Visiting the Liberty Jail always helps me put my own hardships and difficulties into perspective. The men who were jailed there in the winter of 1838-1839 are an inspiration to me of cheerfully doing all in my power and relying on God to make up the rest. Wonderful tour and beautiful preservation.

This has been a go to place to go whenever we have friends from out of town come for a visit. Very interesting tour and movie presentation. My wife and I have been here about 10 times and is still interesting.

We had a nice visit to Liberty Jail. The missionaries there know a lot and explained about the history and what happened here. They are so great to talk to and ask questions.

Awesome History and Tour

This is an important piece of LDS History and a must stop for anyone interested in history, especially LDS history. The LDS Church has restored the jail and they provide guided tours and discuss the events that happened there. We love to take the tours during the off seasons (not summer) with our children and we got what we hoped for - a personalized long tour of the jail and stories of the earlier pioneers and Saints. .Of course its all FREE.

I learned so much about the Mormon's struggle for Zion. It was interesting to know of the persecution of the Mormon so early in their history.

Informative Historical Site!

Interesting and Informative Historical site owned and operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The tour takes less than an hour as you learn of Joseph Smith's difficult 5 month incarceration in the Liberty Jail. The jail itself has been recreated on the original site and foundation of the jail that had previously been destroyed. The site has significance for church members. Interesting!

Learning is always fun. This place will add to your knowledge bank. It’s a reconstruction. Wish it was original but there was probably nothing left to present it that way.

Shrine to Joseph Smith
Oct 2018 • Friends
The name "Liberty Jail Historic Site" may evoke scenes of some wild west jailhouse once on the outskirts of America's westward expansion. But in truth, this site is a shrine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (formerly known as Mormons). It is a reproduction of an old Jackson County, MO wooden jail building in which "prophet, seer and revelatory" Joseph Smith was incarcerated. It is set down in what looks like a circus ring, and is surrounded by sayings of the prophet carved into the alabaster stone around the domed amphitheater. The facility is staffed by volunteers of the church formerly known as the LDS. If you are intending to visit an old wild west jailhouse, you may want to go further west to like Dodge City. If you want to see a hollywood like production glorifying Joseph Smith, replete with "voice of god" soundtrack with animation and lighting effects, THIS IS YOUR PLACE!

I have been to several historical sites for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Liberty Jail will not disappoint- two missionaries gave us an insightful and interesting tour thru the building to see the photos and a reproduction of the jailhouse itself. Please be prepared that the jail is a reproduction since the original was dismantled many years ago.
What a tribute to Joseph Smith and and his supporters, and his faith and courage to persevere for so long while incarcerated in such grim circumstances. Our life of ease is built upon the sacrifice of these great men and women!
