    A 'Must do' experience
Our trip to Gia did not disappoint: this was an exceptional experience. Safaris are in jeeps of 4, 6 or 8 and each jeep has a Guide/Naturalist and a driver. We had 7 drives 4 early morning and 3 late afternoon. We would recommend that you get there early (5.20am) to get your jeep and guide organised. We would recommend that this is pre booked well in advance: we had booked about 11 months ahead. It can take a while for the staff and route to be allocated as there are a number of guides and routes to be coordinated which takes time and you need to be ready as the gates open at 6am Within minutes of our first game drive we spotted a male lion walking down the road, we were so excited to see one so soon! At the end of the drive we spotted a leopard very clearly sneaking through the undergrowth!! Our luck with lions continued over each of the 7 drives with clear sightings of a number. Our leopard sightings were low but these are incredibly elusive and therefore difficult to spot so we were more than excited with our one clear sighting. There is usually one stop on the 3 hour drive where there are toilets for men and woman. These are normally clean and western style. Gir is not only about the lions and leopards although these are clearly the biggest draw. There were lots of deer, fabulous and colourful birds (the 3 species of Owls a firm favourite) and a range of other mammals. We were lucky to see the 2 types of mongoose, grey and ruddy, Indian hare and wild boar. A trip to Gir is about seeing nature at its best but nothing is guaranteed. It is important to remember that on the whole any sightings are by chance rather than by managing the drive. We were incredibly lucky!

    Exceptional experience
Sasan Gir National park and safari is out of the world experience. If you are lucky you can see plenty of Lions and other animals. Few suggestions for tourist, kindly do booking of safari and permit at least one week in advance. Wear full sleeves clothes and full mask and cover head. This is to save from dust in jungle. Have good camera and avoid making noise and just listen to guide along with jeep. Early morning safari is best to sight the wildlife.

    Devaliya Park (Gir Interpretation Zone)
I went to the Devaliya Park (Gir Interpretation zone). Key features 1. It has bus safari which costs 250 per person. Quite economical 2. It is of shorter duration. The regular safari last 3 hrs but this one is of 45 minutes 3. It’s almost certain to see the lions in the journey. 4. One can also spot multiple leopards and tigers in enclosure 5. Devalia park also has a garden for kids and an amazing souvenir shop with good quality tshirts and caps.

    It's pretty crowded
April is extremely hot, but safaris are in high season and offer many opportunities to see animals. That's why it was quite crowded. Unlike tigers, lions tend to stay still, so it's easy to encounter them, but it's still hard to find them. I think this is where the real fun of safaris lies.

    A majestic jungle
This is a must-visit destination. The park is full of a variety of animals. We got to see, Lions (twice in our 2 safaris), Wild Boars, Monkeys, hundreds of Peacocks and peahens, a Paradise Flycatcher, Pond Heron, Turtles, Hare, Painted Stork, Crane, Neelgai, thousands of spotted deer (Chital), Sambhar deers and some more. The park is regularly patrolled. The guides are well-informed and the drivers are quite disciplined. You aren't allowed to carry any food inside the park. There are toilets inside the park. The souvenir shop is near the main office outside the park. We loved it through and through and would love to return someday. The Gypsy can pick you up directly from the hotel if you inform them in advance. The safari route and the guide will still be assigned at the main office. We were assigned a route during our first evening safari which also took us to the Kamaleshwar dam. We sighted 2 lions and a lioness the next day during our morning safari.

    SASAN GIR ONLINE BOOKING
Sasan Gir Beware of private website 974499225 There are many agent's private website doing the booking, the rate is much higher than official website. though service is ok, but rate difference is significant. Sighting of lion is a matter of luck. Chances of lion sighting is more in devalia park.

    A great adventurous safari
A great place to go for safari. You have to be lucky or careful to spot the lion. It is recommended to take the earliest time slot for safari. The lake and dam within are beautiful. Had a great time with kids.

Beautiful jungle and great wildlife density, experience is restricted due to management
I will first focus on the positives, the jungle is filled with life even if you don’t see a lion. It was nice to see so many deer, nilgai, langurs, and birds. We went on five safaris and had great sightings on three of the five. The fourth safari we had a fleeting glimpse of a lion and the final fifth safari we had no lions. I only mention this since you are restricted to a very specific one way route for your safari and must exit by a specific time. So if you have an amazing encounter early on, you cannot sit and enjoy it longer since the drivers/guides will feel pressure to make it through the entire route and exit on time. Also routes and guides are assigned at random therefore you do not have input there. If you are planning to visit I would highly recommend at least three safaris to have the best chances for some nice sightings. In regards to the great sightings, we had a mom with two 1.5 month old cubs, two male lions waking up and roaring for their early morning patrol to name a few. Also I will mention if you are going during a busy holiday time, be prepared to wait in three separate lines which can be chaotic and confusing at times. I think if you want to avoid the lines you need to book the safaris through a hotel, but then you are paying a premium.

