Spent 3 nights in Kerkini and went on 2 x 2hr boat rides with itavros dot com (also runs Lemneos hotel and works with others like ihnalatis guesthouse). Nikos is a fantastic guide - knows the lake and birds very well. Great for wildlife lovers and photographers.

Kerkini Lake is a hydrobiotope for 300 species of birds, 100 species of fish and of course many species of plants and flowers. This lake is an artificial project. People fill this lake from March to August. This period in which many species of birds come to spend their summer in a hot place, is the most suitable for a touring by boat with experienced ship owners. From September to February some species migrate, meanwhile some others come. This period you should use a 4x4 touring because the lake has almost the half surface. Apart from this activities you can go for riding, bicycling, hiking and of course photographing

We stayed at Oikoperigiitis Hotel on the outskirts of Kerkini Village a 10 minute walk to the lake. The Hotel staff and owner were very helpful and we were told about boat trips on the lake which they organized and we had the opportunity to hire bicycles from the hotel as well.

The walk down the country lane towards Kerkini Lake was lovely being amongst nature with horses grazing, birds singing and hundreds of sunflowers growing in the fields. As mentioned before we took a boat trip on the lake early in the morning and which was so peaceful and had a scenic view. Water lilies cover part of the lake with beautiful yellow flowers and we were shown the nesting areas where we saw Pelicans, Cormorants, Herons, Spoonbills and Egrets which was so amazing to see. The lake is man-made, however it is a haven to wildlife well worth visiting.

We had a fantastic 2 hours on a boat with our guide Vasilis. He spoke great English and really knew all about the wildlife of the lake. There were only 5 of us on the trip. 7.00am to 9.00am to catch the good light for photography. He attracted Pelicans which he feeds in the winter. I got some fantastic shots as they flew towards the boat. Great views of both types of Peilcan, Flammingos, Spoonbills and lots of Egrets.
A great way to start a day birdwatching on Lake Kerkini.

Lake Kerkini is one of the most important wetlands in Europe. What a stunning place!!! Birds everywhere and the greatest number of buffalos in Greece. Everything here exicts in a pieceful kingdom!!
During your visit try a lot of outdoor activities. Cycling around the lakeside villages or take your own canoe. Don t miss a boat ride with the traditional boats!!! A real bird watching paradise!! (if you are lucky you can see flamingos all around)
Try sweet kazan dipi and look for buffalo milk yogurt!
Lake Kerkini is the perfect place to refresh your mind and soul!!
Don't miss it!!

A visit to the Kerkini lake is certainly worthwhile. On the northside of the lake surrounded by picturesque mountains, one can go to the damside. There's a little bit of info on the lake, but very little to see other than the lake itself. Don't fear but take a boat (7,5€). These cross the lake to the shallower parts to the east. Here is vast bird sanctuary. Early May there were legions of cormorants as well as nesting pelicans. Other birds can be seen and the boat travels through a submerged forest.
In total the boat journey lasts 1,5 hours.

Breathtaking views of a manmade lake with rare birds and buffalo herds.
The more one travels around the lake the more he/she discovers.
If you go there, don't just stay at the cafes. Walk or drive around the lake.
