I have always found it interesting to visit authors’ homes. Welty is an icon in American letters, and she lived almost her entire adult life within the walks of this Tudor house in a pleasant Southern neighborhood. Visitors start with a 20 minute film in the house next door. There are also handsome exhibits in that space. That space also has a small gift shop and a public restroom.

The guided tours are availed four times a day, and we were the only ones on ours. The house is filled with books, and almost all the artifacts are Welty’s preserved after her accomplished life ended within its walls after 92 years. After the house tour, visitors may look at her garden with its winter blooming camellias.

My visit has encouraged me to reread her work. I would recommend a visit here for anyone interested in her writing.

I loved every moment of my time here. I had read the book "One Writer's Garden" and it was the perfect stage-setter for my visit. The docent was knowledgeable and gave a good tour. The tour begins with a video which was very helpful, and I returned to the Visitor Center after the tour.

It helped that I was there on a gorgeous April day. The camellias were almost done, but azaleas were beautiful and roses just beginning to bloom.

We stopped by this nice house on a visit to Jackson. It is in a wonderful neighborhood and it’s a beautiful home.

We also appreciated the yard.

It’s in a neighborhood so be polite and respectful but it’s a great stop in Jackson.

Go enjoy!

There are three types of individuals who will appreciate the house tour. 1) Those who have a passing interest in literature like myself. It is easy to gain from the tour an appreciation for the lack of emphasis on material possessions by Welty, her creativity, and the interest in the gardens highlights the descriptiveness of nature that shows up in some of her works 2) Those who are fanatics about Eudora Welty and 3) Those who are interested in the intersection of her life with the Civil Rights Movement. It is a little hard for me to evaluate my tour because I was part of a group tour that was led by a professor who personally knew Welty and was her biographer. I know that the other group that did not have her biographer, but was also pleased with their tour. . As with every place that I have visited in Jackson, the staff shows nothing but the utmost hospitality providing you act with class and dignity as well. The home itself is in an upper middle class neighborhood and sits directly across from Belhaven University. It should be easy to find parking as there are several spots right out in front of the home that are reserved for the Welty home. The price is very reasonable at 5 dollars per person. It should take you about an hour to an hour and a half to tour through the house, gardens, gift shop. A good value!

This is one of the best writer-museum houses. As you are guided around by one of the docents (ours was Caroline, who knew Ms. Welty by sight, and was most knowledgeable) it is as if Ms. Welty had just stepped out, and loaned you the key, so that you could tour the house. The place is full of books, on shelves, but also on almost every horizontal surface! A variety of Ms. Welty's books in print and on CD are available for purchase in the house where you buy your tickets and view the introductory video before starting the tour. There is also a gorgeous garden, full of camellias blooming in the springtime.

We took a Deep South road trip last August and stopped by Eudora Welty House and Garden on the morning we were departing for New Orleans. It was hands down my favorite experience of the whole two weeks. You begin the tour in the welcome center, where we were met by the director and our two tour guides (one was training). They were very friendly and made us feel genuinely welcomed. After orienting yourself with the various items on display, you watch a short film and then proceed to the house next door. The house is kept in immaculate condition and our guides were very knowledgeable. Admittedly I'm biased as Ms. Welty is one of my favorite authors (and if you haven't already, please read The Optimist's Daughter before your trip, as it is her most autobiographical work and you will spots signs all around the house), but I found it probably the loveliest house museum I've visited. Hemingway Home, by way of example, is beautiful but overcrowded and guests are rushed in and out. At Welty House, visitors schedule ahead and are assigned a visiting time. As such, we had the entire house and garden to ourselves. A phenomenal experience and an absolute must for literate travelers!

We had a wonderful tour of the house. The tour actually starts at the house next door, where there are some nice exhibits and a great short film.
After the film, the tour begins! Our guide was very impressive and knowledgeable about the author, her family and life. It was a joy to see the rooms where Ms. Welty worked and lived, and the lovely restored gardens that she and her mother tended.
The house is a great memorial to a great writer who was ahead of her time in many ways.

The Eudora Welty House and Garden are on a beautiful tree-lined street near the college. It's nice just walking around there even if you don't go in the house. But Welty is classic American writer and to be able to tour where she lived and work is truly special.

I was familiar of Eudora Welty's name and that she was an author but came knowing nothing else. I really enjoyed learning more about her and am now interested in reading her short stories and would love to see more of her photography. Docent led tours are timed so check the times before you go. The docent was a wealth of knowledge and if you share your interest they will tailor the information to you. The home is wonderful and gardens lovely. I wish I could have seen the flowers in bloom! Beautiful time spent on a pretty day in a lovely setting.
