Pristine clear water river with pleasant natural pools for a refreshing splash after hiking the nearby locations. Short, bumpy rally-like drive on the local 4x4. Hold on tight!

There are 8 tours run by the La Macarena co-op: Caño Cristales, Mirador, Cristalitos, Caño Piedra, Laguna del Silence, Cachivera, Bocas del Losada and Raudal Angosturas. We went to Caño Piedra as a prelude to the tour to Caño Cristales slated for the next day. The destination of this tour was a swimming hole in the shaded trees with some colors in the nearby water to be seen. It turned out the starred attraction for this tour was the prairie on the way in/out by jeep. It reminded us of the African savannah - quite the unexpected pretty vistas. In the dusk locals flew hawk-like kites on top of the hills, a very idyllic scene.

This is the best option right after or before visiting Caño Cristales river because it’s near La Macarena town (half an hour by car), it’s free and it’s very fast and easy to get there (no guides needed either). You arrive to this little farm where you can get delicious lunch or breakfast and after just a 5-minute walk, you get to see this lovely place that looks like taken out of a fairy tale: pristine water that lets you see every stone, fish or plant below, some greenish color in the water and absolute peace and fresh air. If you walk a little down the river, you get to see the same plants and the same amazing views as in caño cristales, just in a smaller version, and is not as crowded or as exhausting. There’s no trekking or any walking paths, just this gorgeous mini river sorrounded by some trees.

Caño Piedra should not be missed. What a delightful day! Just a short walk to the best swimming hole ever! Doña Rosa was the best hostess. Food and hammocks for her guests!

This was one of my other tour stops in the the La Macarena area after my tour of Caño Cristales in 2016. After a nice motorcycle ride through a prairie, you come to this river with a natural pool amongst some trees. Truly beautiful and unforgettable. Make sure you add this to the list of places to see when you go to this area. You wont regret it.

Great place to take a swim in the crystal clear waters. It gets extremely busy on Wednesday as this is the locals weekend. It's a 30 minute drive from La Macarena.
