About
Lunazul Surf School & Shop is a family business located on the main beach in Sayulita, Mexico. We give surf lessons, organize surf trips to La Lancha and other Punta de Mita surf spots, and have a broad selection of surfboards, paddleboards and boogie boards for rent. We were established in 2004 and have since taken pride in teaching thousands of people to surf! Our goal at Lunazul is to always provide a fun and safe environment to teach our students to surf. We have a tight crew of instructors who, not only are excellent surfers, but amazing instructors. We assess your individual abilities and challenge you just enough to improve your current level, while still making it super fun. We look forward to meeting you and sharing some waves together. Our two kids, 8 and 6 years' old both learned to surf during their first 90 min lesson, plus they got 1 extra hour to use the surf boards after the class finished. They enjoyed their lesson with Papas, he was patient and very calm with them but also a good straight forward teach - just what kids need.
We went back the next day for more lessons. If you're flexible with your schedule they can be flexible with how you book your classes...single class, package, two kids private, single kid private, etc. (I wondered if there would be group lessons but opted for private so my kids would get the hang of surfing quickly...and when we were on the beach I never actually saw a group lesson...maybe it was quieter but I get the impression most group lessons are booked by large groups of friends - so budget accordingly.)
The team in the shop also gave us good advice on what days the kids should learn to surf because of the weather/wind and waves getting bigger. It wasn't a "sell" by them, they were spot on.
Lunazul is also a cool surf shop—so there will be chilled surfers and laid back folks, that's part of the vibe and charm.
It gets the the thumbs up and I'd book more lessons, next time we're in Sayulita.

As someone who has never surfed and is a wee bit nervous of the sea, I cursed my husband for booking a lesson for me. Took it all back after the amazing lesson i had with Papas...he put me at ease and explained things so well that I actually managed to stand up!!
My 5 year old son also had a lesson and was completely looked after. He took a few tumbles in the waves but was so looked after by Carlos none of it fazed him!!
From a five year old and forty year old who had never tried surfing before.. we highly recommend Lunazul!!

Lunazul was fabulous! My husband and son took their first surf lessons with Lunazul last month (12/19). After instruction on the beach, they were ready for the waves. The instructor stayed with them the entire time and provided valuable support by telling them when to start paddling and when to stand up. (He also gave them a "boost" in paddling when they needed it!)
The next day, Lunazul noted that the local waves were too big for beginners, so they were ferrying beginner surfers to a calmer beach. We didn't have enough time, however, so my son took a lesson from a different company. He was pretty much left on his own once they got in the water. If it hadn't been for his lesson with Lunazul, he wouldn't have know how to deal with the waves.
I highly recommend Lunazul for their instruction, exceptional support in the water, and their judgement of the waves.

Hadn't surfed in about a year ( Total beginner ) so took a single lesson to review and get some pointers. Papas gave me a couple of great tips to get up on the board quicker and get back into the swing. We moved from smaller waves across to more intermediate and he quickly showed me how to see the waves better and gain confidence. Awesome lesson and well worth the time. I was able to go back and just rent a board and ask the staff about waves and pick up some tips each time. The entire staff was awesome. Highly recommend them whether a beginner or experienced surfer. Great selection or boards and lots of options for rentals or lessons.

I have been on a surf board once in my life before this trip and now I can not get off one. The instructors at Luna Azul are laid back, friendly, always smiling and really love their jobs. Papas & Chito made me laugh every morning surf session and gave me tips about the city outside of the ocean. The surf shop is cozy and in a wonderful location. Would def recommend and come back 1000 million times.

Big kudos to Chito at Lunazul Surf Shop. He took great care of my kids (ages 10 and 11) on their very first ever surf lessons plus made it a ton of fun. They got up on the board and LOVED it!! Lunazul has a storefront with lockers you can use so you don't have to worry about your stuff on the beach. They let my son use their bathroom too which was a lifesaver. At the end of the day Chito went above and beyond to help us find some quick food to-go for our hungry kiddos plus a taxi ride back to Puerto Vallarta. Highly recommend Lunazul Surf School and Shop! We'd love to go back someday....

Excellent surf coaches for beginner to advanced lessons. These guys really know their stuff. If you are looking for some high quality surfboards they also have you covered. Carrying a wide range of premium surfboards you are sure to find one that fits your style. We highly recommend this shop! Check them out for all your surf good vibes!

I'm not a surfer but I was able to stand up and ride some waves all the way in to the beach...it must have been due to some good tips and little pushes from our instructor. Super laid back, easy going, great place to learn to surf.

This was my first surf lesson. Chito was amazing. We spent just enough time on the beach working on my pop-up, and then got into the water. I was up and surfing in no time. Chito made it fun, and helped build confidence from the start, but also gave helpful tips after each ride. Sayulita is a great beach for beginners: long, gentle breaks are perfect to start out on.
Overall, a great instructor and a great experience.

My daughter met up with me in Mexico where I have been living for the past 6 months. One thing we both wanted to learn to do was surf. She had a 6 month head start to my never having been on a surfboard. We came down to Sayulita every weekend in November and December. Tried a few other surf schools which were also good but I was struggling to consistently get up on the board if at all. My daughter got up on her first try and was on to bigger waves in the first weekend. She was renting boards from Lunazul and the guys were super generous with suggestions for her to help her improve quickly.
My friends came down with their 9-year-old daughter and had a great time with Lunazul Surf Instructors so I switched over and had a lesson with Papas from Lunazul. What I can say and what I see in all the reviews is that the instructors here really love to surf and are really, really good at breaking down surfing and make it easier to learn. Papas adapted his instructions to what felt comfortable for me which I really appreciated. I was up on my first wave and almost every single wave after. I'm definitely coming back this summer for more lessons. Thanks for everything guys!

Hi there,
We are renting a beachfront villa in Punta del burro in January. I have 2 boys age 10 and 13 and a husband who would like to have a surfing lesson. Would it be possible to have an instructor come to us? All 3 are complete beginners.

Hi there, yes, we can have an instructor come to you. Price per instructor is $200 USD/ half day and $300 USD/ day. Does not include surfboards.
Or if you don't have boards and want just a surf lesson, price is $60 USD/ person including a board. Lesson lasts 1.5 hours.
ps. Are you sure you want to learn in Burros? I recommend you get a pair of booties for the rocks as it is all rock bottom. :)
