- ksarmanOaxaca, Mexico8,982 contributionsBut what a WonderWe visited many castles in France and Normandy Boutemont is a marvel; on an architectural, conservation, preservation level and the gardens are splendid even under a gray sky To do Definitely 25 minutes from HonfleurVisited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 19, 2024
- perle369Malaga, Spain1,827 contributionsWhat a hidden treasure!A superb snapshot of Normandie castle living! This is truly a hidden gem. From the moment you park your car and walk down the wooded drive you will be enchanted. Entering the castle through the little traditional style beamed cottage gift shop there is one surprise after another. One of the most interesting is the old motte where the original castle stood and the remnants of a Roman road which went past the castle. A wide gravel path, bordered by topiary, leads to the drawbridge over the moat and into the castle. There are only 3 large rooms to be visited as the castle is inhabited by a family. One of the nicest rooms is the drawing room with its beautiful fireplace and gorgeous furniture. There is a little chapel in the grounds which is delightful with its soft music playing. The gardens are full of interesting topiary, traditional mainly but a few fun examples such as the huge caterpillar. There is a zen garden, Italian garden, white garden etc. There is also a reflective pool with water lilies. If you stand in a particular spot the castle will be reflected in the pool. In the old vegetable gardens is the creperie cafe with plenty of seating, either in the old greenhouses or on the gravel. The staff are delightful and the service surprisingly quick. Apart from the wonderful crepes they do salads, cakes and rolls. We would definitely return.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 2, 2024
- Pom_tatin@yahoo.fr24 contributionsFine, but maybe adjust the Awards?Beautiful discovery with family and friends. The garden is beautiful. Just like the castle which is very well maintained. A small downside though: the rates are a bit high, especially at the pancake or shop. Too bad! We still recommend this tour that can be done with children (small puzzle game available for free)Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 7, 2024
- Patrizia TTurin, Italy1,397 contributionsNot to be missed for the magnificent gardensBeautiful castle 30 min from Honfleur, inside you can visit only 2 rooms but you can walk in the vast park. Magnificent flowers, plants, the pond, various types of garden, many benches, everything kept perfectly. There is also a refreshment point for a quick and good snack, fast service. We stayed over 2 hours because day a bit 'hot and some areas were nice cool in the silence of chirping but in an hour you can visit safely. Ticket 10 euros, reduced senior 9 but in our opinion they are well spent, not many people, free parking outside. To be recommendedVisited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 11, 2024

This quiet and tranquil garden is well worth a visit for the keen horticulturalist when in this area. The care and attention to detail of the owners exudes in the way the gardens are displayed to the public. The landscape design stems from an eminent designer in the early part of the 20C with sections of the garden compartmentalised by well trimmed topiary. The electrified train from Lisieux to Deauville runs within 300m of the chateau yet the mature trees and shrubs provide excellent screening. White flowers predominate the planting scheme broken up by pink roses and blue Solanum in stone planters. The Italian garden abuts the western boundary and classic trimmed box brings structure to the feature. The old chapel sits on higher land to the east of the chateau and an unusual box wave hedge is planted on the slope below. Summer 2022 has seen the opening of the Orangerie restaurant which displays green credentials, my lasagne had echoes of a ‘Charlie Bingham’ prepared meal served in a wooden container with the lasagne within a doylie. The quiche was most tasty and packed with finely chopped lardons. (Beware wasps). Two rooms of the chateau are open across the chateau drawbridge, La Loge is fitted in the style of an aged Masonic lodge, the other room displays familiar heraldry from a time gone by. 1000 years of history are on display with a motte, dating back ten centuries when a fortification on top provided security to the lands surrounding the chateau. Lumbered (light shows) are performed twice a week in peak summer months

Very beautiful gardens and lots of diversity. We stayed for around 2 hours including a stop at the creperie which was excellent. The staff were very welcoming and smiling, the pancakes were perfect and the homemade desserts just as much!
Absolutely worth a visit if you are in the area!!

Very beautiful gardens that are well maintained, a feast for the eyes, large varieties of plants and flowers arranged in a beautiful setting. Very nice for walking and also an ideal setting for taking beautiful photos with children. There is also a special place for picnics at the end of the park, but even that offers a nice view of the fields. You won't be bored for a moment. It's just a shame that there is so little to see of the interior of the castle. But it is still inhabited.

Arrived at the site 10 Augustv2020 after checking the website that it was open, only to find a notice saying that it was closed for the season. Having driven about 20 miles this was very annoying. Much better communication needed. The signs at the end of the road should say that the chateau and gardens are closed. We are very annoyed after a wasted journey.

Dear Linda,
Many thanks for your review, it must have been a great disappointment, the owners have changed in the meantime and there is now a proper ticket desk, a tea room and the gardens are being well looked after too.
Best regards

The park of Boutemont castle is absolutely worth a detour, for the beauty of its topiaries of course but not only because the flower beds are magnificent and the whole is very well presented and the castle is very pretty. Despite a rainy afternoon we had a very nice visit. Bravo for the maintenance of this area. Absolutely recommended!

We loved the visit to this magnificent historic castle, with drawbridge, moat, surrounding wall and towers.
The recently renovated and expanding garden is really inspiring and charming. Families and children friendly. Highly recommanded. Lunch at creperie is a must.

The gardens are absolutely beautifully planned and maintained, with several lightly themed sub gardens with a variety of native and classic exotic species. After a tour of the gardens, the chateau offers classic French crêpes and galettes next to a 100 year old greenhouse.
The château is very interesting, and the several different historical layers can be examined, from the Plantagenet motte and bailey mound from 12th century, over the original stronghouse wall section and towers from 16th and the masonic rooms from 19th, to finally the castle itself being used as a field hospital and the quarters of von Rundstedt in 1944, and later in the 60ies as a socialite hotspot (Aznavour and others visited)
Such a nice combo of beautiful, peaceful gardens and peace and quiet to delve into the history of Normandy. A lovely little gem and shouldn't be missed if you are travelling the region.
