About
Saint Mary's of the Barrens Historic District was founded in 1818; the church was started in 1827. The Shrine was built in 1929 to honor our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. The church is modeled after the Vincentian Motherhouse chapel in Rome, Monte Citorio. The church is decorated with paintings and has intricate design work on the walls and ceilings. It is a national center for Marian devotion.

This is a beautiful place to walk through. The grounds are landscaped beautifully, and the grotto and statues are so nice!
Lots of places available to sit and rest, reflect, and pray.
The church is amazing inside! Very ornate, with beautiful paintings everywhere .
The gift shop has alot of nice things to offer, more than you would expect from a small place.
Doesn't disappoint! Go see!

We recommend scheduling a tour. It’s a fabulous place to experience peace and prayer. Hopefully you’ll gain knowledge of the Catholic faith. We wondered why everyone isn’t Catholic after visiting. Amazing for the soul.

First of all, get the guided tour!
The church is rich in history, how the church was built, how the missionaries sculpted the Catholic landscape and the beautiful paintings and stained glass of the church. The altar honoring the Blessed Mother is equally beautiful, and the architecture inside is marvelous.
If you are in this side of town, you should come visit.

We arrived around 9am and were given a comprehensive tour by Laurie, who had previously spoken to my wife. Laurie was very knowledgable about the history and goings on of the Mission.
It was very well kept up and has a lot of history.

This shrine is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. The grounds were just beautiful at this time of year with all of the fall foliage. The church is equally beautiful and Frank, our guide was very knowledgeable and informative, giving us background history and explaining the history of the Vincentians. The guided tour of the church is well worth your time. Be sure to visit the grotto and cemetery. The priest who gave John F. Kennedy last rites is buried in the cemetery. Also, don't miss the gift shop where there are some lovely items for purchase.

This is one of those special secret places that is a must see for any Catholic. Located in a small town south of St. Louis this church and grounds is the perfect place to pray, reflect and be spiritually moved. The staff is very helpful and happy to provide you a tour. I recommend calling ahead to have a tour guide show you the many details of each painting and the church. There is also a quiet grotto back in the woods but it is a decent walk from the parking. Bring a camera and explore your faith. Enjoy

I grew up in this area. Never truly realized the historical element of this place. The artwork is stunning. It's worth a stop.
