Overview

Shipwrecks from a mighty 1905 November gale prompted this rugged landmark's construction. Completed by the U.S. Lighthouse Service in 1910, Split Rock Light Station soon became one of Minnesota's best known landmarks. Restored to its 1920s appearance, the light station offers a glimpse of lighthouse life in this remote and spectacular setting. Split Rock Lighthouse is a National Historic Landmark.

This is one of the coolest places I have been. I love knowing that all of the materials were brought over by boat and hoisted up via crane on the side of the cliff. The lighthouse lens is fascinating. Great place to see how life...More

We have visited before, but this year we got to go in the lighthouse, Keepers Quarters and Fog Horn House. The actors were all knowledge and extremely kind. What a beautiful area! We love the lighthouse and its grounds.

On the Minn North Shore. I think the average stop is about 2 hours. Guided or self guided tours ate available. Probably not the best stop while raining.

The hike to the lighthouse was beautiful. Many fun things to see along the way and being able to stop and enjoy fun in the lake.

This was cool place. Literally. The wind does blow through this place. Excellent opportunity for some great pictures. Take the hike down to the beach for picture of the lighthouse

Take the guided tour to learn about the daily lives of light keepers. Climb to the top of the tower to see the large glass beacon at top, and walk through the light keeper's house. Fantastic photo opportunities.

History + beautiful views and friendly park staff. Price is average for this type of attraction. Check out the lighthouse, take the tour, and then travel in to the park to get a view from the shoreline.

We were very surprised to get to the Split Rock Lighthouse and find out that, despite being a state park, we had to pay extra to see the grounds and the lighthouse. We did not want to climb the lighthouse, so it was not worth...More

The lighthouse was lovely. I was a little disappointed in the self-guided tour. In retrospect, I'd rather take the time and do the guided tour. The lighthouse and associated dwellings and buildings were interesting, but I just felt something was lacking. Maybe it was the...More

No dogs are allowed on the Historic Site grounds, which include all the buildings and specific trails down to Lake Superior. The adjacent Split Rock Lighthouse State Park does allow dogs on their hiking trails.

If the flight of outdoor stairs are too much to get up to the lighthouse base, he can walk down the path a short way to see a nice but partial view without going down all those stairs. You can drive down to the beach and... More
