We went there by Unitransco bus from Cartagena for 70.000 single journey, tickets bought by internet with a trafel agengy. The terminal of the bus is 12 km from the old city of Cartagena. Taxi cost 30.000 one way. We did a boattrip on the Magdalena river and we saw many different birds and iguana's,you could also swim in the river. The atmosphere in Mompox is very relaxed and save and the prices are much lower than in Cartagena. We stayed in Cafe Mompox whicht was a very nice kolonial house with a helpfull family.

Hot, Mosquitos, Noisy
Dec 2019
I was disappointed. I looked forward to visiting Mompos for years. I know hot because it is hot where I live. This is beyond hot. It is a humid, horrible heat that weighs. If you have allergies to insect bites, be very careful. I was not prepared for the number of insects that bite. I got sick. Average food. The promenade is nice, but ruined by motorcycles. The rest of the town is dirty and noisy, aggressive motorcyclists everywhere. The jewelry is fantastic. Good prices. There are much nicer colonial towns to visit, one being Villa de Leyva.

Well preserved colonial buildings
Sep 2019
We loved wandering through the historic part of Mompos. The buildings are beautiful, colorful and very well preserved. There are plenty of restaurants available and we enjoyed being serenaded by two parakeets in a tree next to our table at a restaurant by the river.

it makes you think of "amor en tiempos de colera" when boats steamed up the Rio Magdalena. Up till now one of the nicest old villages (for its well-kept architecture) I have seen in Colombia, especially as it is situated along the river. As the village is far out of the way of the autopista I expect it will stay this way for a long time.

Beautiful, but hard to get to!
Feb 2019 • Couples
A fabulous town, with beautiful buildings. Wonderfully situated on one side only of a branch of the Magdalena River - great churches, lovely people, good food, fascinating filigree workshops (and VERY reasonably priced jewellery from them), great trips into the wetlands where there are lots of birds, iguanas etc. Mompox is almost unspoilt, maybe because it is so hard to get to, but is absolutely worth visiting.

Charming sleepy colonial town
Mar 2018 • Friends
Mompox dates from the same period as Cartagena, has a remarkable number of beautiful churches and is justly famed for its Easter Processions. This festivity is not as well organised as in Popayan in Colombia and certainly not as well as in Antigua Guatemala, but the town, especially the colonial centre has a lot of charm. It tends to be extremely hot: take an umbrella or at least some head gear.

In love with Mompox
Nov 2017 • Friends
I’m a Colombian girl who loves traveling, so maybe my opinion is bias, but hey... look at my pictures. Besides my nationality, I think Mompos is a great place to understand the history of my country. It also has a special and quiet vibe that puts you on the right mood to enjoy the beauty of the Magdalena River. Please enjoy my pics :)

Amazing Colonial Town, not overrun by tourists
Aug 2017 • Couples
Getting to Mompos is not easy as it takes several hours to reach, but it was perhaps my favorite place in Colombia because unlike Cartagena, which had massive tourism, Mompos still retains its old world charm. It is a place of truly great architecture that is best experienced on foot. The fact that no cars are allowed in the streets only makes strolling in this town more enjoyable. The town is one of two UNESCO heritage sites in Colombia and a few minutes in the town will reveal to you why it has this privileged status. Mompos is a place that seems frozen in time and there is an amazing feeling here that time has stood still. It is a place where it becomes easy to imagine the magic realism of Marques' Colombia. If you want to experience Marques' magic Colombia then Mompos is the place for you.
