The Biloxi Lighthouse was erected in 1848 and was one of the first...

The Biloxi Lighthouse was erected in 1848 and was one of the first cast-iron lighthouses in the South. It is the city's signature landmark and has become a post-Katrina symbol of the city's resolve and resilience. The light was civilian operated from 1848 to 1939, and is notable for its several female lightkeepers, including Maria Younghans, who tended the light for 53 years. In 1939, the U.S. Coast Guard assumed responsibility for the light's operation. After being declared surplus property in 1968, the Biloxi Lighthouse was deeded to the City of Biloxi, which eventually opened it to public tours. The lighthouse has withstood many storms over the years. Katrina's storm surge enveloped a third of the 64-foot tall lighthouse, and the constant pounding from the water and winds toppled many bricks that lined the interior of the cast iron tower. The storm’s winds also broke many of the windows in the light cupola and destroyed the structure's electrical systemIn March 2010, the city re-opened the lighthouse to public tours after a 14-month, $400,000 restoration that was funded by FEMA and MEMA and completed by Biloxi contractor J.O. Collins.

I live in Gulfport and have driven past this lighthouse for years. I did not even know you could go inside. When I found out that I could take a tour to the top, I wanted to go. The tours are only from 9:00 am to 9:45 am, because the lighthouse is made of cast iron and gets really hot... More

Not much to say, it's a lighthouse. We did enjoy the drive along Beach Blvd to get there and there is also a pier and a parking lot in front of the lighthouse. They are all located on Biloxi Beach.

Many people living along the Mississippi gulf coast drive to from work everyday and drive by the historic lighthouse. It has been moved to its current location, in the median of highway 90. There is a historic placard you can read and take pictures of with the lighthouse in the background. It is lighted for Christmas and makes a great... More

Greetings and thank you so much for your interest in the lighthouse and for coming to visit! I wanted to please elaborate on a few of your comments on your review. The lighthouse was built back in 1848 and has never been moved, it is still in it's original location. Originally we were surround on three sides by water. In... More

I love visiting lighthouses and this was a nice roadside one. The only negative was that it was only open to the public from 9-9:45am to go inside. I did get a stamp for my book inside the visitor center and did go back the next morning. It is small lighthouse to walk up but nice.

I live in the area. I've never really gotten the hype of this lighthouse. If it were on a cliff, huge lighthouse looking over the water, I could understand why people love it. It's nice to look at, yes. But it's really not that huge of a deal. There are better things to do, but I suppose if you can... More

While visiting Biloxi MS, I had this on our things to do list, and was glad we made it. You buy a ticket across the street from the new Welcome Center and a guide takes you up to the top to the viewing area. You can look out over the gulf cost and the city, Well the price, but would... More

Lovely old lighthouse. Unfortunately, because of the cast iron built, tour times are very limited. Not to mention that the lighthouse sits smack dab in the middle of a busy road. Very nice, though. Worth a visit to take a photo or two even if you can't get inside.

View was well worth the climb. This lighthouse withstood numerous hurricanes, including Camille and Katrina. Still remained tall among the debris & devastation. A symbol of the residents.
