We loved wandering through the historic part of Mompos. The buildings are beautiful, colorful and very well preserved. There are plenty of restaurants available and we enjoyed being serenaded by two parakeets in a tree next to our table at a restaurant by the river.

We went there by Unitransco bus from Cartagena for 70.000 single journey, tickets bought by internet with a trafel agengy. The terminal of the bus is 12 km from the old city of Cartagena. Taxi cost 30.000 one way. We did a boattrip on the Magdalena river and we saw many different birds and iguana's,you could also swim in the river. The atmosphere in Mompox is very relaxed and save and the prices are much lower than in Cartagena. We stayed in Cafe Mompox whicht was a very nice kolonial house with a helpfull family.

I’m a Colombian girl who loves traveling, so maybe my opinion is bias, but hey... look at my pictures. Besides my nationality, I think Mompos is a great place to understand the history of my country. It also has a special and quiet vibe that puts you on the right mood to enjoy the beauty of the Magdalena River. Please enjoy my pics :)

I was disappointed. I looked forward to visiting Mompos for years. I know hot because it is hot where I live. This is beyond hot. It is a humid, horrible heat that weighs. If you have allergies to insect bites, be very careful. I was not prepared for the number of insects that bite. I got sick. Average food. The promenade is nice, but ruined by motorcycles. The rest of the town is dirty and noisy, aggressive motorcyclists everywhere. The jewelry is fantastic. Good prices. There are much nicer colonial towns to visit, one being Villa de Leyva.

This is definitely one of the most beautiful places I've seen so far in my travels around Colombia. Mompox has a rough around the edges kind of charm. The streets are suprisingly navigable, and I can easily walk to where I want to go because the downtown is so small.

My favourite part is the walkway along the river. It's so nice to be able to look across the river and just see cows and fields. I've had one negative experience so far. I was walking along the river on my own around 7ish, and two youngs guys on a moto passed alongside me. The guy on the back grabbed my butt as they passed, then they both turned back to see my reaction (which might have involved the middle finger and a few curses in Spanish...). I've made it a point to stay on the sidewalk -out of grabbing distance- since then. I just wanted to give the heads up to any other ladies traveling alone here. Also be prepared for the usual hissing and whistling.

Besides that, it has been a pleasure to walk around here. I've enjoyed seeing little glimpses into the beautiful old buildings here, and it's nice to see the locals chilling out in the evening.

A really beautiful and stunning old colonial town - it is quiet, but interesting - you have to do a bit of exploring to get under the skin of the town and talk to the people to get to the heart of it.

I have visited Mompos twice since I have lived in Colombia, and there will definitely be more visits in the future: it's a simply magical place. There are so many superlatives to use when describing Mompos that it's almost not worth trying other than to simply say: go and see it for yourself.
Since my first visit they have completed an expensive and tasteful renovation of the main road that runs along the Magdalena River past some of the most important historical buildings, and this has really added to the appeal of the town. The historic center is notable for it's incredible colonial churches, and for the fact that most of the old buildings still serve their original purpose, even hundreds of years later. There is also a troupe of Howler Monkeys than live around the town and swing through on the electricity wires, really adding to the strange and surreal beauty of this isolated, off-the-beaten-track town.

it makes you think of "amor en tiempos de colera" when boats steamed up the Rio Magdalena. Up till now one of the nicest old villages (for its well-kept architecture) I have seen in Colombia, especially as it is situated along the river. As the village is far out of the way of the autopista I expect it will stay this way for a long time.

A fabulous town, with beautiful buildings. Wonderfully situated on one side only of a branch of the Magdalena River - great churches, lovely people, good food, fascinating filigree workshops (and VERY reasonably priced jewellery from them), great trips into the wetlands where there are lots of birds, iguanas etc. Mompox is almost unspoilt, maybe because it is so hard to get to, but is absolutely worth visiting.
