The Joseph T. Jones statue is located at the corner of Highway 90 and 21st Avenue. Jones is the founder of Gulfport and this Georgia marble memorial celebrates his life. Those interested in local history should visit to learn more about the life of this man, who developed Gulfport into a city during first decade of the 1900's

Joseph T Jones was instrumental in the “founding” of Gulfport, my home town. I knew a fair amount of his history, and especially with the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad, plus the creation of the Port. Unlike near-by Biloxi, Gulfport was very late onto the scene. It was basically a sandy stretch of land, at the boundary of the pine forest, and the edge of Mississippi Sound (a part of the Gulf of Mexico). That pine forest was part of the reason that Jones became interested in the area.
We had visited the Joseph T Jones statue in June of 2017. It was the first time for my wife, who grew up in New Orleans. Soon afterwards, I accompanied her on a junket to Buffalo, NY, with the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, and made a connection – Joseph T Jones was from Buffalo! If my Mississippi History classes had covered that, I had completely forgotten.
On a warm February day, we were back to the statue, while touring Jones Park. We had now come “full-circle,” and had filled in a few blanks.
Considering the impact that Jones had on Gulfport, and really, the entire Gulf Coast, this is a must-do, to sort of “start the journey.” On a baseline of the history of Gulfport, this is the ZERO point, and almost everything else, comes after it.

Growing up in Gulfport, I knew Joseph T Jones early on. The memorial to him is an important part of the history of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
We just stopped by, on our recent visit to the Coast, and I gave my wife an explanation of his importance. She knew Jones Park, but did not know why, and for whom it was named. Now she does, thanks to this memorial statue.
Worth a stop, if one cares at all about the history of the Coast

This is currently a large construction site. If the statue is here, it is well hidden behind fences, construction equipment, etc.

Every time I pass or visit this statue I am reminded of my childhood summers/weekends spent at the downtown Gulfport public library! I am so happy that although the library is long gone that they have still kept this monument! Great Gulfport history and heritage that sends me back 20 years!
