About
Saint Mary's of the Barrens Historic District was founded in 1818; the church was started in 1827. The Shrine was built in 1929 to honor our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. The church is modeled after the Vincentian Motherhouse chapel in Rome, Monte Citorio. The church is decorated with paintings and has intricate design work on the walls and ceilings. It is a national center for Marian devotion.

Traveling with my daughter in the Bike Across Missouri, we stopped to visit. I was a place of beauty and peace despite having many visitors. The staff gave an informative presentation of the Shrine and of the grounds accompanying the chapel. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed our visit following the guide and paying attention to details about the shrine. Though we were exhausted from riding our bikes during the day, we found new energy while visiting. It was a peaceful experience and a place to offer gratitude and thanksgiving for our friends and family along with our experience of riding with so many wonderful people on our bike across the state. Definitely worth the trip. We were there for about 2 hours and could have spent more time!

This is something that I will remember for a long, long time. There is so much to take in. The artwork, the landscaping, the chapel is overwhelming.

Surprising gem. Docent who gave the tour of the church was quite knowledgeable and kind with her time. The Rosary pathway was affecting but could use more trees especially around the grotto. Much recommended for those looking for a spiritual kick.

We enjoyed our visit today. The outdoor rosary walk is amazing. Many statues and grottos along the way. The church has many beautiful paintings. There is a definite sense that God is present here. We enjoyed our prayer time. To Jesus through Mary!

This is a beautiful place to walk through. The grounds are landscaped beautifully, and the grotto and statues are so nice!
Lots of places available to sit and rest, reflect, and pray.
The church is amazing inside! Very ornate, with beautiful paintings everywhere .
The gift shop has alot of nice things to offer, more than you would expect from a small place.
Doesn't disappoint! Go see!

Locals know about this basilica, once used as a parish church, and now a place for special occasions and for devotional times. The basilica has 9 chapels, dedicated to various saints venerated by the French Catholics. The ceiling art is awesome. Come on a sunny day to really enjoy the rose window and other stained glass windows. But what made our visit exceptional was strolling on the renovated rosary walk. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and fully accessible. There are 2 shrines, the main grotto and a statuary park. That is, the 2D cardboard cutouts will all be replaced eventually by real statues. We enjoyed the motion detector-genenerated music by the choir. This can be enjoyed in all seasons.
