This lock is the point where the historic Chesterfield Canal meets with the tidal River Trent and it is the point that any vessels wishing to use The Chesterfield Canal must come to to gain access.
The lock area is beautifully kept by Canal & River Trust, the grass is kept mown and the old buildings look lovely too. Visitors should bear in mind this is an operating lock and so there will be areas that at not accessible to the public.
If you are fortunate enough to be there at the right time then you may see a boat either leaving or entering the lock. Both are fascinating to watch. There is only quite a small window in the times of the tide that boats can use the lock and, if you look down into the mouth of the lock on the river at low tide you will see the silt and mud in the entrance that makes it impassable at other times in the tide range.
It is a lovely place to go for a stroll along the river bank and, if you need refreshments there are a couple of pubs nearby. Just remember to treat the edges of the water with caution, especially if you have young children or dogs with you

We spent another very pleasant evening in West Stockwith Basin on our boat at the weekend and had the pleasure of watching a boat lock out onto the river on Sunday morning. Always fascinating to watch if you are fortunate enough to be there at the right tide time.

Great service from a knowledgable Lock keeper. As always the wind and current provided a challenge but planning and careful captaincy ensured success!

Absolutely love this place, when the sun is shining it's lovely taking a walk along the canal bank looking at all the boats and then calling off for a drink at The Waterfront Inn.

Nice little walk along the canal in good weather. Perfect if you want a walk but don’t want to go miles! Enjoyable!

We only stopped by briefly by boat this time, on a bitterly cold December day but I was able to take note of the magnificent range of very old warehouse and other buildings that surround the lock and find the heritage of this important port very interesting

Took some friends here to show them the lock etc because we used to moor our boat here until we moved it's a very tricky lock to enter off the Trent which is tidal and leads you onto theChesterfield canal the clubhouse is well worth a visit and there is a pub opposite the basin which serves food also good walks up the towpath and along the Trent
