- Mrs. RomenceGrand Rapids, Michigan152 contributionsBe Sure To Visit Beauvoir! This place is a beautiful piece of history. We arrived just in time for the guided tour of the house and grounds and we were very glad that we did. The house is original but the two side houses were destroyed during Hurricane Katrina. The tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and very gregarious. The grounds include the main house, two side houses, a library/museum, a huge garden area, a confederate cemetery, and many walking paths throughout the grounds. The tour was of the main house only, you are able to walk through the museum/library and the rest of the grounds yourself. We spent about two hours here walking through the grounds and museum. The tour lasted approximately thirty minutes. To purchase tickets, you can purchase them online or visit the museum gift shop and purchase them there. This place is a wonderful experience. I highly recommend that you visit this home if you are in the area, you will definitely learn something new even if you are already well versed in the Civil War. Thank you Beauvoir!Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 11, 2023
- Evelyn P1 contributionBest your ever!We decided not to get caught up in the Mardi Gras traffic in d own town Biloxiand decided to visit beauvoir instead. One of the BEST decisions we made! The house guide was outstanding! She brought history to life in the most fun way I had ever seen. She made it fun, interesting, and memorable. There were 2 young children on this tour. The guide's interaction with these young children was remarkable. The guide would ask questions and go to these young girls, whisper the answers to them and when these girls repeated what she said, she praised them for getting the right answer. I don't consider myself to be an ease dropped, but I over heard the parents taking to each other saying this was the first time a guide hit their children involved and they loved that. Our guide was Ms. Evelyn. If you get the chance to visit beauvoir, we highly recommend it! Eloise ParkerVisited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 13, 2024
- Patty NRome, New York116 contributionsThe Confederate sideVery interesting tour. A short video gave us some background history. We then had a tour of the house. It had damage from Katrina but it is being fixed. An informative man told us about the house and its inhabitants. I found it interesting that the town taxed the homes based on doors and hinges.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 17, 2024
- xClark-GriswoldxSapporo, Japan318 contributionsWell worth the visitI was debating whether to go to see Beauvoir during my stay next door in Gulfport. I’m so glad I did. Yes, the house is great, the tour is great, the gift shop is interesting, and the price at $13 is a bargain. But for me, the most impressive part of Beauvoir was the museum. I was not expecting such an excellent collection. The museum encompasses several rooms and contains both traditional cased exhibits and touchable learning exhibits “Here! Pick up a musket!” Totally cool. The museum has the coat he wore when captured, Jefferson Davis’ death mask, funeral carriage and tons of period memorabilia. There is also a theater on site with a repeating film about Jefferson Davis. I thought the whole experience was great and am so glad I went to see Beauvoir.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten February 29, 2024

- jjctraveler3,926 contributionsPart of historic SouthMake no mistake, you are entering the confederacy at this historic site. The gift shop has confederate flags, books and Song of the South DVD’s. The museum portion has exhibits and a library with an extensive collection of books on the confederacy. I didn’t feel it glorified it, the confederacy is part of the history of our country, and it is important to understand it. The movie gives a good overview of the mansion and how Jefferson Davis came to reside here, but the house guide will also tell you the same history. The house is much more lavish than I expected, and the hurricane damage is minor now. The small outbuilding where Jefferson Davis wrote his book has been reconstructed after being destroyed by the hurricane. If you are a history buff, this is a great stop. If you hate the entire idea of the confederacy, you should skip it. Kids who have a love of history will enjoy it, but most will just be bored.Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten July 1, 2024

Our guide was Bo and he did a fantastic job giving us historical facts and personal tidbits of information that made the tour very enjoyable. It is astonishing that this home and some of the trees on the property are still standing despite what Mother Nature throws at it. I'm not sure children would enjoy it but I absolutely loved it and I even got to sit under Jefferson Davis's tree and have a think! Highly recommend.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 21, 2024

Beauvoir is the retirement estate for Jeff Davis, and the organization provides a tour of the house and cottage he last worked in, a museum, grounds, and access to the Confederate cemetery used when the house served as an old Confederate folks’ home. The $12.50 per head fee gets you access to all of it. The house tour is the thing. Our docent, Teresa (sp?) was well-prepared and gave us a breathless download of information on all the aspects of the house and furnishings. As it was us and one other couple, we probably could have interacted more if we wanted. Katrina did bad things to the house and it seems work continues to recover. There were many apparently-genuine artifacts left over from Jeff and his families’ time there, which is always good to see in these types of presentations. The museum was ok, but not spectacular. Not too many authentic artifacts, but the building itself was very nice and modern having been built post-Katrina. Various films in places to inform. Cemetery out back is nicely done and maintained; take a hike out there if that’s your thing. The drives and parking lots are still gravel, be prepared if attending during weather.

