About
Nestled within Faust Park and a division of the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Butterfly House was the first stand-alone insectarium to be accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. Open year-round, the 8,000 sq foot Tropical Conservatory is the heart of the Butterfly House. Its carefully controlled environment houses nearly 2,000 tropical butterflies in free flight. As many as 80 butterfly species and 150 tropical plant species are exhibited. The Exhibit Hall is where you'll find Small Wonders, a living exhibit focusing on various other invertebrates. The outdoor Native Butterfly Garden is a pollinator-friendly demonstration garden. Plants were carefully selected to provide a habitat for the pollinators and other animals in Faust Park as well as to serve as host plants for caterpillars and nectar sources for butterflies. The Native Butterfly Garden provides a favorite setting for education programs, wedding ceremonies, and other private event celebrations.

Seeing all the different butterflies and tropical plants. Watching them hatch. Playing on the caterpillar statue outside and taking pictures in butterfly cut outs. The gift shop had some cool gifts, I got butterfly earrings.

My favorite part was going inside and seeing all of the butterflies 🦋 and plants 🪴. The place is awesome. We saw many varieties of butterflies 🦋and plants 🪴that we don't see everyday. I'm glad that I'm a member. They allow you to release a butterfly for it's first flight. The place is also very educational.

We spent over an hour in the aviary watching many varieties of butterflies. I got to release my own butterfly into the new habitat. They keep this attraction immaculate and we enjoy our visit every time we go. They have a gift shop that is fun to walk through.

My daughter in now 9 and she’s gone to the Butterfly House twice a tear every year and still wants to go. She loves it! We could match her growth patterns per the pictures. Plus she gets to hit up the play ground afterwards which is great. I’ve even taken advantage of the food truck evening once or twice and it’s something I get to enjoy besides her smiles. This year we did the hay ride which seemed like a little boring as an adult though the kids loved it until they dropped us off to appreciate the settlement town with all the great volunteers that really know their stuff. It was huge with so much information and we’ll be back. Faust park in general is a wonderful place top to bottom and when any one comes into town I send them there despite varying age groups. It’s become a st.louis institution to say the least. Go and enjoy ASAP!

Architecturally wonderful, scientifically educational, and just plain fun! Wander through gardens as the residents flutter around and land upon you.
A great rainy day activity, as it's all under roof...and can be combined with a ride on a restored indoor carousel right next door.

This is a wonderful place for children, especially young children. My grandson (who was five) was enthralled and even chastised some older children for talking while he was trying to watch the movie about the butterflies becoming butterflies.

Arrived on a Saturday around 1. It wasn’t too busy, even with a wedding going on. The main tropical display is of ~1500 butterflies mainly from Central America. Plenty to see and enjoy. There is also an outdoor garden to enjoy together with a small lake and a lovely children’s play area.

We visited here on a cold, dreary day. I think it was even raining. But once we walked in, it was like being transported into a completely different world. I believe the lady who briefly talked to our group before we entered said there were about 1,800 butterflies in the building. That's kind of hard to picture. Even typing it right now doesn't really do the experience justice.

Once you walk in the main room, it really is like walking into a tropical wonderland. Plants, flowers, vines - foliage of all kinds, everywhere. And before you know it...butterflies. Flying colors, assorted shapes - big, small, tiny, some the size of bats. It's wild. It's wonderful. It's magical. If you live in the mid-west, the colors and patterns on some of these insects are going to blow you away. If you're used to seeing Monarchs, which are cool in their own right, you haven't seen anything yet.

They provide a paper guide to help you identify what you are seeing, but we just went in blind. The experience - being surrounded by beautiful, fluttery creatures - was enough. We were so busy following them, watching them, taking our own pictures - that was more than enough. Yes, it's good for kids, but to be honest, I don't know if most children under twelve (?) would have the patience to "sit back" and appreciate the experience. I know - every kid is different and they do provide a number of "kid friendly" activities in the other part of the building. But if you want to really soak up what is happening, carve out an unimpeded hour or two for yourself. It's worth it.

Extreme recommend.

This was a great place to visit! Walking through the butterfly house itself is awesome. They are everywhere and you can watch them eat and chase each other around and even land on you for a photo! It is hot and humid in there so keep that in mind for your visit. There is also a garden outside to visit and other insects to learn about inside. They have a bunch of chrysalis and cocoons you can look at to see the different colors and shapes. We had a great time here and would love to go back!
