The Casa da Inquisicao provides a background of the Jewish faith in the history of Monsaraz. Some of the information is presented in an “opinionated” perspective, and you may not agree, or be aware of, what you read regarding the displays.

Buying a ticket to the Museu do Fresco grants you admission to House of the Inquisition. It’s just down the street. Make sure you see the entire venue; you have to go up stairs on the outside to see it all.

This is a small exhibition; give it a few minutes.

Although the information is largely in Portuguese, I still found this small museum a worthwhile stop. It just reminds us all of how our faith is only faith if it is not coherced. Sobering and intriguing.

We were very moved by our visit to the House of the Inquisition. There is an interactive exhibit in which you can click on the name of someone from Monsaraz who was investigated by the Inquisition. You learn their name and profession, what they were accused of, who accused them, and what happened. You learn that some were tortured before being executed. Every town throughout Spain and Portugal should have a similar experience. How else do we learn? Perhaps, we never do
