We like to get a lot of steps when we are on our camping RV trip, and this free privately owned botanical garden is open to the public. It fit the bill for us in the Columbia area. Very pretty and well maintained.

Although this is a small garden/park area, it is a great place to sit & visit with someone, read a book, have a picnic, walk, or relax. The trees, lawns, and plants are well-maintained. The trees and most plants have a name label and there are many plants. The koi pool is in a shaded area, so you can easily spend a long time watching the fish.

My wife and I spent three hours checking out everything in the garden from perennials, annuals, cacti gardens, waterfalls and streams. Perfect place in the late summer and fall, I can't wait to go back in the Spring. Near downtown and perfect

This is the most amazing Botanical garden that I have ever seen. The beauty of this garden is jaw dropping. It was created by the insurance company that formed the Missouri Farmers Association. The replica of a 19th century school is where they met to form their association. The garden is free with free concerts on the grounds and is in honor of all agricultural people. Loved that they honored the Vietnam veterans. A cool and beautiful place to walk. The Koi were beautiful.

Shelter Gardens is a five-acre private park owned by Shelter Insurance. I walk there three days a week and it is perfect. As the seasons change so do the plantings. Spring brings the tulips, summer the cone flowers and fall the mums. In between, there are plantings of dozens of flowers. The Gardens are perfectly maintained and the sidewalks are always clear of fallen leaves, etc. The trees and shrubs are labled as in a botanical garden. This is a very special place in Columbia and a wonderful place to visit during Spring, Summer and Fall. A perfect place to enjoy the green calm of nature.

Public garden provided by insurance company. I only had a few hours in Columbia, and found this garden. Nice little succulent area, evergreen area, and more. I did leave with mosquito bites but otherwise enjoyed a half hour stroll.

This park reminded me of a hundred wealthy suburban front lawns smashed together in the most illogical patchwork possible. Gaudy fountains, pointless cherub statutes, and strangely labeled plants ("Purple Popcorn" is not a real thing people) made me feel about as interested in the park as I would be buying life insurance.

Also, the entire place is crammed in to an area smaller than my backyard. If you want to go on a nice walk, try Grindstone or Stephens. The .1 mile around this place isn't worth it.

Take a half hour or so to visit this very nice garden with free admission. Excellent variety of plants/flowers/trees, and a historic schoolhouse you can show the kids as well. We went with another family while we were all visiting Columbia this weekend

Shelter Gardens is a welcome oasis that will help you "get back to nature" while only blocks from the most heavily commercialized streets in Columbia. You can hear the birds, enjoy the sound of the natural rock fountain nestled among the bamboo, and stroll leisurely or do a power walk. There is a charming pavilion where you may have a picnic lunch or sit and do people, bunny, squirrel, or bird watching. You might even enjoy being there during a quiet summer rain. Take a break. Shelter Gardens is free for you and your family to enjoy year round.

What a phenomenal place! We enjoyed this so much that we plan to return in the Fall. How peaceful and what a variety of gardens; ponds; statues. Be sure to start or end up inside the schoolroom. This is a photographer's paradise and I am sure gets a lot of requests for weddings; etc. shrubs, flowers, etc are labeled which is nice if you see something you like and might want to purchase one at a shop but aren't sure. Gardens include one containing desert shrub/flower dedicated to the service men and women of Desert Storm, and another which has the labels in Braille. Never thought much about Shelter Insurance but if I were their employee I'd be very happy in my job and take my lunch to the gardens everyday (or a good book).
