Visited on a lovely sunny day. This castle has many interesting spaces and the terrace is really interesting and has great views from all sides. The kids loved exploring.

Great Castle
Nov 2019
The Castle is located on the banks of the Rhone River in Tarascon, which is about 20 km north of Arles.

It is an impressive castle on the outside with massive walls and a moat. It is very well preserved for a 15th century castle. This is probably partially due to the fact that it was used as a prison until the 1920's. Several of the rooms have prisoner graffiti, some exceptional. The castle bills itself as one of the best preserved castles in France, and it lives up to that reputation.

Upon entry a brochure, in English (and other languages) is provided for a self-guided tour. This is easy to follow and contains information about the castle and each room on the tour. The rooms are spare with no furniture. There are several displays of information.

On the top level there are views of the Rhone River, the city, and the countryside.

Be advised that there are many stairs, including steep and narrow circular stairs.

This is well worth a visit.

Great access to a castle
Oct 2019 • Couples
Nicely preserved castle, we were amazed how much of it is open on the self-tour. We were able to climb up seven flights of stairs to the roof deck and back down the other side. We visited 33 rooms in all and got to know the caste up close and personal as never before available to us in other historic sites.

Excellent castle, well presented and maintained
Sep 2019 • Friends
We have visited many years ago but hadn't remembered how excellent this castle is. Well restored after centuries of use as a prison, very atmospheric and fairly easy to negotiate, although many spiral staircases to arrive at the top. Views from the roof are amazing, and reading the graffiti from the British prisoners of war in the 1750's is interesting.
There are also incised pictures of boats from the 14th century, just amazing
A good shop on the way in and excellent
explanatory leaflets in various languages.

Beautiful from the river

We were on a rivercruise. The ship slowed down so that we could admire the beauty of this castle from the water. Lovely.

Castle Tour
Aug 2019 • Couples
Visited whilst cruise boat docked locally. Over 20 rooms viewed on a one way system with grand vista from rooftop, up and down three flights, with an English version of guide leaflet. Most rooms devoid other than scratchings from its time holding prisoners but impressive never the less. If in the area worth the 7.5 Euro entrance fee. Then pop across to the church.

Worth the visit
May 2019 • Couples
Extraordinary castle from 13th century built on a rock facing the Rhone. The visitor is guided through the entire building over several floors until the roof terrace with view over Baucaire, its ruined castle, and the Rhone. Wear good walking shoes.

well preserved castle
Aug 2018 • Couples
The castle is located at western edge of town abutting the Rhone. entrance is through a large gate with the first of many flights of stairs leading up to a well stocked bookshop and gift store on your way in. Great views across to Beaucaire on the west side of the Rhone.

Impressive!

Well worth the hike up and down numerous stairs (many of them circular) to get a feel for life in this medieval structure. Very well preserved/reconstructed. Furnishings are minimal. Views from the top are beautiful. It is very large—anyone with mobility challenges may have difficulty seeing much of the place.

Amazing castle and former prison
Mar 2019 • Couples
Tour of the Chateau is easy to follow with 33 stops and many stairs, some steep. The fee is 7.5 E per adult and I thought worth it. Views of the Rhone and surrounding area are very good and details of the castle and insights into medieval life interesting.