We had visited Beauvoir last in 2001 (pre-Katrina). This time, we had a high school history teacher in tow, and this was a must do during our visit to Biloxi. We had a very mixed experience.
Positives - for anyone interested in the history of this period (which should be most, but I digress) Beauvoir should be visited. Since Katrina, they have greatly expanded on the visitor center and added some very interesting pieces. Jefferson Davis is not a topic very well studied or taught, and his life was very interesting to say the least.
Negative - the tour. Wow. Do not go unless (a) you have been COVID vaccinated or (b) you just dont care about your (or anyone else's) health. In our group there were approx 30 people, and the tour guid commented that is was the largest group he ever had. So of course wanted a group photo. In the days of social distancing, that did NOT go over well with some of our group. Then in the first room on the tour, herded everyone into a room that barely held all of them and specifically said "hey you dont have to wear your mask". At which point half of the people in the group removed their masks. For the remainder who are concerned about such things, it was very distressing. My group lasted about 5 minutes, then went off and explored the grounds on their own.
Overall, I would recommend going but do not go on the tour if you are concerned about social distancing. If you are, wait for a better time.

The grounds are small but upkept. Walked in to a tour starting so decided to take it. We were told to meet on porch at 10am and at 1015 still waiting. Finally the guide opened the door, never said hello, started a sad tour and sat In a chair saying if any questions just ask that's how he did the tour. 10 people walked aimlessly in 4 rooms its was pathetic. Finally after some went outside bored to death he took us to the porch showed 3 rooms then stood and stared at us. People started going down to the yard and he just ruend and shut the door never said thank you , good bye , not a word.
I hate to see historic places not supported but the staff need drastic improvement or don't waste your time and money.

I love learning about historic sites and this activity did not disappoint. You have a guided tour of the main house which consists of 9 rooms, and a library. A self guided tour of the gardens and then finish up with a stroll through the museum in the second floor of the visitor center. The guide was very informative about the artifacts and the house, and the museum is informative about everything else! Money well spent!

This is a historical treasure. It is a look back at a bygone era of American and Southern history. The collections of weapons and clothing is fascinating as is the the actual home. Some areas need some repairs and it is sad that the State of Mississippi puts almost no money into the upkeep of the facility. At only 12.50 a ticket, it is worth the visit

It's nice to tour old houses, but even better when you have a docent to talk about the house, its structure, the owners/residents, and the historic significance. Beauvoir was the last residence of Jefferson Davis after the Civil War, and the location where he wrote his memoirs. The construction of the house was interesting, using cypress trees and stone as the foundation, since cypress trees live in water, so won't rot, and stones helped keep the termites away. Interesting details include the fact that the interior doors are actually made from cypress trees, but painted to look like oak, since oak has a more desirable appearance. Similarly, the intricate ceiling design is not paper, but a painted on fresco. Much of the furnishes belonged to the original owner, while some pieces are replicas. The neighboring Museum houses Davis's Presidential Library. The building includes information on the impact from Hurricane Katrina.

Not until after researching the trip, making the trip to Biloxi, and paying the entrance fee and making my way to the house, did I learn that most of the house was not avaialable for tour due to reburbishment. Let's be fair and be up-front with the facts. The tour director talked for about 12 minutes, much of which was hard to believe and just not factual. I, and the only other couple that attendded, were very disappointed and left the house disgusted. Check it out and ask the "right" questions before going.

We were charged for two adult tickets and told to visit the museum while we waited for the 12:00 viewing of the house. We were told someone would find us when they were ready at 12:00. We returned to the gift shop to meet the tour guide and we're told we should have been there at 11:50. No accomodations made to allow us to join the group. Was told we could come back the next day. We will be in another state so that was not helpful. They got our admission $.

I last visited in 1989. It was very reverent. Now I hear there is a zoo or something. How much of the reverent side is still included? Are the library and museum restored yet? Is it required that I go on a tour?

There was no zoo in March 2019. Yiu can tour in your own but the guided tour was awesome. Staff is so knowledgeable! Artifacts are priceless! Buildings have been restored. Fantastic library! Great gift shop.

How many rooms are there in the main mansion?
Written October 17, 2016
Open to the public is the foyer, or Hall, with a sitting room/parlor, 2 bedrooms, one on each side, a dining area, & a tiny children's dining area, then off the back porch another bedroom. There are also living areas under the house. There is a couple of separate kitchen & library buildings. Small as it is, It's incredible to see the incredible workmanship & fabulous artwork, furnishings, and draperies.

I remember my parents and I visiting Biloxi, while my brother and sis in law and nephew were still living there, at the time. Always wanted to visit the Beavoir, but never got the chance to. :( Does the plantation have a private family cemetery, attached to the back? Can't remember.
Written January 17, 2016
Yes. There is a cemetery in the back part. They have a map and protected books with names in it so you can find who is where easily.
