We love Shingobee Hills, a popular recreation area within the Chippewa National Forest. Eight miles of looping trail, great for hiking and cross-country skiing. (Non-motorized site) The trails also tie in with the North Country National Scenic Trail that travels 62-miles across the southern end of the Forest. A little buggy in the summer! Fall is better.

This is a unique historic site--one of the first downhill ski areas in Minnesota! The downhill ski area and old rope tow no longer exist, but today, sledders use the hill for winter fun. There is a little chalet near the bottom of the hill--built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1940. Usually open on winter weekends as long as the hill conditions allow for safe sledding. Forest staff get the fire going in the stone fireplace.

The hill is steep for sledding, younger kids should start a little farther down on the side hill--many people also snowshoe and cross-country ski. ( Ski trails are groomed, but check ahead for conditions)

Great fall colors in the area---nice little lakes along the trail, little site across Shingobee River is beautiful. Special events scheduled in the fall (Watch for Howl O Ween Night HIke for families in October) and Shingobee winter weekend events. Little picnic area down the road from sledding hill.

We were only 3 thankfully because it was a busy day.
The hill is mostly smooth. A few bumps here and there. My 1st experience here, so maybe the bumps were for an added thrill.

We drove along Shingobee Island road. It is a very beautiful area. Stopped at an access area just before getting back on the highway and took a couple of pictures. If you time, just take a leisurely ride through here if nothing else.

Beautiful hiking trail, but more prairie than woods so it got hot even when it was only 70 degrees. Lots of ticks--we must have pulled 15 off of us plus at least that many off the dog! There were many options for routes, so take a picture of the map because the trackside maps were too worn to read.

We were here in the summer, so had to imagine sledding, which is at your own risk--it would be thrilling and would only require one or maybe two trips down the hill because the walk back up would be exhausting! What appears to be a warming house is at the bottom near the public restrooms, which were open and clean enough.

Our MN family camped in the area with the lodge available to use to cooking and gathering. It was a nice area, and everyone had a great time. There are outdoor bathrooms but no running water. The lodge has electricity and lots of tables and chairs and wood stoves etc... It's a pretty cool place for groups to gather and you make of it what you want!

The Shingobee Rec Area is absolutely beautiful, and for the best sledding in the entire area, check out Shingobee Hill, between Walker and Park Rapids on Highway 34. It rivals ski hills for vertical drop, so get your nerve up before pushing off the top of the slope! For chickens, there is a longer, more gradual sledding slope off to the side. A rustic lodge below the hill can be rented for $50 if you'd like to host a bonfire and hot chocolate party after sledding! In the summer and fall, it's a beautiful hiking destination.

Stopped by here for an evening walk and was super delighted by this little gem. This is a multi-use area, which is set up for skiing and hiking. There's a sliding hill that seems like it would be super awesome in the winter, and about 5 miles of winding, wide trails that cut through the beautiful aspens.

When I went through, there was not another soul to be found, so I had the whole park to myself. Mind the hills! There are a LOT!

I have been sledding at Shingnobee Hill many times and it is very fun but also rather dangerous. I have seen many people get hurt while sledding (mainly broken noses). I would not recommend Shingnobee Hill to anyone going with children younger than 10. Personally I enjoyed sledding at Shingnobee but it isn’t the best for little kids

There is a great sledding hill and provides a lot of fun and winter exercise. Be sure to be careful. I have personally gotten pretty injured on this hill.

We love Shingnobee for their x-country trails. They're nicely groomed and absolutely beautiful. The trails are at all levels of difficulty and are clearly marked. It seems to be a hidden gem because all the times I've ever been there, there were hardly any people. I am from the Chicago area and go here when we visit my in-laws who live near Walker, MN.