    Good experience but Luck dependent
We loved the Safari experience. First, the logistics. We booked 2 Safaris 3:30 pm and 6:30 am. Routes and guides and vehicles are assigned randomly. I don’t know if there is any way you can influence the route. We had opted for the 8 seater vehicle. The vehicles were great. We were assigned different routes each time. Route 8 for the afternoon one and Route 11 for the morning one. Luckily both routes explore different aspects of the forest. On both safaris we saw animals like deer, peacocks, throughout the route. We encountered lions towards the end of the safari. We were very lucky in both cases. I take away one star for the very reason that your lion sightings are very luck dependent. The guides/drivers can’t deviate away from the route so even if some other route has lions if you are not on that route you won’t see them. We came across people who had same route as us and didn’t see lions after doing the safari for 2 times. The drove through the forest is nice. Be sure to prepare for cold weather especially for the morning safaris.

There are three safaris per day. We decide on the earliest and will be at registration shortly before 6am. This, typical of India, takes place in an “orderly chaos”. After signing the permit that you have to pre-order, you take the jeep to the checkpoint where the permit is checked with the passports.
Shortly after sunrise we see the first deer, right next to the road. During the tour we see more deer in packs, antelopes and a male and a female lion, as well as various birds.
The tour takes about three hours and is interrupted by a toilet stop. We really liked the safari. In this vast national park, which covers over a million square kilometres, there are currently over 660 registered Asian lions, and the trend has been rising for years and there are also very high numbers of deer and antelopes. As usual, the permit is very expensive for foreign tourists. The three-hour journey costs about €100, if you carry a camera, you have to add another €20. However, taking pictures with your mobile phone is free and is also completely sufficient.

This morning at dawn, after completing the necessary bureaucratic formalities, we entered this park with a driver and guide. The temperature was very low but the hotel provided us with blankets to protect us from the cold. In the park the fauna is varied, with birds, fallow deer and deer. We also managed to see two groups of lions. The impression is that the lions are positioned in points known to the rangers who head towards their location without fail.

We always wanted to go to a Lion Safari and we chose the abode of the Asiatic Lions, The Sasan Gir National Park,

Some facts about the National Park is that it is situated in 1200 square miles of area and it has about 674 lions in all in this area and lakhs of other animals like different type of Deers, Leapords, Jackals, monkeys and the regular flora and fauna of the jungle,

This is basically a Lion jungle and offers perfect Camouflage to lions.

The Safari experience here is also very good and inexpensive, some facts and points to note and tips as below to sight amazing lions.

1) The safari consists of an open gypsy which sits 6 people plus the driver and the guide, the gypsy, guide and the Camera that you carry with you are chargeable, and no plastic bottles allowed, they give you steel bottles with purified water at a nominal charge.

2) Timings of the Safari - The main Sasan Gir Safari has to be booked online at the Gir Lion website, it's best to book this in advance for your dates, as only 50 Gypsy Safari slots are available, Gypsy and Guide charges are seperate.

3) there are two types of safaris, choose the 3 hour Proper Sasan Gir Lion Safari as it's a pure safari in the jungle in the open keep, where as the others like Devaliya is like a controlled environment safari for an hour in a caged jeep.

4) best time for sporting a Lion is in the morning hours or in the evening hours, best is to take the wake morning safari slot of 06:45 to 09:45 and the second best is the evening one post 16:00.

5) if coming in the winters the temperature is really chilly in the first hour and you will freeze If your are not wearing a jacket and some head gear.

6) the safari is safe as the animals here have got used to humans and you can enjoy them from an open gypsy.

7) the guides and drivers are very hospitable.

8) we did two early morning safaris and we were able to spot 7 lions on day one, and 1 Lion on day 2 ( for day one we were alloted route 6, and for day two it was route 2) the routes are allotted to the gypsys on a rotation basis.

9) while at the Safari please do wear regular clothes which are not overtly colourful, don't attract attention and are well mixed in the surrounding, like beige, khakhi, green, ect.

10) when you do spot a Lion or a predator, enjoy the sights by not making noises or distract the animals, they might be hunting or eating their meals.

11) do carry a DLSR or Digital cameras with more than 55-255 mm zoom lenses as the wildlife is always some distance away from you and even the best phones of today don't take full clarity pictures on full Zoom.

12) it's safe to bring in kids on the safari.

