERY good care of us at our 5 food stops....Barbeque, Korean, Mediterranean, Italian, and Italian Bakery .....All three of us would HIGHLY recommend taking this 3 hour tour. It was a VERY worthwhile experience and an Epicurean delight!!

Since St. Louis is a major food city, I dee also gave me great tips of restaurants decided to take a food tour of the Loop. Since I was staying downtown this was a great way to explore this really cool hood (voted 1 of America's top 10 streets), while really get an idea of the eclectic flavors of the city. Shawna the tour guide was very knowledgeable and patient (even let the tour go over 1/2 hour so we could catch the city view from the moon hotel). She. also gave me great suggestions for restaurants downtown. The stops on tour were very eclectic (from BBQ to falafal), and very filling..NOTE: Make sure to have very light breakfast and plan on having a late dinner because this tour will fill you up!

My wife and I just completed this tour just last weekend. We did it on a spur of the moment trip to St. Louis.

Four couples were led on the tour by Anna a very personable and capable guide. I got the sense she really enjoyed what she was doing and that was indicated by her enthusiasm. We were also fortunate to have spectacular weather for early April.

A three hour walk with stops for food, but it was not as strenuous as that might sound as there are plenty of stops to discuss historical significance of the boyhood home of Tennessee Williams, discussion of other literary artists, the evolution of the gaslight district, the mansions of the rich industrialists and business men. Imagine a street of massive brick homes, restored and kept in pristine condition. It is very impressive.

At each of the five locations, food was waiting for us. A unique pork sandwich at a Dressel’s gastropub, an absolutely delicious open faced sandwich at Café Osage tucked into a gorgeous greenhouse/nursery/gift shop, St. Louis pizza at PI, a delicious seafood and vegetable risotto at Bar Italia, and an extraordinary sweet concoction from The Cup to finish the walk.

At $46 per person we felt this was an good value. Good food, fresh air, history lesson and good company.

If you get a chance, take this tour!

We had an awesome tour with Beverly! She was very knowledgeable about the area, the restaurants and the food!. We loved the architectural history and side trips into buildings that she included in the tour. The food was fantastic and the vegetarian options provided at each stop were delicious. It was a varied menu ending with delicious Gooey Butter Cake! I liked that Savor SL recommended parking options for the tour and that at the start of the tour Beverly checked that we had all found good places to park. We would highly recommend this tour with Beverly!

We were in town to look at Washington University with our son. This tour was the perfect compliment to our college visit as it showed him all the great food and entertainment options within walking distance of campus. Shawna was a wonderful guide! This tour was a fun way to learn about the history of St. Louis and taste yummy food!!
