Those foreigners who learn Russian know that Russians tend to pronounce "A-a-a" whenever it is written "O". There used to be a rare exception though - Vologda and surroundings. Not anymore. You'll hardly hear this "correct" pronunciation here nowadays, at least not in the city. Mass media played its role. So this is a monument to an endangered letter - or rather sound - close to extinction. Some people think that it's kitsch, ugly, stupid but others take selfies and love it. Actually, it's so popular that once it even collapsed because fans kept on climbing it for a photo opportunity. Local authorities had to temporarily remove it, reinforce its bottom and return to its "place of origin" again. Let's hope it's safer now.