It is worth visiting. Time of visit should be either early in the morning or in the evening safari. Safaris are booked online and kindly carry Rs 2400/- in cash to pay for the Jeep and the Guide. Once the guide is allotted, discuss with hi the probability of siting the lion or lioness and get the route changed if possible in case same route is not allotted. Carry a good camera or a smart phone with good camera with good zoom to record videos or take photographs of animals, which are normally sort of hidden or at distance. Water bottle must be carried as trip is of roughly three hours w/o any support. Best season is after the winters when land and trees, bushes starts becoming brown and leafless. Sighting of animals will be easy at distances.

Disappointing because of the high camera fees and no deference given to us serious photographers. Generally it is the actual forest trackers who locate the lions and you are held in a queue waiting your turn to drive past. You barely get 2-3 minutes of photography. It is like a mad house at times. The forest people are very rude and don't seem to realise that we are helping to pay their wages. Enjoyable in that we did see the lions and some other wild animals, but it was somewhat like a zoo when it came to viewing the lions. Never to be repeated for us true wildlifers

We took the 6am morning jeep safari for Gir national park. In case you wish to take this, you have to book online in advance only through Gujrat Government website (there are many private operators charging much more). There is a lot of rush so please book well in advance. For us it was a little disappointing as we did not spot any lions which happens 95% of times. So I did not find it value for money.

If you are someone who is ok with not seeing any major animals and just taking a jeep safari, then only go for this. But I feel this one is over hyped.
Instead I would strongly recommend to go for Devalia safari which is much cheaper and where you are definitely going to see lions. This will be worth your time and money.

Well maintained national park , 3hrs safari is bit too long when we were not so lucky to see any lion. 3500++ is two much for three adults per trip, I think they organize 3 days safari (1 hr each) and take different route every day , this will give better experience and also helps to promote tourism in an around this area. I also felt that there are insiders who keep track of lions movement and they will take you to those places if we offer extra money , however no one approached us so I cant officially comment on this.

I just visited gir jungle trail on 14th January 2021 with my family... And this time i was so lucky we Spotted 5 lioness together, deers, crocodile.. We booked safari from our hotel. And they charged 5000/- with pickup and drop, gypsy, guide but it was too costly so i highly recommend never book safari from any particular hotel or resort because they take heavy charges.. Originally its cost 2900/- and if you want pickup drop service then you have to pay Rs. 500/- extra.. We got route number 6 and our timimg was 3pm to 6pm...there is no law that you r doing morning safari and spot lion its completely depends on luck.. But must be try to take early morning safari or last safari.. As per my experience..

We visited Gir national park in the 1st week of January for a 3nights stay. Did 5 open jeep safaris and had an wonderful experience to share.

The trip actually happened by chance! We initially planned to visit tadoba which was due for a long time.. But by the time we decided and gathered all resources to book, I guess we were a couple of days late as all the options was full in terms of safari.

Disappointed we were thinking of options and was closing in for a hill station near goa, when my wife chanced upon Gir as an option.

I had seen tigers before in other national parks but lions and that to asiatic lion immediately exited me and at once started looking for options.

Again I felt I must have missed out on safari bookings as this is heavy tourist time but to my surprise there was availability.

I believe owing to covid 19 and restriction of foreign nationals must be the reason behind this availability.

We at once booked all safaris, resort to stay and travel to avoid any mishaps that may happen.

With lots of expectations and fully geared up (it was extremely cold in the morning)  we went for our 1st safari. At the entrance gate when our guide stopped to show our permits, we heard the roar of a lion at a close distance.. It's was really exciting and we knew that the next 3 days is going to be lot of fun..

During the 5 safaris (gate no 10, 6,7, 12 & 4) we did get to see 8 set of lions (16 individual in total) 2 leopards, crocodile, jackals, nilguys, wild boars, countless deers both spotted and Sambar deer, number of birds including 2 different types of owls and hawks. I mean we couldn't have asked for anyone more.

Lioness sitting at a distance of 10m with its mate a bit far away with a half eaten Buffalo is the highlight of this trip..

We wished to see the very very elusive stripped hyena but I guess it's ok, you can't get everything that you want.

Overall I feel it's a complete trip with lots of memories to charish for a long long time.

We booked safaris online for two consecutive days to optimise chances of sightings and we were not disappointed. On day one we sighted an old male, a young male and female at close quarters. We wondered whether the second day would be worth it and it was. A lioness treated us to a close sighting with her 3 delightful cubs. A solitary, regal male with a grand golden mane stared at us for as long as we stared at him and two young males slept soundly without stirring whilst gypsy vehicles idled by the side. If you do 2 days like we did, show day one permit and request for another zone for the next day. All gypsies are GPS tracked and can't go off in any direction they choose.
