The beaches of Puerto Colombia have nothing special, except that they are very popular with locals. Some places on the beach are dirty with garbage and water sewage coming from the town. Dark, blackish sand, murky water on a windy coast.
Many men will approach you, trying to invite you to their restaurant...

I've never been so disapponted about a place I visited. I am colombian and I would never recommend to go to this place. Restaurant's personal are simply looking for normal tourist to offer them cheap dishes for luxus prices! The bill was just horrible and did not deserve to be paid. The salad was just tomato and onion with a bad Sauce, a normal robalo fish and an a portion coconut rice cooked two days ago. Nothing that deserve a good comment. I would not be angry about the quality if the price were ok. I had to pay 102.000 per person ($30)

I have been surfing twice in the last 3 days at Pradomar, once with a local. The water was filthy and from the wind and waves direction I would not be surprised that we are surfing in (poorly if at all) waste water from Barranquilla, 13km north and the 4 th largest city in Colombia. It was so bad that did ended up having my tongue all thingy from inevitable contact with it. Went a second time with a local who insisted it was only brown because of the windy conditions and the sand being churned up.....i could smell sewer now and then and after 1 hour had to throw up between rocks of the pier. Unbelievable ....the beaches all down from there including Puerto Colombia are extremely dirty with litter....there is a small stream going into the sea by the super long/half destroyed pier called the Muelle that the water is PINK ....what is in it I do not know. On a more positive note the Carnival here starts in January and very colourful . First 2 days I was at Hotel Puerto Colombia right in the center super loud music..loud enough for the windows of my second floor room to vibrate till 3am. Moved 600 m. From center to a nice and friendly hostel with a small shady garden and dipping pool the Kasamar.

I live near here and so I am well aware of the various changes that are happening to this area. Some of them are positive, the new beach road, the new restaurants and food stalls opening up.
However, it is very depressing to say that the rubbish and pollution here is getting worse and worse. Local tourists come from Barranquilla and leave vast amounts of rubbish on the beach, used nappies, empty rum bottles, broken beer bottles; they will drop it all and leave it.
The locals from Puerto are also to blame for the crazy amount of trash that is dumped in the streams leading to the beach, this makes for a disgusting sight and smell.
To add to these problems the police are now patrolling the beach....asking for money! The corrupt police have started asking tourists for money because they ´haven’t eaten´. This is a rather sad but not totally unexpected from one of the most corrupt police forces in the world.
The lifeguards go home at 5 or 5:30 leaving the beach unprotected in the critical last hour, when folk have been drinking all day and go for that ´final swim' - literally.
I don’t like talking badly about this beach but it is getting worse each year.
The good news is the surf is good and isn’t too affected by the corruption and incompetence’s on land.

The Barranquilla beaches are not very nice. The Puerto Colombia beaches are better, for sure. There are other beaches much better yet, but if you don't have time to visit Santa Marta or Santa Veronica or Cartagena, then visit Puerto Colombia. There is a nice plaza in the center of town, restaurants and shops.
