Saint Mary's of the Barrens Historic District was founded in 1818; the church was started in 1827. The Shrine was built in 1929 to honor our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. The church is modeled after the Vincentian Motherhouse chapel in Rome, Monte Citorio. The church is decorated with paintings and has intricate design work on the walls and ceilings. It is a national center for Marian devotion.

I grew up in this area. Never truly realized the historical element of this place. The artwork is stunning. It's worth a stop.

We arrived around 9am and were given a comprehensive tour by Laurie, who had previously spoken to my wife. Laurie was very knowledgable about the history and goings on of the Mission. It was very well kept up and has a lot of history.

We were taken on a personal tour of the shrine by a member of the staff at no charge at all. The tour lasted about 1 hour and was very informative.

The inside of this church is just amazing. The details, the sound. One of my favorite times of year to visit here is during Christmas. A walk through the grounds during the spring and fall will really center you, and bring you calm.

I live just outside of town and go to the shrine often. There's a lovely walk through the gardens and places to kneel or sit down by the shrine in the grotto. I love to sit there and pray or just meditate and usually take a brisk walk on the concrete path. Before I leave, I stop in to the... More

I visited this shrine recently with a group of friends as part of a "ladies day out" and was not disappointed. Though no longer a parish church, Mass is still said every day of the week. Our tour guide, Frank, was both knowledgeable and passionate about the shrine -- its history, the artifacts, the paintings and the national association. The... More

We attended Mass in this gorgeous little church recently. Afterwards we walked the grounds and visited the gift shop. Definitely worth the stop if you are nearby. The church is open for self guided or guided tours and it is just beautiful!

Everyone needs to experience the peacefulness and calm here. Enjoy mass during the week at 8 am or Sunday at 11 am. Talk a walk to the grotto, which is amazing!!

This was my first time there. The guided tour of the church was very informative. The Shrine is beautiful. You do feel a sense of peace and comfort as you move around the church and grounds. The people are very friendly and are willing to answer any and all questions. The gift shop / visitor center is great. The prices... More
