About
At the Center for Missouri Studies, a second-floor research center connects students, researchers, patrons, and genealogists with the collections that the State Historical Society of Missouri holds on their behalf. The Center's impressive first-floor gallery is designed to properly showcase one-of-a-kind pieces, whether they are the iconic works of George Caleb Bingham and Thomas Hart Benton or original Hare and Hare architectural drawings from the Kansas City collections. Flexible public spaces are also available for hosting a wide range of events. Through its education program, the Center fosters ongoing study of Missouri's past, encouraging connections among scholars in fields such as history, geography, folklore, anthropology, journalism, and other disciplines. Center initiatives consolidate and extend the State Historical Society of Missouri's multifaceted efforts to support scholars, publish new works, provide educational programs, and promote greater understanding of Missouri.

This architectural gem is hidden across the street from peace park in downtown columbia. The exterior and interior designs are remarkable and add another great building to Columbia. The art in the gallery is important and astonishing. The library is huge and gorgeously appointed. The interior is impressive at every turn. This is a new do not miss when visiting columbia.

Today, August 10, 2019, was the opening day of the State Historical Society. The opening remarks were held in peace Park, directly across the street from the new building. The new building boasts over 70,000 square feet with viewing access to the impressive art collection of Thomas Hart Benton and George Caleb Bingham. Maps, literature, oral recordings and other pertinent historical artifacts are now housed in in the third and newest State Historical Society of Missouri building. Two years from today, Missouri will note her 200th anniversary of statehood.

What a beautiful building with amazing artwork and an incredible research library. It even has a nice little bookstore with locally sourced treats, gifts, and books.

Learn more about the state of Missouri, however, you may have to wait until August 10, 2019. The present building will close in mid-April through mid-August as it moves into a new home. August 10, 2019 will begin the new chapter in preservation and exploration of Missouri.

The society will soon have a new home in a new building across from Peace Park. They should be able to display more artwork there. Get on their email list for interesting events. There is a lot of state history tucked away there.
