We were traveling south on the Natchez Trace with plans to go into Mississippi to the Tishomingo State Park. The Trace was closed for resurfacing so we got off at the detour and routed our way to the state park. What a huge disappointment. With our admission, they provided us with a paper map that did not give much information or directions. There were only a handful of people at the park that Sunday which was fortunate for me as I turned to access the bathrooms (which were closed and looked in terrible shape) only to discover at the end of my loop that I was going the wrong way. There were no signs!
We continued on looking for a restroom and saw a sign for The Lodge. That seemed promising. Nope. This beautiful building looks abandoned, along with the empty swimming pool and volleyball court. Windows were missing, vines overtaking the sides, and general age related issues. We did cross the suspension bridge. We saw a pavilion...maybe a bathroom. Not at the pavilion but there was a small building nearby in terrible shape. It was a "bathroom" but that is being generous. It was missing a toilet in one of the stalls and the windows were boarded up. The stall I used had mouse/rat droppings everywhere so I didn't touch anything. So disgusting!
We saw a group cabin campground so we followed a road that showed another two buildings that looked abandoned from the 1960's. Maybe one might have been a mess hall?
We did see an old cabin that we could explore, however, the bridge to access it was condemned from both sides. We moved along. We spent less than an hour in this state park. It has so much potential but it seems years of neglect has gotten the better of it. We did notice a State Funding board at the entrance, so hopefully this park will get the care it needs.
Not a good first impression of our first visit to Mississippi.

We stayed in the RV/camping area. Our side was shady and quiet. The only issue was that the dump station was out of order and we were told to go to the paved side and use a site. This caused issues with a couple of campers on that side. One woman in particular was very rude and stated that she and the other campers weren't informed. We just explained, got in and out quickly, and we were polite and tried to be understanding to her concerns as well. The pool wasn't working and it's actually closed with no sign of reopening. The people at the entrance were very kind, helpful, and professional. It's a pretty place for a weekend stay.

Spent two nights in Cabin 6 at Tishomingo State Park. This is a wonderful park for getting away from it all. There is no tv or Wifi so forget about your phone for a few days. Cabin 6 is great, sure there are a few things they could repair in the bathroom, but just bring your shower shoes and you will be fine. Just a few tiles missing on the floor of the shower. The beds were great, the kitchen could use updated appliances. We had a fire and stayed on the covered porch a lot. The park itself is great. so many great trails and a lot of history. Like a lot of people said, the state could do some maintenance on the park. Its a shame government spends so much money on frivolous things when our parks could be so nice and such a great get away for families. We had a wonderful time and will certainly be back.

Unfortunately, we only got to spend a few hours at the park because we had other places to be, but the time we did spend here was memorable. We walked a short and visited the bridge. We drove around a bit and saw some some of the park. The park is a good size and has some beautiful scenery and some unique structures. This was easily one of the best stops we had while traveling down the Natchez Trace. I only wish we could have spent more time here.

Great walking trails. We stayed in #57 with waterside and roomy, pretty, shady spot BUT park needs to do some major work on inclines, erosion at ends of slabs becoming dangerous for RV, and pot holes an issue for RV. Only short RV's at end area circle turn-around. No sewer hookups. Very limited to no cell phone service in majority of the park. A little at washer dryer building. And...download your hiking trail maps before you arrive.

Nice state park, it was cool and creepy to be the only one there at the time. I visited on a Thursday morning. I did the 2-mile loop and was expecting to see a waterfall but didn't. I realized I literally entered and returned the same way, so I guess I didn't do a loop IDK. There's a $2 entrance fee

My parents and I stayed in cabin #4 as we traveled the Natchez Trace. The cabin was simply wonderful for the reasonable price paid. The fall colors were at their peak and the area was so peaceful & quite. The cabin was very stocked with all our needs, except for groceries which were an easy drive to the pleasant town nearby. The beds slept very well and that enclose screen porch made for a wonderful evening's location of conversation in the swing. We even ate our dinner on this porch. The rock formations are an oddity for Mississippi, so Tishomingo gets my vote as the state's prettiest state park.

This isn't my favorite place ever, but it is my favorite place in my home state of Mississippi! I love going places to hike and the 13 miles of hiking trails here are the best I've found in Mississippi. This place reminds me of the smokies. There are streams, a small waterfall (depending on the weather), large boulders, cliffs, old cabins, and overall, great hiking trails (non paved). I've seen people come here to rock climb and this must be the only place in Mississippi that you can do this. If you enjoy disk golf, this is your place. I think they said there are 3 disk golf courses inside the park now. I don't play it myself, but I did notice disk golf "holes" all over the place. If you are here in an RV and looking for a great big lake with a nice view then you will probably be disappointed. While there are plenty of RV parking places, the lake is very small and tends to run low the last few years making it even smaller. The swinging bridge built by the CCC is, undoubtedly, the park's crown jewel. It spans across Bear Creek to the hiking trails on the other side of the bridge. The trails on this side are a little tougher than those on the side you park on and are very enjoyable.

I know this place has cabins but I've never stayed there and cannot comment on them. I also know there is a nature museum there but it hasn't been open for years. I would love to see this reopened.

If you like hiking then don't skip this place.

Offers gorgeous creek, lake, springs, and remarkably scenic trails (do not forget insect repellant!). Very historic. Six rustic 1930s CCC-built family cabins are priced low and are comfortable, clean, and well-equipped for inside and outside cooking/lounging; loved the cabin fireplaces, screened porches, stone floors, and old heavy wood doors but be warned: Cabins won't appeal to the hoity-toity. Tent and RV camping also available. There's no TV or Internet so bring books, board games, portable DVDs/player in case of rain and for late night. Besides hiking, there's rock climbing, canoeing, and fishing. You can buy an out-of state fishing license at park, $10 for one day, $18 for three days (must have cash for license, credit/debit cards OK for other park costs). Note: Front desk balks at even an hour or two early check-in even when cabins are vacant and cleaned. Think park once had nature center and gift shop but not anymore and some pool-area construction was going on early May 2009. Park needs major sprucing but understandable given drain on state from hurricanes and economy woes. Call for current status of everything, especially bath houses which seemed kind of iffy, a problem for tent campers. See some nice overlooks within a few miles' drive of the park.

What a great find! I am surprised how few people I talk to have been here. We took the Natchez Trace up from Jackson and it was a scenic drive, we really got to see the states geography change. We pulled our pop-up can set up at the campground which was nice, although the lake was low. On Saturday morning our family of 6 took the 6.5 mile Bear creek canoe trip which was beautiful. The kids and parents alike found it both relaxing and fun! On our way back to the campsite we stopped off at the well house and the kids had a blast running and climbing all over everything! We used the bathhouses at the campground and they were clean and well maintained. They next day we went for a hike on the Outcropping trail and the other adjacent trail, it was great lots of boulders and rock face to climb. We would love to return with proper climbing gear and really climb! They only complaint we have is poison ivy, our son got a bad case of it but we know that's part of the cost of having fun outdoors!
