The Biloxi Lighthouse was erected in 1848 and was one of the first cast-iron lighthouses in the South. It is the city's signature landmark and has become a post-Katrina symbol of the city's resolve and resilience. The light was civilian operated from 1848 to 1939, and is notable for its several female lightkeepers, including Maria Younghans, who tended the light for 53 years. In 1939, the U.S. Coast Guard assumed responsibility for the light's operation. After being declared surplus property in 1968, the Biloxi Lighthouse was deeded to the City of Biloxi, which eventually opened it to public tours. The lighthouse has withstood many storms over the years. Katrina's storm surge enveloped a third of the 64-foot tall lighthouse, and the constant pounding from the water and winds toppled many bricks that lined the interior of the cast iron tower. The storm’s winds also broke many of the windows in the light cupola and destroyed the structure's electrical systemIn March 2010, the city re-opened the lighthouse to public tours after a 14-month, $400,000 restoration that was funded by FEMA and MEMA and completed by Biloxi contractor J.O. Collins.

UNMISSABLE!!

Seeing that it is located right in the middle of the road, you really can't miss it! It has been very well maintained after the Hurricane Katrina.

A drive by attraction right on the beach. No access. Ok for a quick picture. Not what you would expect as a light house. More a light on top of some concrete.

Hello, which lighthouse are you referring to? Light on top of concrete? The cast iron Biloxi Lighthouse has a lot of access as it is located in the center median of highway 90, directly across the street from the Biloxi Visitors Center. Guests are welcome to explore the grounds at any time and the tower is open for tours every... More

You can help but see this, its in the middle of the highway. But what you might want to do is to find out why?I won't tell you here, but the history of this lighthouse is interesting to say the least and can be found out at the visitors center across the street. Its a beautiful little house and makes... More

One of the most beautiful settings on the Gulf Coast, make sure you take the tour. The Adjacent visitors center provides a visual and oral great history of #Biloxi, MS.

When we are down on the coast we always like to go on the beach and see the lighthouse. This weekend, it was open for a short period of time.My husband got a chance to climb all of the stairs and reached the top. He was so excited. He stop by the Visitors Center, which was also a real treat!

Very cool to see the only lighthouse in the middle of a major highway. You don't have to go inside to appreciate it. Lots of parking at the beach so you can safely stop the car and get a good look. Happy to see hurricanes can't keep it away. After each one, they do what they need to do to... More

Excellent view at the top, but be prepared to climb 53 winding steps up! The tour guide is a wonderful local who knows his history. Inside are watermarks from several hurricanes including Katrina.

This lighthouse is pretty small in terms of the many others we have visited but it is really cute and quaint. I am glad they restored it after Katrina. My mom grew up here in the summers and is a favorite memory of hers and she loves to see it each time we drive 90.

We visited yesterday with teenage boys and loved it! Marcus was our tour guide (who stayed late for 2 groups) and he was very knowledgeable about the lighthouse and the area itself. We enjoyed the view, historical facts, the original lense, and everything else.
