Waitomo/Piopio film location for "The Hobbit - An Unexpected...

Waitomo/Piopio film location for "The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey". Come and see why this stunning farm location in the Mangaotaki Valley near Piopio was chosen by Sir Peter Jackson and why it received more screen time than any other location in New Zealand. Several pivotal scenes were filmed in this one location all based around the troll camp fire scenes. Stand in the actors' footsteps, have your photograph taken with 'Sting', hear all about the film making process and enjoy being on a beautiful New Zealand working farm. Journey along the base of our towering limestone cliffs and experience the unusual rock formations, all nestled amongst real New Zealand bush (forest). Spend 90 minutes in a different time as this special place transports you back to a primeval era. Daily minivan tours take you on a journey through unusual rock formations to spectacular limestone cliffs and primeval native New Zealand forest. An enjoyable tour for more than just Tolkien fans.

Went for the tour with Suzie. She was absolutely fantastic with her knowledge on both the LOTR filming and even on her knowledge on geography/agrilculture. She was very warm and ensured that all our questions were answered. Although this is fairly out of the way, it is definitely a must do in the north island.

This event was for me my absolute highlight during my new Zealand trip. I was stunning from the environment around this location of the Lord of the rings movie set. We got some time before we started to our adventure therefore we got some nice swords and huts from gandalf and the others companions and we were be able to... More

For someone who has never seen the hobbits or lord of the rings this stop on our adventure was awesome. The most amazing views. Our guide Susie (owner of the property) exudes so much pride in her farm you smile all the way through the tour. Some of the prettiest and unbelievable sights. A must see

All those reviews about how amazing this tour is, are not exaggerating. The natural beauty is breathtaking. And for Hobbit fans, Suzie made this such a fun adventure. Her enthusiasm is so honest and contagious. A must see tour! My daughter (26) and I (62) loved it!

I am a massive LOTR and Hobbit fan and have been wanting to do this since it opened. Having finally had to chance to do it. I was blown away with how incredible this tour is. I have done many LOTR and hobbit tours over my time and this one is the best one yet. We were very lucky to... More

My boyfriend is a massive Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit fan however i've never been as much of a fan. After today's tour, with all of Susie's amazing expertise and knowledge, I am much more interested in the movies. The booking process was easy, we booked 2 days before we went on the tour and had no problems... More

Suzie was extremely enthusiastic and well worth the 2 1/2 hour trip from Rotarua after visiting Waitomo Gloworm Caves first. By using actual photos from the making of the movie she brought back to life the making of The Hobbit

...well not literally, because Susan and Warrick will take care of you, but the scenery is definietly awestruck. Honestly i wasn't soo excited when we headed to this filming location, because I am not as a big fan of the Hobbit movies like The Lords of the Rings . But as soon as We arrived and get off the couch... More

We were unsure of what the tour would be like, but wanted a chance to see more filming locations (after all, what did we come all the way to New Zealand for?), so we chose to do the morning tour before our Waitomo caves afternoon tour, since it was relatively close. We couldn't have been more satisfied with our Hairy... More

I recently booked a Hairy Feet Tour based on previous reviews. When I turned up for my pre-booked tour I found I was the only person who had booked for that timeslot. Unlike some other tours where there is a minimum of 2 people Susie gave me a private tour of her beautiful and unique property! This is a far... More
