The 358,000-square-foot Harley-Davidson Vehicle and Powertrain Operations...

The 358,000-square-foot Harley-Davidson Vehicle and Powertrain Operations in Kansas City, Mo. was built in 1998 and provides free tours or extended Steel Toe Tours.

Kansas City employees produce the Sportster®, Dyna®, StreetTM and V-Rod® families of motorcycles, along with select Softail® models, from fabrication and finishing through final assembly to include the liquid-cooled Revolution® and Revolution XTM powertrains for the V-Rod and Street families.

The tour center features a series of displays that guide you through the various manufacturing and assembly processes. You'll also have the chance to sit on current production motorcycles and visit the gift shop, which features tour-related souvenirs.

Your tour experience begins with an introductory video. Then it's on to the factory floor where you'll witness a wide range of operations from welding, laser-cutting and frame-bending, to polishing and assembly. You'll see fenders and fuel tanks being formed, newly painted frames hanging on the line, and sophisticated robotic welding technology. You'll also see the Revolution® powertrain assembled from crankcase to cylinder heads.

The Steel Toe Tour is a great way to take a peak behind the curtain to see how Harley-Davidson motorcycles are built. Our guide was very informative and took the time to make sure everyone's questions were answered. My wife was the only woman on the tour and afterwards heard her telling several ladies who didn't go that they really... More

Before a tour begins two movies are shown. The first being the birth of H.D. in early movies & photos, with the second about modern production methods. Mackenzie, our guide, gave an excellent presentation of all aspects of the production. The group was allowed to get close to many steps of machines & the assembly of a cycle. She explained... More

Surprised at how modern this factory is. Exactly like an auto factory on a smaller scale and a different product. When the tour kicks up again in late August try avoid going on a Friday if possible. They work a 4/10 schedule so there is no production going on, on Fridays. Just a skeleton maintenance crew. It was OK for... More

Whether or not you're a motorcycle enthusiast the Great American Factory Tour of Harley - Davidson is an experience! "Behind every great machine are people with passion" this is evident as you tour the factory in Kansas City, Mo. Allow a minimum of an hour for the guided tour which is free. Tours are not offered on weekends or major... More

We did the Steel Toe Tour and it was fantastic. The take home goodies you get with the tour, make the price VERY cheap. The tour guide was very good and had a lot of information. Very well organised. Even if your not a Harley enthusiast, it is stil worthwhile having a look. They also conduct free tours.

This was a very compelling tour of the Harley Davidson manufacturing facilities. Be sure and get there early, the tours book up fast.

Attention to detail is top priority in this plant. Pressure is on workers to produce an excellent product and they do a great job. Sometimes it was difficult to hear over the high noise level in the work areas. The tour guide did an excellent job. If only I were 20 years younger I would be picking bugs out of... More

Tour was a lot of fun. Takes about an hour. You can see many things up close like robots, welding, assembly, steel forming. Guide answers questions. Can sit on the bikes in the reception/gift shop area. Free postcards at the end of the tour.

This was a nice start to our morning. My husband and I both enjoyed our tour very much. Everyone went out of there way to make sure we had an enjoyable time. They have a great tour and you actually get to see the real thing. We are going to go back next time we're in K.C.
